WineFanatic Bordeaux Offline (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – Light orangey-golden colour. On the nose mango, apricot, hand soap and hints of botrytis. Sweet but not cloying and perfectly balanced with a ton of acid. Pure and rich in the mouth giving notes of honey and melted brown sugar. Long finish. Drink or hold. Outstanding.

This is supposed to be a "light" year for d'Yquem, a relatively cheap year anyway. Well: just buy it. This is very good stuff, perhaps not as concentrated as the better or excellent years, but it has all you can expect from the world's most famous chateau for sweet wines. Lovely.

EWG Parties Like It's 1999 (Conrad Greens Abode): Nose of sweet tangerines, apricots and other citrus fruits. Still thick but pretty with a clean finish. Nicely balanced with a pastry quality. Showed a more balanced expression next to the Rieussec's fatness.

Yes it was a Yquem, but it didn't seem to have that extra omph. Seemed like a middle of the road Sauterne. Decent acidity but not lots of fruit to back it up and the boitritis seemed a bit lacking.

Occasional tasting with PZ and JvT: Nebbiolo plus some extra's. (@ PZ): See my previous note. Two years ago I scored the wine 94, now 92. Still a great score and wine, but did it shut down a bit? It is a light style Yquem, but it seemed to show less complexity this moment.

Other than the label, there is no reason to own or buy this wine. An abundance of better choices at half the price are available from the 01 vintage. Light honeyed yellow fruit without much centration of boytrytis make this an easy pass.

Only our 2. Yquem, but since the last was a 1988 the expectations where rather skyhigh.
Maybe that´s why I don´t know how good this was.
It has a lot of everything, right now it feels like to much. Hopefully with time it will melts more together.

Beautiful yellow/golden colour.
Strong scent of something rich, warm and sweet, that has been cooled down. Also a waxy feeling and strong aromas of dried fruits.
Strangely the sweetness doesn´t show at once, but fills the mouth in the middle and sticks to the gum and teeth for minutes.

Given 91, just because I need more experience, and have to do the dirty work of tasting more of it...

Will buy again, with the summer-salary

OK, it's Y'quem so you know it's going to be very good. This one, not great though?? Everything I expect in terms of weight and intensity (even from this vintage). Lacking some complexity (I know, I know....too young) but more disturbingly somewhat hot on the finish. I don't remember my other bottle finishing the same??

Bright, translucent amber in the glass. Enticing, rich and complex nose of hazelnut, peaches, tropical fruits, caramel. Very little botrytis. Delightful mouthfeel, not at all weighty, effortless and lengthy finish. A difficult year for Yquem and perhaps lacking some of the weight and depth of other vintages; nonetheless I enjoyed this immensely. Interesting, accessible and eminently drinkable. Can't say fairer than that.

This wine was performing much better than in previous tastings and also better than many other vintages. Classic almond, botrytis, honey notes. Really really good, I have to be patient with my other bottles.

An Evening of Vega Sicilia Unico. (Post House.): Shows a lot of VA on the nose with butterscotch, pineapple and a strong banana character. Sweet and thick on the palate with pleasant pineapple, honey and butterscotch flavors. Not too oaky, but it could use some more acidity. Well made and tasty, but lacks personality and verve. Imo, Sauternes always suffers when served alongside Chenin Blanc or Riesling-based dessert wines due to the differences in acid levels and the use of oak. Low A-. From 375.

First Growth Night 2011 (PRIMA): nose - dried apricot
mouth - mouthcoating, viscous, and delicious. honeysuckle and honey. Someone chimed in, what year is the 'd'yquem', to which bob replied 'what does it matter they all taste the same'. which made me reflect a little bit and realize that the sweetness so dumbfounds me that i should probably recuse myself from rating sauternes in general, or at least try a bunch of them side by side and learn myself a little something first

This wine is both outstanding and disappointing. Outstanding for how it drinks and disappointing for what it is. Apricots, honeysuckle, dried figs, and spices on the nose, and a balanced palate with beautifully balanced sweetness and acidity provide for a great experience. And it does taste unmistakably like Yquem. Yet, it is subdued and underwhelming when compared with other vintages. An affordable way to get to know Yquem, but not representative of the great vintages.

Having only ever tried d'Yquem once before (the 2004) and having such a reputation, I will try to be as objective as possible. Rich, golden colour; the nose however is truly unmistakable that is at first subtle, the aromas slowly sinew up your nostrils evoking ripe peaches in the Mediterranean, fresh exotic fruits, all sweetly perfumed. The palate was of figs, apricots and lemon; spritely, rich yet not too pronounced. I did notice that the acidity levels were not as voracious as the '04 (though perhaps this is merely due to age of the wine, and the time it has had to soften out). There is no denying that the exoticisim of the flavours and aromas are unlike any other wine, but at the same time it is also not the most complex or intriguing wine I have ever tasted. Is it worth the mythical status? Perhaps, but maybe not for this particular year ****1/2
