France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Tasting, brief note. Rich and forward cross-section if apple aromas and flavors. Nose is more expressive today vs palate, but good length. Great value wine.
Tasting, brief note. Starts with fun, bright Apple and pear but then shows surprisingly good length and weight for its level. Also finished with a chalky mineral character I liked a lot. Very good every drinking value.
Tasting, brief note. Good floral start. Lots of apple, some peach and hazelnut. Good density. I enjoyed this much more today vs when tasted in Meursault this summer. Still, best to enjoy young.
Tasting, brief note. Big fruit, borderline jammy start, but more balance and textures middle forward. Very good length, ending with good balance. Very good value wine.
Tasting, brief note. Ripe black and red cherry, slightly backward and brooding (vs when tasted a year ago) but with very good length and weight. Better to cellar a few more years, 88-89+ point potential.
Tasting, brief note. Plenty of black fruit that starts out slightly sweet, ends rich and savory. Bright middle through finish, very well textured with impressive concentration for its level.
Tasting, brief note. Red fruit start-to-finish. Good nose, less forthcoming on palate. Reserved and backward vs previous times tasted, I'd suggest leaving this until 2024 or later, but lots of stuff here, with 90+ potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Much like the Volnay Caillerets, this seems shut down, while clearly showing so much weight, concentration and potential. Long, expanding finish gives me confidence in where this will emerge (92+? points), but this will need another decade in the cellar.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and fleshy red fruit with impressive density for its level. Lots of fruit throughout, very good spice on finish. Good now with upside. I liked this more now vs when tasted from barrel summer 2016.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with dried thyme and roasted meat. Starts out lithe and elegant for Gevrey Grand Cru, then finishes with a sneaky, long and powerful finish, while still nicely elegant.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Starts of bright with all read fruit with a lighter, fun character, then more power and weight emerge middle-through-finish. Roasted meat, tannins, more spice come through at end. Good now with upside, 89-90 point potential, better to cellar another year or three.
Tasting, brief note. Lots of cherry aromas and flavors with roasted meat and dried herbs. Firm and powerful finish. Very good length. 90+ point potential.
Tasting, brief note. Broad array of red fruits with impressive depth for its Bourgogne level. Old school style with lots of charm. Mostly from 4 Bourgogne parcels near Volnay with Beaune 1er Coucherias included. Very good value wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple with a little sulfur that blew off quickly. Lush start, mineral and restrained middle and finish. Good now with upside, 88-89 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting, brief note. Black berries with espresso, braised meat and savory spice. Bit if whole cluster in background. Very impressive weight for its level. Old vine concentration.
A new project from multiple parcels that Arnaud farms and vinifies, all on the west side of RN74.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. A bit of a head scratcher to me, especially given critics' reviews. Today this came across as light, weightless and elegant with forward fruit fruit, background black cherry and soft tannins. I'd never have thought this Corton if tasted blind. Enjoyable, but not Grand Cru density and quality to me today. Odd bottle?
Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple and lemon with good weight for its level, but a faint sweetness that made it seem less classically Chablis to me. Still a good taste of simple Chardonnay and good value for near-term enjoyment.
Tasting, brief note. Bright start with lots of lemon and lemon peel with classic Chablis acidity and minerality. Good+ weight and length for its level. An excellent value wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
Tasting, brief note. All red fruit, somewhat bright but tight middle through finish. Old school style, in all positive terms with good length and charming elegance, especially at this level. Best to cellar a few years.
Tasting, brief note. A clear step up over Chorey les Beaune just tasted. More varied red and black cherry with slightly more muscle. Slightly closed in the middle, but probably 88+ point potential, 2020 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasted twice, two hours apart, brief note. At first, very reduced, impossible to assess. Second tasting was nicely charming with plenty of red fruit, braised meat and moderate weight. Interesting finesse on finish.
Tasting, brief note. More red vs black berries on nose and palate. Bright aromas with spice, with similar flavors that are slightly meatier. Good weight, especially on finish. Better in a few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting, brief note. All black cherry and berry with some earth. Good weight for its level, slightly simpler than the other P-M cuvees tasted today. Good now, certainly with the ability to age.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red cherry and berry with impressive ripeness, balance and elegant textures. A sensational Villages wine, but that's no surprise since it is comprised of 1er Cru fruit. Very elegant. I believe this is the same as the wine labelled "Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes," and despite its name also includes some Richemone.
