2021 Bordeaux Tasting Trip; 7/12/2021-7/16/2021 (Bordeaux): A tasting in Bordeaux of 71 wines, some of the best I have ever had and others, umm, well were disappointing. If you read the Tasting story (and my grading history) I think it will do a much better job putting this in perspective.

I was very much looking forward to my St Estephe tastings. While unfair to discount St Estephe based on Cos and Calon Segur tastings, it has certainly made it take a back seat and won’t search it out until I get to taste a great vintage from one of the estates, from my inventory or elsewhere (finally I saved money by not having to double up previous orders after the fact).

Tasted at the chateau:
2015 Chateau Capbern
2015 Le Marquis de Calon Segur
2015 Calon Segur

The wine was just ok? We had an incredible chateau representative but the wines did not show as I would have hoped and especially for a 2015. Now did St Estephe struggle in 2015 unlike everywhere else in Bordeaux or should these wines have been opened the day before or do I simply not prefer St Estephe (I doubt that to be the case but a fair question)- I am unable to get a read as I don't have the experience with these to provide an educated read or guess so as I did with Cos, I will not buy more (yay saving money) and will not search these out as I had planned but I will not write off the chateau or St Estephe until I have a great representation to accurately consider.

Bordeaux 2018 I: A first look at the 2018 vintage at a merchant tasting in Zurich with 11 red wines tasted. It might be quite difficult to judge the wines (I don't have 30 years barrel tasting experience) but some relative conclusions still can be made: 1) the best wines are as soft and elegant as the best 2016s (Figeac, Conseillante, Carmes HB, Rauzan Segla); 2) The aromatic complexity and precision of some wines is very exciting (Calon Segur, Figeac, Carmes HB), 3) There are some wines which cannot mask the high(er) alcohol levels (Pavie Maquin, Calon Segur, Leoville Poyferre). Overall, I still think that 2016 will ultimately be the better vintage thanks to lower alcohol levels and a cooler, purer fruit. On the other hand, I see 2018 a tad above 2015.

TN: There‘s so much fuzz about this wine that the En Primeur prices went up by 30-40% already just two weeks after its release. Several critics gave this wine extraordinary high ratings, including straight 100 points from JM Quarin, I critic I follow closely for Bordeaux wines as he rather finds greatness in elegance than high-octane/high-extraction wines. Well deserved praises? The complexity in this wine is off the charts, definitely above the level of the other wines I‘ve tasted that day. Layers and layers of floral aromas, lots of different herbs, dark fruit, some crushed rocks, cola. Highly intense, high precision. Quite rich and powerful but with well-integrated but noticable tannins (not as soft and luxurious as Figeac, Conseillante, Rauzan Segla) and a good freshness. The alcohol is at 14.9% and eventhough there is a lot of fruit and other aromas they cannot completely mask that. In summary, I definitely see that this is a great, singular wine which will bring a lot of pleasure but I doubt it can reach the Olympus of wines and get to the 100 points some critics see. For that it is just a tad too alcoholic and bold.

I see this wine somewhere in the 93 to 96 point range.

Wanting to see what I had purchased, I decided to pull the cork to get a sense of Calon Segur. This was my first experience with this producer and the raw components upon PNP did not disappoint. Beautiful coloring and nose. On the palate this wine was so raw that I decide it would be best to replace the cork and consumer over the week in small doses. Everyday marked improvement with depth and complexity. By the end of the week I've decide the next bottle might be at 5-8 years down the road. No sense in pulling one of these early. No doubt if this is in your cellar you'll be reward in time. This was every bit as intriguing as the triple 100 pt 16 Las Cases I had not long ago.

Opened after learning from another CT user that this was drinking well already. I bought three more bottles, then uncorked this. Incredibly saturated black purple with thick purple legs. Wow! Gorgeous deep nose, with ripe (not overly) fruit aromas. Very rich. Extremely attractive in the mouth, sooooo full of thick, rich fruit it is hard to believe. My God, this is one of the best wines I have had in my mouth in as long as I can remember. Fully a minute after swallowing, I am still experiencing all this wine has to offer. The best 2018 I have had thus far, and that is saying ALOT. 5-13-19-10: 97/100.

