6/18/2015 - fingers wrote: NRFollowed this bottle for two days open. It was tough to define until the very end, when I feel it finally showed its true character. Early on, it was really crunchy and tight, some green meany-ness and unruly tannins. But the fruit and bouquet are nice, so you keep pushing through, trying to draw out a more satisfying impression. After subjecting the second half of the bottle to vigorous aeration, abuse, and even some cold and heat shock, I've got the wine I want. Smoother, more cohesive, and still there's a feeling it has more to give as it matures. I think I'll wait at least a year on my remaining bottles. 11 people found this helpful, do you? 9/1/2019 - fingers Likes this wine: 95 pointsA year ago, I stated that I didn’t think there was much room for improvement. Wrongo bongo. The fantastic bouquet is now fully expressing itself on the palate as well as the nose. Deep, lush, beautiful florals and candied berries with a fine tactile grip of tannins. 10 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

5/18/2020 - fingers Likes this wine: 94 pointsA dramatic transformation over the past year. Right at the pop, a profound and magnificent garden of flowers and spices greet the nose. Dusty dark purple color, about 80% opaque with heavy sediment, but very pretty in the glass. Appropriately warm and ripe, the mouthfeel manages to smooth things over for the tasty and undeniably-Zinfandel palate of flavors that follow. I believe the 26% of other varieties help hold down the typical jammy character and add some tannic backbone. If the fruit was shy before, it has now found its multi-faceted promiscuous streak. 10 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/1/2021 - fingers Likes this wine: 93 pointsNotes after 6 hours open. Extra dark ruby color with a thin hint of garnet at the rim, small amount of sediment. Profound aromas that take me straight to Left Bank, but the palate is just ripe and New World-ly enough that I would find myself hard-pressed to guess Bordeaux if given blindly. A term that I have rarely, if ever, used in a tasting note:”fleshy” is what I think applies here as well. It’s as if someone peeled a beautiful bunch of grapes and left nothing but the meat for me. I think it’s happy to serve now with extended aeration but also won’t see any decline for a very long time. 9 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (9) |

8/3/2021 - fingers Likes this wine: 93 pointsDecided to take an early look-in and yes, it is still very young and tannic. But after 4 hours in a decanter it finally starts to show all the underlying bouquet complexity and pleasure I would expect from a $75+ Cali Cab. Another year, or better yet, five, will get this puppy into much friendlier territory, though I’m still happy to have satisfied my curiosity with it tonight. 5+12+17+9= 93 |

8/12/2018 - fingers Likes this wine: 94 pointsI’m in complete agreement with Vancouver’s note from two weeks ago. This seems to be on the early edge of prime time and is showing many of the attributes that made it such a hit with Parker, et al. Serving temp made a big difference in enjoyment and it was best on the cool side, 60-65 deg. 9 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

12/6/2021 - fingers Likes this wine: 90 pointsWell, it's been 10 months so I figured I would check in on this. Within 30 minutes of uncorking, I could tell this is much more open and generous than it was in February, yet there is still plenty of youthful tension between the acidity and tannins. The bouquet is offering up dark berries and baking spices, a little vanilla and forest green. Medium finish. Still seems like it's on the way up but no harm to try now if you have multiples. I expect it to really find the zone next summer. 5+11+16+8= 90 8 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

3/16/2022 - fingers Likes this wine: NRJust as special as 3 years ago. Cork in perfect shape. Followed over 4 hours open and it took a good hour to fully seam together. Such a lovely bouquet and the palate just haunts with its persistence. I am really happy to have a mag remaining. |

9/4/2018 - fingers Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark ruby color, about 80% saturated with clear legs and no sediment. Profound, smoky funky meaty tar-ish nose with a nice, high lift of floral notes at the end. Mouthfeel is full and rich, sweet, and on the verge of full maturity. Medium acidity and tannins. There is a touch of heat but considering the territory, it's perfectly acceptable and unobtrusive. An earlier review mentioned Cornas and I agree in the similarity. Followed for two days open and it stood up well. 5+12+16+7 = 90 |

10/3/2016 - fingers Likes this wine: 91 pointsHappy to find this in fine form after reading the prior reviewer's experience. Beautiful ruby crimson color with some chunky sediment in the punt. Nose is tangibly Napa, medium intensity and softened considerably after a few hours open. Pleasant composition of dusty minerals and tannins on the palate with lovely fruit and wood esters throughout. Lingers for 1-2 minutes after swallowing. The vibrancy and bouquet slowly faded over the course of 12 hours. I would say it's ready and will hold steady for a couple more years, and good for BYO since it does well on pop n pour. Sorry Winedr, I might question the source of your bottles. 5+11+17+8= 91 |

