  • Some more old(-ish) Bordeaux from Alan's collection: The fill was low-medium on the neck. The cork came out reasonably cleanly and was soaked through only the first 5mm or so.

The colour was still a reasonably deep red with no bricking. Unfortunately though the nose carried a strong and not (for me) particularly pleasant medicinal note along with dark red fruit. These followed to the palate where the weird, oxidised/medicinal flavour dominated and I put it aside.

(The host of the evening, who had cellared the wine for the last 15 years, did not however perceive the flavour to be unpleasant or "off" and professed to quite like the wine.)

  • Very dark red color with 4mm meniscus of bricking. PNP and gave this 30 minutes in glass before drinking. Followed 2 glasses over an additional 2 hours. There is a very pretty nose, violets, honed leather, a perfume of potpourri, earthy, minerals, subtle red fruits and darker berries with some wood spice. The palate is not at the level of the nose, but still makes for an interesting excursion. The palate is quite earthy with distinct minerality that has a metallic edge, licorice, medium body and a little thin in the mid palate, there is still ample tannin and some heavy sediment. Some berry and blueberry fruit emerges after an hour or so, never quite overcoming the acidity at this point. This wine still has a little something left, particularly on the nose. But the palate is a bit rustic and won't please those looking for more fruit. Classic old school mature Bordeaux, and it would have been interesting to see this about 5 years ago for comparison. I'm not sure it would have been that much different. 87+ to 88pts.

  • Decanted at a farm to table restaurant, tasted over a 2h window. The wine is pale red with a faint berry aroma. On the palate a very mild subdued experience, fully integrated tannins and faint red fruit, berry mostly, but lacking in complexity and power. Quite pleasant accompaniment to wild mushroom soup and roast venison. However, this vintage is past its prime.

  • Less nose than the 97. Not a fruity wine. More spice, greater complexity than the 97 as well. Black pepper, hint of mustiness on the nose. The tannins have resolved, very smooth. Nice acid, faint fruit.

Tried this wine along with the 97 at the party. Folks preferred the 97 over the 93. In my opinion both vintages are equally good, just different. Three and half stars out of five.
