  • 5x 1964 red, 2x Sherry: Five 1964 reds. All tasted blind. Rioja for the win! The 1964 Rioja vintage is just magical. Clear winner and WOTN, the Rioja Alta Ardanza Reserva Especial (98 pts). Highly complex, ever changing, clean and precise, very Burgundian. Next Angelus (95 pts), perfectly mature, elegant, pure Bordeaux missing just a bit more substance for an even higher rating. Third, CVNE Vina Real Reserva Especial (94 pts) a bit past its peak with hyper intense and intriguing coffee/malty and nutty notes. Finally, two solid Burgundies. Louis Remy Chambertin (92 pts) showed very young, with almost new world-like, ripe fruit and sweetness which was a bit perplexing. The Leroy d’Auvenay (90 pts) had a good structure but was not harmonious and clean enough.

    TN: Medium+ expressive nose with leather, truffles, dark fruit, some hints of brett. Intriguing and well delineated. On the palate a bit less well delineated at first but with increasing purity with more air. A good sweetness, beautiful minerality, full tertiary aromas adding complexity and creating a wonderful aromatic balance. Very fine tannins, good tension and freshness and beautiful creaminess. Good length. Easily iedentifiable as Bordeaux and one you could drink the whole bottle alone. Much better than a magnum of this I’ve had last year which didn’t have the purity but especially the tertiary complexity.

  • 15 Mature Bordeauxs Magnums (with Heitz MV in the mix): From magnum. This needed a bit of time to come out of its shell. It became sweeter and more expressive by the minute but never really showed overly complex. Nicely light and airy but with a bit of tension missing.

    TN: At first there was some cellar stink on the nose but it blew off with time and underneath were blue and especially sweet red berries. Quite expressive but simple. Same on the palate with an airy texture, molten tannins and a medium acidity, overall missing a bit of tension. The same sweet fruit aromas but not much more.

    Decanting: Not decanted, this would have needed a good decant.

  • Magnum rarities tasting; 7/2/2021-7/3/2021 (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Magnum rarities tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. The headline line-up of the main event featured 18 aged red wines from magnum which was preceded by warm-up tasting of a dozen aged reds. The highlights across both days were Chris Ringland 1998 (99), Montrose 1990 and Yquem 1948 (both 98). Also strong were Palmer 1989 (97), Cheval Blanc 1985 (97) and Léoville Poyferré 1990 (96). None of the wines were decanted prior to serving.

    Tasting note:
    From magnum. A lot of cellar must here as well as some wet cardboard. Overall still came across intact, however. Some sweet, red berry elements. Palate also just ok, but not much to be liked. Alcoholic, unbalanced, austere with a bitter aftertaste.

  • Annual Richter Extravaganza (All bottles out of magnums): Lots of people at the table found this to be terrible. I was not so harsh with this wine. Yes it lacked structure but to me it had some interesting sweet notes of caramel, fruit gum, four-fruit-jam, and in the palate - while lacking acid and tannic structure - it was kind of creamy and dense. After this, out of pure curiosity, I bought two bottles (one chateau and one belgium negociant) to check in on this wine again in the next year or so.

  • Belgium bottling and label from emile clerckx. Unfortunately this bottle was leaking badly when I received it. Probably this has been bottle decanting for 4 days or more by the time I got into it. Was prepared to drink vinegar or something really rancid. But lo and behold! The glorious rich dense mouthfeel of fruits remained! Believe this was a hot summer year and the stuffing was exceptionally good especially on the right bank where they picked early. Unfortunately by the time it got to my lips this was kinda tired with all but flat acidity. No doubt I could still taste that luscious ness. How I wish I could taste an u spoilt bottle.
