Dinner at Hermosa (Chicago, IL): Very good for Agrapart -- I like the wines more in ripe vintages because they tend to fill out more and this bottle bears that out. Definitely still a very lean style, but there's more fruit and breadth on the palate, coupled with that lean acid cut. I do like the intensity of the chalky finish here.

On opening this was tight, thin, lacking expression, and just plain unenjoyable; I was surprised as over the next five hours it continued to improve to the point where my last glass showed nice fruit with excellent transparency and a great finish; Nice but needs lots of air time

Venus seems to take a long time to come around, but it’s pretty thrilling stuff. We recently had a bottle of this served right after popping and this example, for comparison, was decanted 2 hours. I found the nose reasonably quiet, but the palate is simply bursting with life - Meyer lemon, cream, brioche, lime, mineral. Such energy and length. I become more of an Agrapart fan with every bottle. Probably best to hold the 12 Venus longer.

Weekend in Westport; 8/25/2021-8/29/2021 (Westport, CT): This was one of the wines I was most excited to try especially because we have a few of them and are currently aging them. Needs a lot more years. We opened and decanted and drank over the course of a few hours. It's very tight but there's a lot to like there. Right now high tannins and some red fruits and yet still just generally tight. Give it a lot more time.

My first taste on this wine and blindly tasting it was more Burgundylike than Ermitage. Decanted for one hour, bright ruby color, nose of floral, fruits, minerals, light body (probably for this 08’ cool vintage) and spicy after taste. Surprisingly we did not feel the high alcohol content. A very juicy and comfortable wine in summer time.

Nose of red berries and cherries, with cedar and flint.

This has attained more of a familiar WV Pinot profile since a tasting at the winery in 2019. Back then it was candied fruit, now it is more red cherries and spice, with some darker Marionberry. The carbonic/amphora question seems to have a favorable answer.

Not at the level of previous bottles. Does Champagne go through a dumb phase? In any case, this wine was perfectly fine, but not much better. And I've had it at least three times in the past and been blown away each time. On this occasion the wine never fully opened although open for 10 hours. Delicate aromas of citrus fruit, toast, some vanillin. Inarticulate though, without detail or pungency. The wine feels focused and has energy, but seems like it's middle section was removed. My take is that I caught it in an in-between phase in it's life, or that this bottle was imperfect. Who knows...

6/19/2021 8:12:00 AM - John Gilman has held the view that champagne goes through dumb or closed stages. With good growers, such as Agrapart, the aging curve is something that there is not an established view. I suspect it will be somewhere between white burgundy cru’s and the higher doses from big houses.

With a serious depth of color, this hedonistic thrill ride opens with an aromatic display of truffle, flowers, dark chocolate, herbs, black cherries and plum. Plush, opulent, rich and with the texture of silk and velvet, the wine coats your palate with layers of fresh, sensuous, perfectly ripe fruits, chocolate and truffle. This full-bodied wine is only going to get better with age. If you can wait a decade, this will be even better. The wine blends 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc

5/10/2021 8:03:00 AM - Would love to hear you thoughts on how L'Eglise Clinet doing the malo in tank will extend the aging curve? I see mid '90s LEC tasting notes that the wine benefits from decanter time. My suspicion is that good LEC vintages need 20 years and great ones 25+

After 2 distinctive, expressive and inspired experiences in the interim, this regressive bottle is best described by my April 2019 notes. Stoich and lacking palate fruit, blackberry only appears on the grippy, almost drying finish. Fearing the fate of 4 btls and 1 magnum remaining.

Super astringent dark cherry, herbaceous and drying. Consistent with previous bottles, yet even more extreme since last tasted. Seems like stemminess and whole-cluster fermentation has bitten this wine in the butt. Don't even think of drinking this without food. At least for tonight, a disappointing wine from a bulletproof producer.

11/7/2020 6:53:00 AM - Thank you for the note. I have had a few 2015 Oregon Pinot Noirs that are in a closed or shut down stage. Personally, and based since I prefer aged wines, I would not give up. With the big table style of some whole clusters, unfiltered and unfined, and Cattrall own rooted vines, should produce wines that add complexity with age if well cellared.

Fresh off the truck. On the ripe side, dark colored. Subtle
forest notes on the nose. Palate is rather underwhelming given the color and ripeness—seemingly less acidic and structured than 17/18–which makes it seem a bit watery and hollow on mid-palate. Seemed to freshen up up with air. The only ‘16 I recall having from Kelly Fox. Favor the more structured’17/18’s at this point.
Better on night 2 with whole cluster notes adding a nice dimension of spiciness on the palate. Aromatics popped a little better. I was probably too hard on this on day one. Give it some air—though the expression is still unique compared to more recent vintages.

The 2018 Chardonnay Seven Springs Vineyard is showing beautifully out of the gates, bursting from the glass with notes of fresh pear, white peach and grapefruit oil, complemented by a lovely framing of wheat toast and almond. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and incisive, its pretty core of fruit is inherently generous but also tightly wound, structured around racy acids and chalky extract.

First sampling of this since purchase 13 years ago. Darker ruby. Nose of raspberry, brambly soil, violets, soothing blue fruits. A core of beautifully ripe but mature black cherry fruit girded by a fine-grained array of savory soil and iron on the palate. Freshening acidity and moderated tannin leading to a long finish of deepening black raspberry fruit, satin, spice, and iron particles. Exceedingly satisfying, a great showing.

Have recently heard good things about Hazelfern. Avalon and Vinopolis are great wine shops to sign up for their newsletters and just hear what they have to say. I support smaller makers, as long as they are more thoughtful makers and not so high alcohol.
