Loved it. Deep gold color, almost a bronze. In fact, though it might have turned. Instead this was a decidedly delicious turn into what a well crafted, well stored wine can develop into. Drank almost like a dessert wine. Most incredible taste of blood orange on the finish.

This is a time capsule. 100+ year old un-grafted vines, and winemaking that makes "old school" seem modern. That said, the wines is still bright, fresh, and full of fruit. Seeing it as a 2011 or a 2015 would not have shocked me. The development is textural, with a creamy edge that suits the apple and pear fruit. Just the slightest hint of a smoky note emerges after it's been open for an hour, but who knows after that as the bottle evaporates before the eyes. The vines remain, but the winery is no more. Each remaining bottle is a reminder of the relentless passage of time, and the moments of joy along the journey.

Really delicious even if more Spatlese than Kabinett. There’s good energy but not quite enough for the sweetness.

Wines like this make a strong case for Riesling being the greatest white wine. Intensely fruity, mouth watering, and utterly delicious. The fermenting grapes are cooled to interrupt fermentation at 7.5% alcohol. That residual sugar gives the mouth a creamy texture, and high acidity perfectly balances the sweetness. The low alcohol takes out any sense of alcoholic burn or heat. The wine glides down the mouth and throat, and is so gulpable. At 14 years old, the wine shows zero oxidation and the ability to go on for another 14 years, which is normal for German Auslese.

Opened this as a part of reviewing my 18 year old 2001 German Rieslings. Definite WOW wine. Light amber color. Concentrated, rich, lush, bright, and delicious. So glad I bought a full case of this wine, which, incidentally, was a late release at a give away price of this 2001. Superb with home grown mango from our yard.

Signs of seepage led me to open this. The nose shows candied citrus and some mint. But there's not a lot of aromatic complexity at this stage. The palate and finish are where this really shines though. It's rich and full in the mouth, still sweet but not overly so. It seems a little lower in acidity than I might prefer, though it is still fresh and vibrant. The finish is powerful and expensive, with botrytis-inflected saffron, raisin, and dried apricot. Not sweet enough to pair with true desserts, I would pair with fruit or rich cheese.

Another bottle with slight signs of leakage but showing no signs of premature ageing once opened. This is light and fresh and true to Prädikat, even while showing some ripeness. Impressive length and complexity on the finish, with focus on the mid-palate. This has further positive development in front of it, so long as poor corks don't negatively affect certain bottles.

#13-02, 8% abv. Not quite as bullish on this as Salil was. Kind of sedate, not showing too much of anything, with a bit of creaminess and softness that I'm too keen on. Just doesn't really do it for me.

Slight signs of leakage. Super expressive nose with ripe apple, yellow peach, and vanilla bean. The palate is full and creamy, with zingy acidity riding beneath the fruit. This bottle seems to be in its peak drinking window, although there's a chance this is a little more advanced due to the cork.

Some signs of leakage from the cork. This has become more expressive since my last bottle. Juicy yellow peach fruit and lime zest on the nose. This was a riper profile than is typical for this vineyard, but it was delightful. Rich and relaxed on the palate, but with a pronounced acidic zing running through the middle palate, leading into a lingering finish. This seems to have come into peak form at this point. It's not an exceptionally complex wine, but it's drinking great at the moment.

Vivid flowers, mint, maybe dill, sweet yellow plums, Golden Delicious apples, minerals, dried ginger, hint of orange peel. On the dense and sweet side of Spätlese. Pineapple in the lovely long and intense aftertaste. Just a little aggressive, more "hearty" than "ethereal"--I wonder if this might benefit from a few more years of age? But really enormous fun as it is right now.

NOSE: typical MSR; developing aged character; moderate petrol.

BODY: med.-rich golden yellow color; full bodied; bottle was a leaker.

TASTE: moderately aged character; 9.5% alc. not noticeable; medium+ acidity; light for an Auslese, but certainly not lacking flavor; possibly a touch of botrytis (if not merely a spicy aged note); hints of incense, wet wool, raspberry(!), and yams. Aging nicely, and drinking well now, but can continue to rest in the cellar if one prefers fully mature sweet Riesling. Gut impression score: low 90s.

