Vinetasters: Clos Vougeot (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Lots of damp earth and mushroom on the nose of this one, with some of the same showing up on the palate as well. Not the cleanest wine, there is something fairly funky about this on the palate. Shows really lean, with some harsher tannins. Not too much fruit here anymore. Seems a bit dessicated, and if anything, on a bit of a down slope? 1988? My 8th, group's 11th.

Casual Burgundy Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Open 30-45 minutes before serving. Lots of earth and spice with mature red fruit. More mature than I would expect from a 1988, with good concentration and length, just not quite at Grand Cru level for us tonight.

Complex aromatics of wet earth, smoke, beef stock, black fruits and decaying leaves. It is full, rich and intense. Black fruit flavours are tinged with savoury nuance. It builds through the palate and finishes with the cleansing acidity of the vintage. Drinking brilliantly well.

My favorite wine of the night. Brickish red in color. No sign of oxidation either by smell or taste. Aromas of sweet red fruits, raw meat and white spices. Very elegant, complex and sweet fruit in the mouth with great structure and balance, soft tannins and great length. Consumed with a small production raw milk Morbier and a truffled pecorino from Tuscany, this was the match of the night.
