  • Very deep black-garnet with a thin bricking edge.
Well-defined bouquet of toasted herbs, underbrush, forest fruits and fresh black cherry elements. As the wine opens further, there is molasses and cola tonic.
Full-bodied, with a noted sweet entry, there is tilled soil, peat and roasted chestnuts. At first, the nut element seemed a little corked but blew off. A dry wine, the tannins are chewy and tarry, almost a little rustic but typically upheld by that crisp Portuguese acidity that seemed quite energetic—flavours of liquorice, savoury old oak barrels, stewed black plums and star anise in the mid-palate. Broad-shouldered, a richness came through and some fresh herbs and medicinal elements. The wine retained a lovely freshness throughout with a cool (almost menthol) note and a long finish.

  • My last bottle. Pop and Pour. Surprisingly dark color. Some minimal bricking. Looks young for a 2004. Black cherry, oak, molasses, and cola nose. The texture is amazingly suave. Based on the nose it seems heavy. Extremely smooth entry, some very fine tannins appear. It is a big wine, certainly for a Redoma. Black cherry and black berry palate. The finish is a bit clipped, but the tannins poke out at this point. Maybe too young? I guess I might see something more tomorrow. Delicious. Easy to drink. Worked well with my steak dinner. 92 points

  • Tasted in a vertical of all the released vintages of Redoma from 1991 until 2009. A blend of mostly Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Francisca and Sousão along with a few dozen other varieties. Fermented and macerated over 15 days in stone lagares and stainless steel vats, aged for 18 months in 228-liter French oak pièces. 14% alcohol, 5,65 g/l acidity, pH 3,59, free SO2 at the time of bottling 31 mg/l. Total production 18,300 bottles.

Moderately translucent and remarkably youthful, almost purple-hued black cherry color. Very ripe and fruit-forward nose with youthful and sweet aromas of juicy black cherries, some liquorice, a little bit of savory woody spice, a hint of soft strawberries and a touch of stewed plums. Lots of power here and the emphasis is nicely on the fruit, not on oak. The wine is rich, full-bodied and broad-shouldered on the palate with bold and juicy flavors of ripe blackberries, liquorice and anise, some succulent plummy fruit, a little bit of minty herbal character, hints of medicinal herbal bitterness and a touch of savory, slightly coarse oak spice. The wine is quite substantial, but also nicely framed by the moderately high acidity and ample yet ripe tannins that contribute as much to the textural feel as to the firm grippy sensation of the wine. The finish is ripe, rich and quite grippy with nicely chewy, textural tannins, a little bit of alcohol warmth and persistent flavors of juicy blackberries and boysenberries, savory and slightly peppery oak spice, a little bit of liquorice, light anise-driven cooling herbal character, a hint of plummy fruit and a touch of dark chocolate.

A very impressive, big and obviously quite ripe vintage of Redoma that has managed to integrate most of the oak character underneath the bold fruit, yet retain the youthful edge of that fruit remarkably well. Although quite voluminous, the wine never once feels overdone or excessive, all thanks to its balanced structure and overall harmonious character. Stylistically this wine is closer to the more modern Redomas of the early 2000's than the more savory and restrained style of the 1990's, but this also feels a small step away from the most extreme modernist end. Obviously in a beautiful drinking spot right now, but if you prefer wines with some age to them, let this wine wait - it can take easily a lot more age. A lovely vintage from the early 2000's, highly recommended.

  • Very fruity nose with concentrated blackcurrants and some dark cherries, with almost a winegum impression, and some violets. More than medium bodied, again with a very fruity profile, good acidity, quite mild and velvety tannins. Young in its aromas, but fully mature in terms of tannin structure. Could be cellared further, but difficult to tell what would happen to it.
