Last bottle of a parcel of 1980 Mongeard Mungeret wines purchased from Sherry Lehman in the mid 1980s.
After some initial funk a mature nose of sweet red fruit, laced with floral, spice and earth notes evolved over the next hour. As with the nose, this took 15 minutes or so to come together to reveal layers of mature, spiced red fruits draped on an elegant, well proportioned frame. The last sip was the best sip as we went on to the next flight.
I have really come to enjoy this Producer over the last 30+ years, particularly their Grands Echezeaux, and think they are undervalued in today’s marketplace.