A really hard to understand wine for those who have not had a mind blowing claret weight wine in their lives. I would say that this is either a miss, or simply it is a long, long way away from home. With time, it throws warm barnyard notes and the smolder from the iron tinged soil of saint estephe starts to easily float off the top and into the senses. Now now...If you would have told me back in 03 that this was going to be a 30 year wait and see wine, I would have bought the Montrose. I dont have more of this, but it is a wine to watch. It is becoming clear that there are winners and fillers in every vintage, including the great ones. In general, I dont find 2000 to be a great QPR year in left bank Bordeaux....HOLD_

2nd WOTN, to me. Brought by JimAronson to this evening's festivities. There is no way this is a young Bdx....it's too fresh and new and good! 2.5 hour decant makes it sing right now. A clean wine with black fruit, it's balanced and smooth. There's a graphite/briar nose which sings, too. This adds to the string lately of young-ish Bdx ('15s, '16s, '19s) that have been such a pleasure to drink young. Thanks for bringing, James!

Addendum: tasted again with a late lunch, with more cheese and salami.....both nose and palate have moved toward Bdx now. The energy of the fruit which was almost Cali-like last night has calmed down after another 15+ hours in the bottle under cork, no gas or vacuum. Maybe a 92 now?

Addendum #2: 3rd day at lunch after having been sealed in small glass bottle in the fridge the last 2 days. As it warmed up a bit, beautiful lead pencil emerged on the nose, more of a slippery, silky graphite than yesterday. The fruit initially appeared redder and slightly tart but after an hour of air it was dark cherry/blackberry and smooth and with an elegance and power it had lost yesterday, weird. Some nice chalky minerality shows up, too. Now? An easy 95, again!

Sacrificed one out of a six pack. Beautiful young Calon. Sweet, ripe aromas with pencil lead, floral notes, oak at this point. The wine had fabulous texture, seamless, ripe, but firm. Long finish. Really good stuff. Won’t touch another for at least five years, save some for 15 years.

Bottle from cold cellar with excellent in neck fill. Garnet with slight browning towards translucent rim. Initially closed this needs a good hour in the decanter to open up. A fairly austere wine (well, this is St. Estephe) with dark fruit, leather and tobacco notes and a fair bit of cedar held in check by dusty medium (-) tannins. Short to medium finish.
I actually do enjoy this style of traditional claret but I can get this kind of experience with a good '88 or '94 left banker. For a fairly young 3rd growth from a very good vintage like 1996, I find the lack of fruit concentration, which reveals those prominent cedar notes and the dusty tannins rather disappointing.

PS: Wife scolded me for opening such a wine on a Friday evening...

From 375. Have seen a number of notes indicating this was drinking well and open for business so decided to try. Dark fruit and spice. This is approachable and delicious now, but there are significant tannins here and, for my tastes, this needs some time. While it was fun to take an early look at this, I will hold my remaining bottles for several years. Very good.

Berry Brothers 2018 Bordeaux en primeur (plus back vintages) (Lindley Hall, London): I hate to stick such a big score on an unfinished product and usually refrain from scoring en primeur wines, but boy, after drinking mainly 09s of top producers that evening this one hit you straight in the face with its obvious greatness. I could have drank the whole bottle! Silky, lovely fruit, such classy classy juice. Shame I didn't manage to pick it up en primeur. Will be looking out for that in secondary. BTW a LLC 18 tasted just after seemed very pale just after this Calon.

Brown, raisiny, prune juice not even suitable for cooking. Down the drain. Both bottles have been properly stored. This hasn't happened in quite a long time. Oh well...

Wonderful expressive exotic nose of black cherry,crème de cassis, graphite, fresh cut flowers, baking spices and sandalwood.Terrific ! What strikes you about this wine immediately,is the power of the fruit and it's concentration.Full-bodied and decadent, the palate is really impressive, with very complex flavors built around a core of concentrated,head-spinning ripe fruit,at the same time elegant, with incredible depth, focus and length.Just an amazing wine and a real pleasure to sit down and follow ower some time. Will it be better in 10-20 years ? My answer is clearly .. NO ! I don't need secondary and tertiary notes. This is magical ... NOW ! This is a perfect example how the climate change has also changed the style of Bordeaux wines.

