Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 92.2 points

  • Tasted blind, the ‘48 Beychevelle shows so much volatile acidity that it’s hard to narrow things down to much more than Northern Médoc. There’s enough raspberry, loam, and smoky, meaty sauvage to make this a complete wine, but it’s hard to cope with the VA.

  • Aged Bordeaux Gems (with Unico/Heitz MV in the mix): Magnum. Mid neck level. We had two Beychevelle magnums, one from 1961 (rated 96) and one from 1948 (rated 95). Both bottles were in absolute pristine condition with very good fill levels and impeccable, almost new labels which make me believe that these bottles were highly likely late releases from the Chateau. Both wines were on fire showing fairly complex aromatics (the 61 more so than the 48), delivered with good precision and all embedded in a soft and creamy structure. This 1948 was sexy, sweet, weightless and at its peak.

TN: Super sexy nose with lots of fresh strawberries, minerality and herbal notes and cola. Same aromas on the palate which is absolutely weightless without missing density or intensity. Of course it is not the most complex wine but what is there is delivered with very good precision. Creamy and sexy, super fine tannins, good freshness and medium length. Highly enjoyable.

Decanting: Double decanted only. Good from the go.

  • Magnum rarities tasting (Near Basel): This was part of a rarity old wine tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. All (almost) bottles were from magnum and double-decanted. The line-ups was dominated by aged Bordeaux, but also included two vintages of Unico and one from Martha's Vineyard. The undisputed winners were Pichon Lalande 82 and Lynch Bages 82. The most memorable, however, was the Pontet Canet 29 and St Croix Dumonts 21. The Unico (60, 65) were underwhelming as was – once again for me – Mouton 82.

    Tasting note:
Fruit forward, initially light but turning more dark over time in the glass. A strong frame of fresh and dried herbs, leather and some spices. Fresh and fruity on the palate with perfect balance and to put this simply: a lot of fun.

  • Richter magnum tasting, all wines out of Magnum: Pretty nose with some tobacco, leather, herbs, cedar and a touch of old saddle. Palate is light, elegant but long with a good sweetness

  • A beautiful example of what classic Bordeaux is all about. The tobacco, leaf, cigar box, cedar and bright red fruits kick the wine off to a good start. Juicy, energetic, cedary and with more cigar wrapper on the palate, this is fully mature and quite a historic treat to taste. And at least this bottle had a beautiful, blue tint to the green glass.