6/28/2021 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsFollowed for 18 hours open. Cork in perfect shape. Garnet/root beer color with very slow clear legs and a small amount of sediment. Bright aroma of cherries, some flowers, a little tar and tobacco, but it also seemed to oxidize rather quickly. It took a good few hours for the tannins to behave and make the wine easier to drink, but by the time it got there I felt like the bouquet was losing steam. Food was also helpful and I think the wine was better with than without. I know it's only 9 years old, but I think this wine is probably near its peak and won't necessarily be the long-runner that many BdM's are capable of. 7 people found this helpful, do you? 12/29/2022 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsNotes after 30 minutes open, after it blew off a bit of matchstick. Straw/light gold color, clear and sound. Medium intensity aroma of honeydew, lemon-marshmallow, a little spicy peanut, and vanilla. Palate is light to medium bodied with just enough acidity to really make you want to swish it around in the mouth and take your time swallowing. Flavors are a lovely mélange of fruits with medium intensity and complexity. Medium length finish. Beautiful, even if it isn't as profound as its bigger brothers. Seems ready to drink or can hold for a few more years. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

3/31/2023 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsMy fourth bottle, but my first tasting note. I can say that my first 3 were real rollercoasters as they unfolded with air and time. And even after they settled for a few days open, it was a unique flavor profile that I just couldn't wrap my head around. This bottle from the pop was enjoyable and really a lot of fun. I'm still going to go have to look up what the heck "GTM" blend is, but the overall structure of the wine is melding into something I can appreciate. One thing's for sure: this should rate highly on anyone's "yum" scale. Especially with a good cheeseburger. |

7/7/2018 - fingers Likes this wine: 95 pointsFollowed over three hours in a Gabriel Glas Gold stem. Medium straw color (actually, a perfect "Champagne" hue) with a very light haze and a very fine and broad mousse. Profound, doughy aroma. Super energetic on the palate with the depth of flavor I hope for in a top-tier Champers. A lot of nice flinty mineral stuff going on in here. Plenty of acidity that seems to help mask the alcoholic punch of the wine, which is notable. I love that there's both some bite and umami on the tail end. Surely, still on the way up. 5+12+18+10= 95 |

5/15/2017 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsIt took a good hour and a half of air to stitch together and was really best after about 4 hours open. I agree with Tim about the serving temp. At 60deg, it had some vibrancy to compliment the oodles of fruit. But the warmer it got the flabbier it got, though I'm still rather smitten with the huge fruit cocktail just on its face value. Almost a year since my last taste and it seems to be quite the same as before. 5+12+17+8= 92 |

6/27/2020 - fingers Likes this wine: NRNoticeable uptick in development from two years ago and it still seems capable of more. The spectrum of flavors is greater now and the energy and tension feel just as strong. This could still be peaking 10 years from now, in my humble guesstimate. A large format would be a nice birth-year gift come 2029. |

12/5/2023 - fingers Likes this wine: 92 pointsAlmost two years since my last bottle and I get only a slight change in character. The bouquet seems to have a darker tobacco note and the texture is a little smoother, naturally. I feel it is doing well at 9y/o and although it may still benefit with a little more time, I don't see any harm in enjoying now. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

8/21/2018 - fingers Likes this wine: 89 pointsTime to check in and see how this is doing. Followed over two nights and it needed a few hours to really open up. Dark and saturated ruby color with a wide fade to the rim. Medium intensity nose with some nice florals and dark berries. Young, though friendly tannins grip the palate but are not blocking the enjoyment. I didn’t expect such a subtle and understated wine but I’m no worse off for it. It’s actually quite lovely and should pick up some nice mature notes in a few years. Alcohol pretty well in check. At least one of my future bottles will be designated for a nice cut of prime rib. 4+11+16+8= 89 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

8/6/2018 - fingers Likes this wine: 90 pointsNotes after five hours open. For the first hour, I was afraid that this was so locked down that I would be waiting another several years before it’s ready, but air is a magic influence on some wines and this was certainly one. By the 2 hour mark, the tannins seemed to really settle down and a generous bouquet of dark juicy fruit, tar, black licorice, cigar wrapper, and roses came in. By the fourth hour, it was fully giving up the goods and made a great accompaniment to good ol' pot roast and veggies. The wine reminds me of Billy Dee Williams... smooth and dark. 5+11+16+8= 90 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
