1999 DRC Horizontal. My 2nd bottle and sad to say it's even worse than the prior. A nearly tasteless orange cooking wine. Avoid. (3027/3590)

Tasted blind.
The aromatics were beautiful in the glass. This wine stood out from the lineup immediately.
Palate was very elegant with power well manged in a silken glove.
Finish didn't end.
By far the best wine of a night of amazing wines.

More red fruit than the Richebourg tonight but also a bit more acidic and shrill. Improves and rounds out with air, but I’d give the nod to Richebourg tonight.

Served blind. Shocking how accessible this was as pop and pour. Brooding but not nearly as tannic as I would expect. Dark fruit and a touch of sauvages.

Bottle No. 15.914 from 17.193 bottles produced. Directly from the Domaine. Pristine bottle, perfect cork. Fully mature colour, with a healthy red core; complex and harmonious nose, very aromatic but also totally relaxed, vestiges of crushed red berry fruit, orange zest, jasmin, tobacco, truffle, honey, warm spices, whole coriander seeds, excellent depth; firmly structured palate, with a racy, citrussy acidity and smooth tannins, on the lighter side but it does not lack stuffing, very good flavour intensity; relatively dry but expansive finish, Grande Champagne Cognac, excellent length. Very impressive but also fragile - it is best almost straight from the bottle, and loses definition in the glass very quickly. Drink now. At La Maison d’Olivier Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet, France.

Still so young but very approachable already. Effortless poise. Dark fruits with a lovely sweet perfume and palate. Obviously still quite compact but has everything to age beautifully for decades. Sadly, my last two bottles.

Magnum: Coming from a less that great year, small production and a cold, wet year. Alas this had held up well, with a good seal still on the cork closure. Started with some sweet fruit and saline flavours. Opened up over the course of the magnum to be more oyster saline and Hoisin sauce. Wonderful to see the wine open up and change. Special to have had.

From Magnum with a fill that was around high shoulder. The cork was very crumbly but had provided a good seal. I gave it a 6 hours Audouze and it really did perform above expectations. There was some honey and nuts to the aroma, along with Hoisin, soy, forest floor and decaying plant matter. It had some vinous sweetness in the mouth and loads of savoury nuance. It wasn't particularly deep or long but was beguiling, changing with each sip and gaining dimension. There were some dried herb and floral spice and acidity was fresh on the finish and the salty soy flavours lingered.

Finally an on fire bottle of 01 Ech. Seductive nose with spice, red currant, coffee beans, perfume and flower. Palate was smoothe, silky and expressive with layers of coffee beans, cinammon, ginger flower and sweet red currant. An amazing DRC Echezeaux. One could argue it lacked the power of some of the better and younger vintage, but it was alluring and light on its feet. Superb.

Still a long way from maturity, but this bottle was more open and slightly more advanced than I expected. Layers of purple fruit on the palate. Nose took some time to open and even then the spice notes on begrudgingly. Great weight across the midpalate and finish. 97+

Small and simple dinner gathering with some special friends, no formal notes.
I wish I have been more sober and would have had more time to enjoy it when this was served.
I also wish that the wines tonight would have been served the other way around, starting with Bourgogne before Bordeaux instead.
Anyway:
This is a wine that I have always wanted to try, and tonight it finally happened.
Starts out with an amazing nose, straight out of the decanter.
Too much to remember and too much going on to even try to properly describe.
This wine is like opening a door into another dimension.
Layers of scents jumps out of the glass, a beautiful, indescribable perfume with a mix of black and red fruit out of this world, combined with spices never blended together before, expensive tea, stones and dust, truffle, stems, medicine, flowers ( a whole meadow of them), sous bois…I could go on forever I believe.
Palate is nothing short of just amazing.
A blend of power and finesse, iron and silk.
Concentrated dark and red fruits, lovely mix of fine berries, Vosne spices, lovely stems, loads of minerals, more spices in an unreal mix, touch of truffle and umami.
Layers after layers shows, with an incredible length and structure.
The 1990 La Tâche is nothing short of perfect.
(100+)

My second of two bottles. Whereas the prior one was flawed, marred by some sort of mold, this was a very different story, notwithstanding a terrifyingly low fill. Opened 6 hours in advance to allow to slow-ox. The ancient-looking cork came out relatively whole, but for a stub bit that tumbled into the wine. No signs of seepage, but the edges were crusted with a fine dusting that I think may have been a sort of deterioration of the metal seal. I could tell we were in luck from the sweet fruit aromas that quickly emerged, and was not to be disappointed when I returned to the cellar that evening. My friend and I started with a small pour, remarking on how light-colored, almost translucent the wine was in the glass. From a single sip, he said he sensed a touch of madeirization, but I didn't detect any such aspect. Maybe he was trying to dampen expectations? The fruit was very present for me, backed up by a rich, glycerined texture, presumably from long-ago new oak. In any case, we topped up our pours and set the glasses aside for thirty minutes or so. Upon returning, it was indisputable that the wine had gained density in appearance, something we had not noticed any time before. And the wine was singing! Sweet and tart red fruit: cranberries, rhubarb, orange oil and something more exotic we couldn't identify exactly (he said cola at one point but I didn't agree). The wine continued to change throughout the evening, showing smoked meat, bacon fat, exotic spice and that awesome viscosity. My friend had been with me a week before when I gave two wines (1964 Ausone and 1990 Cailloux Centenaire) 100 points each -- he gleefully pronounced these better! For me, this Richebourg fell fractionally below perfection, but when emotion is taken into account it ranks as amongst my most unforgettable wines.

When it was poured against the 89 Richebourg, La Tache and 93 GE, it was much thinner on the palate. Nice aromatics of sweet red currant, potpourri and minerals. The fruit was slightly tart.