Inspired--or is that egged on? :)-- by LiteItOnFire to crack one of these now, I did, because you don't have to twist my arm to drink 2018 Bordeaux way too early! This was decanted for 4 hrs then followed over around 24 hours.
It was amazingly open upon uncorking the bottle, but even better with a few hrs in the decanter. Interestingly, the tannins didn't clamp down at all until the next day, and even then they were not overbearing.
What you get with this wine is a giant bowl of super (perhaps over?) ripe fruit of the dark variety: blueberry, plum, dark cherry. It is full-bodied with high alcohol that is a bit noticeable, and there is quite a lot of oak spice, too much for the purists out there. A very seductive, hedonistic wine that will please a lot of people, myself included. I was just looking for more St Estephe quality though, although on day two a little clay and earthy funk began to peek through on the palate from behind all that luscious fruit, so in time the terroir might show through. But my instincts tell me these grapes were picked a bit too ripe and was oaked a bit too much. If you love Napa "Cult Cabs", though, you need to try one of these; it represents good value in the world of super-ripe Cab blends. I preferred a 1996 Calon we had not too long ago though for its aromatic complexity and terroir qualities. This vintage seems a bit like it could come from CA or even Tuscany, but it is a very enjoyable ride. I much prefer the Leoville Barton still in this vintage as they appeared to manage ripeness better in this warm vintage and their wine conveyed minerality and balanced oak more clearly. Rated: 94+

Boy, this thing was popping off like a fruity Napa cherry bomb for the first few hours of consumption. And...the heat wouldn't quit. Frankly, it was a bit blasted and kinda wonky on first pass. Patience young Jedi. Giving this a few hours of decant time made all the difference, shedding some of the Napa-meets-Paso-meets...Barossa...?! Cherry Pop Rocks and Red Bull Vodka eventually (thankfully) morphed into deeper black cherry, licorice, and cassis notes. Not a ton of earthy terroir to be had here; so, traditionalists might want to run for the hills (rather, 'les collines'). However, there are proper form and focus that certainly creep up to bring this closer to its motherland upon final sips.

This was served next to a 2018 Kinsman Anjea, which almost showed more BDX typicity than the Calon. Both shared pieces of each other in their attempts to straddle old and new world duality. Hold the Calon for 5+ years in order for the hootch to integrate. It's 15% ABV is no joke if you're sensitive to hot wine-dog breath shooting into your mouth. For now, wait for the bachelorette bus to back outta here and hope it isn't shut down come 2027. 94++ points, with upside once the Mojave mojo stops distracting from the otherwise delectable core.

I am not sure whether to mark this flawed or not, but it was so disappointing.
Double decanted an hour before leaving the house to attend a dinner. Tasted over the next 2 + hours and it never got better. Nose was decent but seemed like all the fruit had fallen out of this wine and left just wood/cedar on the palate. Of the many bottles brought that night, it was the only one half full at the end of the evening. It had not seemed corked when I opened it at home, but it just never opened up.
Now, after reading a review for the 2000, if this could have been better with a 5 hour decant. Most of the reviews of the 2000 are disappointing and sound a bit like this one. However, the most recent with a 5 hour decant ‘found’ the fruit.
So not sure if my experience here was due to a flawed bottle or user error.

Last bottle of a case consumed over the last couple of years. Fair amount of bottle variation within the case, from really dumb fruitless bottles to quite lovely and soft. This one was closer to the top end than the bottom, with quite a bit of vanilla on the nose as well as red berries. Earth and graphite on the palate with a lot of cherry and currant. Less muscular than my stereotype of a St Estephe. Fully mature, but no obvious signs of cracking up.

Bordeaux 2018 barrel tasting (Papiersaal Sihlcity, Zürich): Barrel sample tasted at a merchant event in Zurich. Out of a sample of 12 wines, my main conclusions were: 1) again a strong vintage as pundits claim with ripe fruit profiles the common theme, and 2) generally elevated alcohol levels proved less of an issue on the palate than I feared with hardly any unwanted heat on the palate. Within this small sample, my highlights were Calon Ségur (98) and Rauzan-Ségla (98) with Pichon Baron (97) not far behind.

Intriguing complexity and clearly one of the highlights as mentioned above. The fruit reminded me more of fruit tea than fresh berries. Herbal notes, sweet spices and violets complement the profile. This was great and even shone brighter then the 2016 (96), in my view.
