Very polished tannins, almost too soft but still fine, aromatically I wished for more depth but this may develop with bottle age. 94-95 |

2/8/2017 - William Kelley Likes this wine: 91 pointsThe 1999 Clos de Tart is still a very young wine and it may well have a lot more to give, but it is hard to read at this stage. The overriding impression is of powerful, dense wine with nice balance and potential for the long haul, but without the amplitude and incipient complexity of the very best examples of this vintage. |

2/3/2017 - salil wrote: 92 pointsRecess: Good at first, but this got substantially better with air. It's a touch awkward on the palate initially with the acid sticking out on the back end, but comes together and feels much more harmonious with some time in the glass, while opening out aromatically to show more floral and herbal scents around its core of red fruit. |

2/2/2017 - Burgundy Al wrote: 94 pointsCasual Burg Dinner with Three Tarts and Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): This has always been a perplexing wine, and tonight's bottle was no different. Open 3 hours before serving, with one hour in decanter. Reticent and angular to start, but this opened up slowly, showing ripe red fruit and intense savory spice and concentration with great length and nuance. This will never be a wine to quickly taste and assess, rather it will always be a contemplative wine requiring undivided attention, so open/serve accordingly in order to fully appreciate this wine's full brilliance and potential. |

2/2/2017 - Burgundy Al wrote: 92 pointsCasual Burg Dinner with Three Tarts and Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Ripe red fruit throughout with savory spice. Came across as wonderfully harmonious for the first hour in glass, with moderate density and length. Finish seemed slightly clipped after an hour+ in glass. Best to pop-and-pour for near-term pleasure through 2020. |

Flavors are more simply ripe and less exciting, seeming somewhat roasted to me. Good now, but I wouldn't see any upside from here. |

1/27/2017 - Kemo Sabe Likes this wine: 94 pointsA real range of views on this wine. My score is a potential score. The wine is not there yet but the underlying material is present. When first opened the nose offered nothing. Literally nothing. A few dusty notes but nothing one would associate with a grape. My immediate conclusion was to be patient and drink this over many hours. 2 hours in with some swirling it's starting to give off some nice dark fruit but mainly reticent. This is a deep, dark colored wine. On the palate this is big and balanced not showing it's 18 years of age. Again, in spite of its size it's restrained. This is a beast waiting to come out of its cage. The tanins are silky and the texture is amazing which is why I believe this is a very high quality wine. 4 hours in and this is slowly evolving and didn't come around as much as I'd hoped. It's good today but I believe this will outstanding in time. In sum, if you're going to drink this now give it a good long decant (3-4 hours). Preferably hold these and try after 2020. |

1/27/2017 - Collector1855 wrote: 94 pointsEvolved faster than I thought in 0.75 format. Still a good wine, very soft tannins and high drinkability with autumn leaves, earth, red fruit. Just a bit tired, tannic grip and tension missing vs. a few years ago. The price you pay for softer, earlier drinking wine making. Good but not the best showing today. Drink up. 94+ |

1/23/2017 - barolo300 Likes this wine: 95 pointsViolets and florals on the nose with cherry and a hint of darker fruit. Beautiful on the palate. Unctuous and full of fruit. Bursting. Soft tannins, a bit of acidity to raise it and then a long finish. Will go for many years... |

6/25/2016 - Paul S wrote: 94 pointsDinner at Ming San's (Ming San's): Superb, and seemingly getting better each time I come back to it. The slimness and definition of the 2001 vintage really serves as a nice counterpoint for Clos de Tart's usually full throttle, big-wine style. The nose came across as a deeper, richer variant of the Clos des Lambrays that preceded it, with swirls of earth and spice curling around a darker core of rich cherry and berry aromas. Like the Clos des Lambrays though, it was also on the palate where this wine really showed its chops. The typical power was there in spades, with mouthfilling flavours of dark berries and cherries layering the palate along with dashes of Morey's spice and earth. Yet in the midst of all this, everything somehow came across absolutely pure and clean, almost pristine, with a lovely transparent feel to every part of the palate. Fine tannins and juicy acidity lent a sense of structure that promises many more years of aging in the bottle before it hits its peak, but this is fast becoming a special wine. |

1/4/2017 - PanosKakaviatos Likes this wine: 92 pointsRandy's superb holiday feast at 1789 (1789 Restaurant in Georgetown, Washington D.C.): I recall serving this wine back in August 2008, while being a wine steward for Chanticleer Restaurant on Nantucket Island. And it contributed to my increasing love for all things Burgundy. Impressive density and with ultra-ripe (bordering on over-ripe) fruit, which was what the aromatics first revealed. The palate was substantial and quite opulent but I got a slight burly aspect as well as a touch of drying on the finish. Served side by side with the de Montille Pommard Les Rugiens of the same vintage, I gave the edge to the latter. |

11/13/2016 - chablis28 wrote: 91 pointsThis btl was in general, a disappointment. Thankfully I bought this a while ago and did not pay the current auction price of $343 per. This wine was its absolute best on the nose for about the first 30 seconds after I pulled the cork. There was nice burst of spicy fruit that soon reverted to reductive light sulfur and not much else. The palate too very early on was very promising, showing; elegance, depth and class but this wine never stayed in the same place for long. Awkward and unrewarding vs expectations. At points, especially near the end this wine was closed down and tannic. The applicable score range was anywhere from 93pts early on for the palate to 90 points at mid point to 87pts in the end when it had very little to offer. Since it was my btl I followed it more closely than others and did enjoy some brief pleasure but it was altogether fleeting and allusive. I would not recommend buying this wine at todays price and as its future is uncertain. If you own one, I'd be inclined to give it at least a few more years before you try it. My last btl and happy to regain a spot in the cabinet. |