Tasting, brief note. 50% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this comes across as very Pinot-centric to me. I like the richness of the vintage here, but am less excited by softer textures. Good length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
Tasting, brief note. Ripe lemon and apple with both sweet and savory spice. Very impressive for its level with good density. So good right now, best through 2024.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Excellent density and richness. Slightly brooding in the middle with a complex, long finish. Great 1er Cru. From the "en la Richarde" lieu-dit.
Tasting, brief note. Floral start with soft red fruit and fun spice. Similar flavors with a slightly firm finish that detracts from the overall enjoyment today.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Starts out with ripe black fruit, liqueur, roasted meat and slightly sweet spice. Similar flavors, slightly more savory and refined. Very successful wine with lots of upside, 2026 forward.
Tasting, brief note. So much apple here with some lemon curd and toasted walnuts. So bright and vibrant with a long, expanding finish. So good now with plenty of upside.
Tasting, brief note. A new age for Grande Dame - 92% Pinot Noir. Berries really come through with some toasted almond and toasted rye bread. Rounded textures, very good length.
Tasting, brief note. So much here. Lemon, ripe apple, candied lemon peel, gingerbread and an intense minerality. Great length. Easily 95+ point potential, I will need to try this again soon in a setting with more than a small pour and a few minutes.
Tasting, brief note. Lots of berry everywhere, some ripe apple in background with charming floral and spice support. Good+ length, very nicely balanced. Best I can ever recall for this wine.
Tasting, brief note. Broad cross-section of ripe apple aromas and flavors with some toasted almond and toasted brioche. Very good depth, good+ length and textures. One of my favorite editions in recent years.
Tasting, brief note. Current release, with 2008 base. One of the best releases of this wine I can recall. Lean apple and pear with some lemon, overall good complexity, very good length and good power.
Tasting, brief note. Fleshy black fruit, also coming across in a modern, opulent style, but the stuffing to maintain balance. Very fun now, with upside from here.
Tasting, brief note. 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay. So much apple with lemon curd and toasted rye. Very rich and concentrated. Not my preferred style of Champagne, but so well made in this style.
Tasting, brief note. Bright start, then riper, fatter middle. Good length, perhaps a little more minerality would be more classic, but very tasty now. 87-88 points.
Tasting, brief note. Subtle floral aromatic start with spice aplenty and lots of ripe orchard fruit. Very good density, perhaps a little backward right now, but impressive 1er Cru potential, 91-92 points, 2022 forward.
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and fleshy apple and baked apple coming across as powerful through the middle, but slightly simple on finish. Better in another year, but probably best to enjoy through 2024.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting, brief note. Impressive Villages level with intense black fruit and game, perhaps a bit of baby fat that will surely dissipate in another year. Good+ concentration .
Tasting, brief note. Black and red berry with background savory spice, grilled sausage and floral hints. A bit of whole cluster will need a year or two to integrate better. Very good+ length and hints of nuance already with good+ weight. A lot going on here, 91-92+ point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. All red fruit here with an overall elegant character. Less density vs my experience so far with 2016 Grand Cru, but lots of finesse. Probably best to enjoy medium-term, 2022 -2041.
Tasting, brief note. Current release, April 2018 disgorgement. Not sure what base. Rich and fat apple to start with fresh brioche, then a slightly backward finish. Better in another year. Good+ length and textures.
Tasting, brief note. Current release, 2013 base. 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot. Good weight and fruit, also prob better in another year. Very good textures, especially on finish.
Impressive concentration with lots of ripe fruit and toasted rye bread. I like everything here, but hope the dominating ripeness softens with a few more years in the cellar.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Rich and fleshy orchard fruit with some peach hints. Opulent starts transitions to brighter, more restrained middle and finish. Very good length. Better to cellar another year or three.
Tasting, brief note. As expected, an eccentric wine. Fresh and dried apricot alongside fresh apple and apple cobbler with toasted baguette and candied orange peel and a hint of black truffle. Very good concentration, good length. Certainly still upside from here.
