France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Small glass, brief note. Bit of reduction. Floral, peach, mint and poached pear. Great concentration and length for its level. Razor sharp finish. This wine keeps getting better.
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
Small glass, brief note. Honeycomb and apple aromas, then slightly riper flavors that seemed to include mango. Good concentration, but somewhat brooding despite the tropical character. Good+ length. Not nearly as interesting as the 1989 vintage with lunch earlier today, and nowhere near the potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature orchard fruit with great concentration, moderate structure. Might have been great 5 or 10 years ago, but still very good tonight. Drink up.
Tasted twice in the night. Cross-section of appple aromas and flavors with some tropical fruit, berries and toasted baguette. Has the richness to be very tasty now, with the energy to evolve over the next two decades.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. From magnum. Nicely fresh with good balance and orchard fruit character throughout. Slightly simple, not showing a Grand Cru density to me, surprising for a Montrachet.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Red and black cherry still coming through, albeit behind plenty of earth and mushroom. Certainly clean and very well balanced with good+ length and lots of unfolding flavor.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. An odd bottle. Black, dense fruit but an odd chemical smell I couldn't place. Others agreed, but also couldn't quite figure this out. Better flavors, but not at the level at previous bottles, although I haven't had this wine in almost 4 years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Red cherry and berry with spice hints. Good+ length and weight with very good balance. Certainly very charming, but I Mike expect more from Rousseau in this great vintage, but alas, that is often the story with this cuvée.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature red fruit, not perfectly pristine but with good concentration. I enjoyed this more than others tonight. I also liked it more than the last time tasted in 2010.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Red and black cherry, nicely ripe and nicely mature. Less complex than I recall from several other bottles tasted this decade, so slightly disappointing. Others enjoyed this more.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very pretty aromas of mature red berry and cherry with baking spice and good richness. An oddly dark color for its ago, so I was not confident this was 100% Pinot Noir, even if still certainly very enjoyable.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Bottle with near perfect fill that probably has never left Burgundy. Mature black cherry aromas and flavors equally match the earth and cooked mushroom character. Woodsy and braised meat spice. Very good finesse, balance and length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very dense black firm with even more firm structure. I can sense potential if this reaches some harmony, but could not sense where or when that might be possible.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Floral with spice and an broad array of fresh red fruit aromas. .Similar flavors. Expanding finish with great textures. Seems better each time I get to taste this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. I kept this in glass for an hour+ to see how it would evolve. Started off as dominated by sweet spice and the whole cluster character, with very backward red fruit and tannins. Slowly great/ powerful flavors and balance emerged, and then voilà, my glass was empty. This was approachable when younger, but now needs more time in the cellar.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Patience has been rewarded with this wine, which is so much better better now vs when last tasted a decade back. Starts with that Leroy perfume, who cares if that makes you certain this is from Vosne! Powerful and nuanced cross-section of great red fruit, subtlely and slowly evolving. Probably still has upside from here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Black and red cherry with some liqueur, roasted game and licorice hints. Emphasis here is on great balance and elegance, with good concentration, which is the hallmark of the Griotte terroir I truly enjoy. Upside from here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich red cherry with savory spice and very good+ concentration. Great length. What makes this wine so amazing is its perfect balance, with every component in perfect harmony with every other component. Easily my WOTN in a night with many great wines.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Tasted twice in the evening, small tastes both times. At first this came across as slightly bretty and uninteresting. Cleaner and nicely mature an hour+ later, still not to the level to expect from Musigny, but quite nice.
Small glass, brief note. Mature red and black cherry with shocking freshnesss and great concentration and length for its level. A gracefully aged beauty.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very backward when first poured, so I left this in glass for almost 30 minutes. Air was helpful here, bringing out bright red cherries and berries with savory spice, still backward but with very good weight and length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
Great color, 1.5cm ullage. Maturing black cherry with sweet spice and exceptional concentration and balance. Unmistakably Vosne and so clearly Grand Cru. A favorite tonight for several of the producers present. Best I can ever recall for this wine.
Tasted several times over 30 minutes. Lots of dense black plum and cherry with savory spice and tobacco. Certainly as much tannin as fruit, making this a very large scaled wine, even if not particularly elegant.
Late night, small glass, brief note. Lots of orchard frit with lemon confit and a real concentration and sense of power, rather than finesse. Very impressive.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Ripe and rich, seemingly unctuous with excellent concentration. Enough structure to provide great balance and length. Very impressive now, still nicely fresh.
2011 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Small glass, brief note. Bit of reduction. Floral, peach, mint and poached pear. Great concentration and length for its level. Razor sharp finish. This wine keeps getting better.