Yellow pears and yellow apples with a hint of lemon. There’s a nice acidic streak but it’s somewhat hidden by the dense fruit. Slightly ripe for the pradikat. Still drinks fairly young. Pleasurable now, better in 5 years, will last another 15-20.

In my cellar from 2014. Had pulled this for another dinner and wound up leaving in the fridge a month ago. Charlotte made a roasted pork loin and potatoes...seemed a good time to open this one. Chilled, PnP, drank over 45 minutes

Medium gold/brass color. Nose showing white flower, saline, mild petrol. Deep and expressive palate of baked apple, apricot, marmalade. Persists through the mid-palate adding honey and mineral. Medium/full body (Riesling scale...), long finish.

This was incredible showing on this evening. Wasn't sure what to expect, my first experience with this vintner. A real wow wine, old school Riesling, layered and nuanced, incredible energy and depth at 20 years in. Probably could go another 20+? This is an example of why it pays to age Rieslings. Sadly, my only bottle...may be looking for more...:)

PS - I paid $45 for this bottle at auction in 2014...insane QPR

Medium gold. This bottle was not as good as my last one. Sort of indistinct aromatically and likewise nondescript on the palate. Possibly very slightly corked. Nothing obviously wrong, but this bottle was just not very interesting.

Dark gold. Medium+ body. Very sweet on the nose with relatively strong rose & rose water floral notes. High RS permeates through the mid- and finish. Botrytis notes throughout. Has a streak of minerality to counter the sweetness. Great wine!

Bruno Schmitt’s last vintage in the cellar, Very floral with yellow field flowers, Apple and wet slate, Dense palate with Wall of Sappy Apple, Balanced with well-integrated acidity, there are notes of neutral wood/fuder oak coming through on the back end. Reminds me of Von Othegraven’s style. Purchased as direct import upon release, stored accordingly and enjoyed 40-50 on its own... Na zdrowie

Different cork material than recent '04s and '05s, and no signs of leakage at all. Color is medium straw moving towards light gold. The nose is immediately very expressive and shows a fine combination of youthful yellow apple fruit and herbs, along with some notes of early maturity in its suggestion of currant jelly. The palate is likewise shows youthful with a medium-full sense of citrus fruit and mint, few signs of age, and a zingy refreshing acidic streak. This wine is in a good place right now and looks on course to develop very well with more cellar time.

Cork had very slight signs of seepage. Color is medium gold. Nose has aromas of ripe tangerine and currant and a hint of aged Riesling/petrol. The palate is light to medium bodied and fresh, in keeping with the Prädikat, with a sense of rounded fruit and creamy texture, plus some vintage-appropriate pithy acidity creeping from beneath. Flavors lean towards tangy mango. This isn't a particularly complex bottle and is perhaps a little muddled in its expression. Enjoyable but not especially impressive. My last bottle, but if I had more and more confidence in the cork, I'd give it 5 more years in the cellar and see if it pushes through to its next stage of development.

Cork showed slight signs of past leakage, but the ullage was fine, and the wine seemed sound. Medium gold color. The nose is initially very reticent, especially at fridge temp. It became more expressive as it warmed, but was still fairly restrained. Notes of lime zest, candied citrus. Pleasant, but not a lot of complexity. The palate has relaxed with age into the harmonious creaminess of adolescent Rieslings, with a hint of zingy acidity buoying the mouthfeel. There's moderate sweetness and flavors of candied strawberry and herbs, and good persistence on the mid-palate. While I enjoyed this, I had hoped it would be a little more delineated and a little more expressive. Maybe a few more years will see additional complexity emerge. It did hold over three days re-corked in the fridge with hardly any change, so it's certainly got plenty of life left.

All my '05s seem to have varying degrees of leakage problems. This one looked the worst, so I opened it first. The wine seemed sound from an oxidation perspective. But it was also corked! Out if the frying pan and into the fire.
