Nose: hints of banana, black pepper, black fruits, forest, rose petals, raspberry, spices
Notes: time after time I've wanted to give this Domaine one more shot to prove myself wrong and to seek to understand why this remains one of the most expensive and reputable wineries in Burgundy and time after time I've failed to understand. The winemaking is really too heavy and I am unable to appreciate this Domaine. Drank after opening for 3 hours, I am not sure if more time is required but certainly the nose is not very expressive and the palate is too heavy. I don't think this will improve more although I think this is still quite young and has plenty of life ahead of it. I find this to be a stylistic issue rather than a price or value issue for me personally.

Looked slightly aged on initial pour, weak nose
But after about 1 hr much better color, nose, ruby red, earthy, dark berries , excellent with Beef Wellington at Ponte’s restaurant in Tampa I would Say 93-95

Very light red berries, very feminine, forest floor... Tannin present, a bit dry finish, red berries, a bit strict finish...

Nose of forest floor, a bit closed, red berries... Nice concentration, but cold vintage, tannin integrated, a bit light on it's feet...

Bright and sunny fruit, almost masculine body. Curiously lacking in minerality, felt a bit new world.

Lots of tertiary here and more generous up against the 2017. Got plenty of earth, ripe but dried cherry fruit, raspberries, spices, well resolved oak and touches of cocoa powder. The issue I have here is that 08 acid, just kinda jutting out a little too much for my comfort. Otherwise, a lovely pour

Really wound up at the moment, and needs tremendous breathing to wake up. Lacking that 17 generosity. Also quite dark fruited; cherries, raspberries, and touches of liqueur. I think this has the stuffing to be something delicious but today, it just needs to sort itself out first.

Even ruby. Very floral, menthol, and after about an hour, ripe fruit aromas come up. Flawless, harmonious texture-middle weight, pure without oak, and a gentle earth base. Black cherry that is perfectly ripe yet not sweet, real salinity, licorice, and excellent balancing acidity that has a cranberry twist. Open, pliant, and forthcoming for the first two hours before fine grained tannins assert themselves. Gorgeous Premier Cru Chambolle, so good now yet probably 5+ years from its apogee.

This was a good study in that the 2016s need air. At first a bit muted and quite medicinal, this opened up more and more, became more balanced, refined with the fruit becoming brighter and delicate floral notes coming forward. Very promising but needs time and air.

TN: Very intense bouquet with tons of dark cherries, smoke, stems, some menthol. Intriguing but intense and quite ripe nose. On the palate there is a lot of menthol, some medicinal notes, ripe cherries, some smoke and stems atound the red fruit core. Gets rounder and softer with the fruit coming out more and more the longer it sits in the glass. Last sip was best with exploding red berries and floral fruits towards the finish. Lots of finesse and good freshness, airy texture, good balance (with time).

Decanting: At least an hour in a decanter is advised.

Half bottle. Opened and poured. First some char, high toned green, and even some cheese rind before black and dark cherry fruit started to come to the forefront. Medium weight that became more airy as it went-still, this was muscular and somewhat burly for Chambolle. Ripe fruit, excellent acidity, late soil, licorice, and moderate remaining tannin. Even from a small format, it is not fully mature. Very good effort and fine for the vintage, but it is not nearly as elegant or complex as the best Mugneret wines.

Sure, this will get better with age but boy is it tasty now. Black fruit and Vosne spice with hints of oak, the palate has a roundness and sweetness that make it effortless to drink. This wine shows a ripeness that I’d be surprised the 2012 had at age 4. The 2012 I had a couple years back has an ethereal elegance that I wonder if the 2020 will age into, given that it seems bigger and richer. Either way, I have high hopes for this vintage.

Still fairly tight. Red fruit, red flowers, musk and spice blend together on the nose. The palate has medium tannins, soil, red fruit, spice and a gamy character. Medium tannins, mostly integrated. Long finish. This is a burly wine.

Two weeks in France; 4/12/2024-4/24/2024: Lucky to take the last bottle of this at Bistro Volnay for 175€. Similar to the ‘17 Chaignots last week - started off dense and a little rustic, but with time the silky structure emerged. More refined than NSG but would benefit from more time.

A private dinner (Wine Bar La Cuverie de Vosne-Romanée, Vosne-Romanée, France): Delightfully pure and precise, transparent and elegant, cool and minerally, flowers and Asian spices, sweet and juicy fruit of freshly crushed red berries, cherries and peaches, silky texture, judicious oak, papery tannins, mildly austere finale with very good resonance and length. Textbook Lutenières, very delicious.

Decanted for two hours before serving. Nose exhibited pomegranate, rose petal, red berries, violets and minerals. Palate showed good fruit purity despite being a bit lean, but it had lovely transparency. It could use another 2-3 years before fully revealing its full potential.

Mugneret-Gibourg (Clos Vougeot and Lutenières) (Tøyen, Oslo): Double decanted 3 hours before dinner

The nose had blueberries, slightly balsamic strawberry and some oak infused spiciness.

The palate is just fantastic, so incredible concentration, playful structure with juicy strawberry on top.

As with the Vougeot 2020, this became even better after 24-48 hours, should become even more fun with more bottle age.

Mugneret-Gibourg (Clos Vougeot and Lutenières) (Tøyen, Oslo): Absolutely spectacular nose upon opening.

This changed through the night, after a little while going more towards that 20 vintage primary phase signature, which for me is blackberry, blackcurrant, plums, licorice and burnt sugar.

However, at the very end of the night, this became ever brighter in profile, now going towards raspberry, fresh strawberry, citrus fruits on top of dried heather, baking powder, hawthorn and cedar.

The palate was, from the beginning, red fruited with a dry mouthfeel with cigar box, dried bushes, cedar and a slight bell pepper finish.

At first, this made me a bit sceptic regarding this vintage from Mugneret-Gibourg, it seems like 2020 is so dense and slightly out of character. However, after TWO DAYS, it finally hit its stride! Now, it is unbelievable beautiful, so unfathomable smooth textures, quite reminiscent of Vougeot 2019 and very true to the style I´ve come to expect from Mugneret-Gibourg. This clearly will need SO much time, but that level obtained after 2 days of air, for me, is as good, or maybe even better, than the 2019.

Mugneret-Gibourg (Clos Vougeot and Lutenières) (Tøyen, Oslo): Double decanted 3 h prior to serving

Almost candied strawberry, rhubarb, cloudberry, cut hay on the nose.

So sweet and caressing palate, huge intensity growing through the curve.

Next to the Clos Vougeot 2019, it showed many similarities, perhaps a slightly less obvious nose and a bit more structured and direct palate, not as weightless as Vougeot (then again, what is?).
