  • Ripe, blackcurarnt fruit, vanilla, touch of herb, quite full bodied, some spice and cedar notes to go along with the ripe black fruits, plush, very good length finish. Rich and full. Young still.

  • A bit of a ringer for a good pomerol tonight, including a hint of cigar box and a faint leafyness. A nice touch of aniseed coming through on the palate as well.

  • Tasted in a vertical of all the released vintages of Redoma from 1991 until 2009. A blend of mostly Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Tinto Cão along with a few dozen other varieties. Fermented and macerated over 15 days in stone lagares and stainless steel vats, aged for 18 months in 228-liter French oak pièces. 13,5% alcohol, 5,11 g/l acidity, pH 3,69, free SO2 at the time of bottling 28 mg/l. Total production 25,000 bottles.

Faintly translucent cherry red color with a thin, moderately pale raspberry-red rim. Quite sweet and polished nose with ripe aromas of succulent dark plums, some integrated sweet oak spice, a little bit of liquorice, a hint of stewed plums and a touch of mocha. If the glass sis left undisturbed for a moment, the still nose starts to exhibit a lactic blueberry yoghurt aroma of MLF. The wine is full-bodied, mellow and round on the palate with quite sweet, modern and polished flavors of concentrated black cherry-driven fruit, some boysenberry jam, a little bit of oaky milk chocolate character, a hint of brambly blackberries and a touch of leafy herbal character along with some herbal bitterness. The acidity feels rather modest, but the wine is kept from coming across as flabby by the firm and still noticeably grippy tannins. The finish is ripe, sweet and mouthfilling with quite prominent tannic grip and lengthy, intense flavors of chocolatey oak, boysenberry jam, some vanilla, a little bit of sweet liquorice and a minty hint of herbal character.

A rich, very ripe and rather modern take on Redoma, feeling like a step back to the more modernist style from the slightly more understated style of vintage 2004. Lots of everything going on here, but my biggest beef with the wine is its modest acidity - overall the wine feels a bit too sweet and soft - despite the rather tough tannins - and overall the wine is lacking the freshness that is often the vital part of good Douro reds, including Redoma. While the wine feels still relatively young, it is a bit more developed than the surrounding vintages and I suspect this is not going to be as long-lived vintage as some. Probably will benefit from additional cellaring if the oak integrates better with the fruit and the grippy tannins resolve some more.

  • I'm slightly torn about this.

Good depth of soft dark fruit, and despite there being residual tannins, they mesh so well with the fruit, the silky texture remains. Acidity supportive, and a faint touch of bitterness allied to the tannins, give sufficient structure to stop the wine becoming flabby.

All good, and it's a very friendly wine, but maybe it feels just a little too easy / polished. The sort of wine where you want a really safe bet, but aren't looking to be challenged or overly excited.

  • A blend of "Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinto Cão and others...oak barrels during 18 months..." (Niepoort website). We often are fascinated with blends of 5+ varietals...interesting! Murky, dark red with a transparent rim. Aromas of wet forest, slightly musty, pepper and ripe, red berries. Palate of ripe red fruit, slightly firm tannins and a long finish. We bought a few bottles, tried one each year and have decided, perhaps, we either (a) will not sip so young or (b) will not sip at all. Hard call as quite a few people we know think it is our error for sipping too young. It is a "good" wine, just nothing special.