Tasting, brief note. Exactly what you expect from Pommard - brooding and bold fruit with complex textures that intrigue, but tannins that obfuscate in its youth. Cellar.
Tasting, brief note. Apple and lemon with very good brightness and length for its level. Classic Chablis mineral textures on finish. Slightly simple flavors, but overall very good value at its level.
Tasting, brief note. Very good nose with floral start and ripe orchard fruit with spice. Similar flavors, perhaps slightly less complex. Still excellent for its level, 88-89 points, although I know I've experienced bottle variation with this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Starts out with plenty of ripe orchard fruit and spice hints , gets leaner, more textured and more nuanced towards middle and finish. An excellent Villages.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Slightly more restrained than many Villages level 2015s with good spice, good weight. Cellar for a year+ for some better integration.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Engaging floral start with rich fruit on nose and palate with very good concentration, good structure and length. A very good Villages, best now-2026
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. The concentrated side of the 2016 vintage comes through to start with a fun mint touch, and yet wonderful balance emerges middle forward. Good weight and length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Lots of lemon and lemon peel with plenty of concentration, but also seemingly a bit backward. Great textures make me think there is impressive 90-91+ point potential, but that level of pleasure isn't there yet today.
Tasting, brief note. Slight aromatic reduction to start that modestly masks plenty of orchard fruit, gingerbread and caraway seed. A wine I'd want to cellar a few more years or decant, there is very good concentration coming through on palate with a mineral-flecked and long finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Tasting, brief note. Bright red cherry comes across as fun and easy from start to finish. Good now, not particularly complex but good depth for its level.
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red fruit comes across as elegant and slightly lean to start, then more concentrated middle forward with sneaky good+ length. Very good value, better to cellar a few years.
Tasting, brief note. Big and burly black fruit with rugged tannins. Lots of everything here, but not yet fully harmonized. Certainly needs time in the cellar. Today I'd think this merits 87-88 points, but my experience with prior vintages think it will be even better as everything integrates.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red fruit aromas and flavors with good+ concentration and length, but still firm and seemingly backward with a rugged finish that still needs time. Good potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. Red cherry and berry with good weight, even better length and textural charm. Getting close to its peak drinking window, this has lots of good Old School character.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. Charming combination of spice, red cherry and floral notes. Slightly modern with oaky spice, but very good balance and good length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Tasting, brief note. Broad array of red fruit with good intense concentration for its level. Elegant tannins, dancing minerality and bright acidity combine for very good textures. Very good balance with a wonderful old school character I really enjoyed here. Close to its peak drinking window.
Tasting, brief note. Wonderful cross-section of bright red fruit on nose and palate with both sweet and savory Vosne spice. Starts a bit simple, finishes long and strong with sneaky structure emerging. Better than I remember from when tasted a year ago.
Tasting, brief note. Comes across as a cross of Vosne and NSG with NSG-like meaty black fruit and Vosne Asian five spice. Very good length and weight for its level. Lingers nicely. 89-90 points, better in a few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasting, brief note. Spice and ripe black fruit aromas. Similar flavors, but very firm, almost coarse. Needs lots of time for Villages, 87-88 point potential, 2023 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting, brief note. Black berries, roasted beef and espresso. Old vine concentration. Ripe and fun, while also dense and powerfully long for its level. Impressive Village.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Tasting, brief note. Black plum and cherry with good weight, good spice. So fun already, then slightly firm in middle. Another excellent 2015 Village that is good now with upside.
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red fruit comes across as ripe and spicy, with lots of whole cluster character. Fun and powerful, even if easy and modestly complex.
Tasting, brief note. Enticing combination of black and red cherry with dried herbs and savory spice. Surprisingly open start, then sneaky structure middle forward. Very good length with a slightly backward finish. 91-92 point potential, 2025-.
Tasting, brief note. This continues to perform amazingly for such a young Pommard. Rich and dense with so much black fruit concentration, yet also incredibly elegant and refined. So much here. Great 93-94 point potential. Consistent with prior tastings.
Tasting, brief note. Seriously great potential here. Black and blue berries with plum, anise, thyme and bay leaf with slowly braised meat. Long and evolving already. 93-95 point potential.
2014 Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne-Aligoté 85 Points
