Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Burwood): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas, a little meaty, tiny touch of tomato leaf, raspberry, brambles, plum, sweet spice, slight forest floor, earth, clay with time. Juicy, fleshy, the fruit has a tiny little bitter tug at the palate, tannins are powdery and in support, finishes savoury, long, nice.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Burwood): From Coravin. Brambles, slight tar, a little liquorice, fresh earth, black tea, touch of mulchy undergrowth and blood with time. The more savoury elements translates to the palate; meaty, touch of yeast extract over non-delineated fleshy fruits, tannins are a background whisper, earthy, leathery notes, mushrooms on the finish. Hmm. Nice but tidy up

Winefield's pre-sale tasting: Always a joy to taste this 2000; cracking fresh fruit, lively citrus, an elegant and concentrated taste and tasty bitters bitters. The firm tannins (hallmark of the 2000 vintage) are very acceptable in the dense aftertaste.

After a dead bottle this was much better despite a quite heavily depressed cork. It came out nearly whole. Lost a glass to sediment. Looks it’s age but a healthy garnet. Mature claret nose, mostly cassis dominated. Still plenty of fruit, weak blackcurrants but nicely mature. Rounded as I remember this vintage (not had one for 13 years). Fully mature but still holding well. Just a hint of acidity showing. Needs drinking but a nice wine.

Picked up 5 of these cheaply at auction recently. This one was mid shoulder and had signs of seepage. Slow oxygenation for 6 hours couldn’t revive it. Oxidised and too far gone. Open another.

Seemed much less muted than the others, perhaps coming out of a dumb period. Some lovely black fruit and cedar. An enjoyable bottle.

This opened very much as previous bottles with plenty of classic Margaux character of blackcurrants, violet dark chocolate and cedar. The palate is a tiny bit attenuated on the finish but it's a quibble in the overall package. Delicious week-day wine.

Still so fresh, with a pretty bouquet of deep sweet blue and black fruit on open. Decanted for an hour and that seemed to be enough to at least begin a more balanced integration. The tannins were present but felt like they were beginning to integrate more than previous reviews noted. Enjoyed the wine with steak and enjoyed it indeed. Still plush fruit but not overbearing tannins works for me!

Magistral. 93+

First glass poured and the remaining of the bottle enjoyed after one month (the bottled was vacuumed).
the first glass was really not appealing. very simple nose, thin and disjointed palate. I kept the remaining of the bottle for cooking.
One month later the wine is transformed. The nose is beautiful, a tad of oxydation notes of course, but there was really fine notes of candied violet and blueberries. the palate was medium body, smooth, fresh with good length. this probably means that the wine is either not ready and/or it needs to breath for a while before tasting.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux and Mosel (My place, Kent Street): from Coravin. Wet earth, leather, Autumn leaves, brambles, very cold country copse, aa little soy and porcini, tobacco leaf. Slightly sour black and red fruits, coarse flour textured tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish, leather, slight umami and soy notes. Veering rapidly to complete tertiariness but pleasant enough.

Dark ruby red with pink-purplish rim. Black fruits, dark cherry, violet, and wood. Bold fruits, full bodied but not heavy. Medium silky tannin, velvet texture. Medium finish. Wine got better after 2 hours in decanter.

Sinking cork, even with the Durand the cork crumbled on exit consequently it was very gently decanted. on the nose it's initially quite herbaceous; mint; even a little green capsicum, brambles, leather, earth, a touch of red plum, cedar, sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy with wild dark hued fruits, tannic burr is still faintly drying and wholemeal flour textured, fruit persists joined by leather, the herbaceous note is more tobacco leaf on the palate. Really lovely. What a nice surprise.
Consumed with lamb chops

Lovely, very much alive colour. Very fragant on the nose. Nicely mellowed tannins of considerable quality. Taste is not super complex but highly enjoyable. Shows no age, perfect to drink now. The bottle emptied very quickly. A very good wine indeed!

I own the 2000 as well, but I prefer the 2001 actually. I think it has more substance than the more famous brother.

Edit: I see a number of notes that are rather negative. I honestly cannot share that experience at all. I have owned many vintages of this wine over the years, starting all the way back with the 1976. The 2001 is a very good representative of this property, in my experience. I will add that I buy all my Bordeaux en primeur and have a good cellar.

This wine is again from my 'Lost Cellar' and showed a dark color with some edge bricking. The nose was very forthcoming with blackcurrant, violets and cedar in a classically Margaux package. The palate had a rich ball of expressive fruit giving way to tertiary features of cocoa and cedar that persist nicely around a soft background of mature tannin. This is a lovely bottle that has opened with maturity in true Margaux fashion.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Meaty and savoury, a touch of blood here as well initially. With time and agitation a touch of mint and red and black hued fruits; plums, currants, touch of sweet spice on the nose. It's quite herbaceous on the palate though with drying, slightly woody, tooled tannins that prove a little coarse and green, fruit relegated to the background. Promising nose let down by palate.

Disclaimer: I simply can't believe this is a Grand Vin de Bordeaux.

1st bottle of 6 purchased in 2022. I wish I had bought both half cases. PnP but consumed over 3 hours during cooking and eating. Served at 20C rising to 22C by the end of the meal. 13.5%. Provenance perfect. My advice: decant one hour and enjoy but be mindful of the temperature.

This wine is textbook Margaux. In my reviews, I often write about the first thing I notice in wine: the colour. But with this wine, its the perfumed, Margaux nose. Its unmistakable, its amazing, and it envelops you as you pour the wine. Wow. The colour is dark, dark garnet with no bricking. Still young, youthful, and powerful, but not overpowering like some 2005 Bordeaux at this stage.

The nose is perfumed, floral, and deep: amazing, and intoxicating. Ah, Margaux.

Taste: medium bodied but deceptively rich and long. Again, textbook Margaux. Great balance between Cabernet and Merlot (and some Cab Franc?). Classic. Not your turbocharged, heavy 2005 here. So much more enjoyable than the "blockish" Prieure-Lichine 2005.

This is a beautiful Margaux. Drink and enjoy within the next five years.

I think this is the first time I've thought 'too much tobacco and leather' in a Bordeaux. I don't know enough about Brett and 'Bordeaux faults' to speculate, but it was less pleasant than the last two. Limited fruit, and the leather/tobacco crossed a line to being a bit unpleasant. Hopefully my remaining nine bottles are more like the last one.

Decanted 1.5 hours.
