Drinking Some Great Mugnier as an Hommage to Becky Wasserman (Republique - Los Angeles CA): In 99/01/02/05 vertical, preceded by the same vintages of Amoureuses. Riper, more spiced and more fleshy vs 2001, but with less power or finesse. This also starts out as a charming wine with that weightlessness that thrills me in the best Chambolle and Mugnier wines, while then popping in its long finish. A slight fraction behind the 2001 for me tonight.

Nice ripe red cherry fruit. Super smooth. This is all about the fruit and while it is not the most complex Mugnier Musigny it is really enjoyable right now.

Ruby colour with light rim. Pure red berry and floral notes, fine and deep. Red cherry, cherry stone sour zest, a distinctive salty streak. Mineral spice across the full length. Lightly damson. Very refined but still intense, good acidity and great length. Has years ahead of it. Superb.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Stunning aromas with so much bright red fruit with floral and spice in perfect proportion. Impressive concentration in the style of the greatest of Musigny, with both the iron fist and velvet glove easily found. Gorgeous right now. Served just after the 1999, this wine was more pleasurable today, but the 1999 might have longer legs.

Drank at a dinner at Eleven Madison last night. Beautiful, pale color almost translucent. The somm decanted the wine before serving and we let it set for an hour. The nose was reticent at first but it started opening up after an hour or so. Even then though, compared to most Musigny's the nose was very restrained, not classic in the Musigny style. This is an elegant beautiful wine. Nice long finish imparted by the underlying structure of soft Chambolle tannins.

I think what impresses me so much about all the Mugnier Musignys from 2000 on is how true they are to the vintage. These wines all reflect the unique terroir of the Musigny site, and they all express the best qualities of the vintage that produced them. We opened one bottle of this to start the night and opened a bonus bottle at the end of the night as a surprise. The second bottle was decanted for a few hours before serving as opposed to the first one that was poured right away. It was a close second overall for the wine of the night. It showed sweet red fruit notes on the nose, beautiful roundness and depth of flavor, and above all elegance.

Mugnier Musigny Dinner (Blue Hill (NYC)): Compared to the nose on the ‘01, which is booming, this is initially quiet but still has elegant florals and red cherry. Elegant and seductive and opens more with a little time. On the palate this is round and soft and surprisingly approachable. Elegant and delicious. Curve ball: second bottle at the end of dinner with five hours of decanting and this is absolutely gorgeous as well. The nose remains more or less the same, great, but the palate is further integrated and has developed coffee tone in addition to the cool red and blue berry fruit. Beautiful.

Party at My Place: This is interesting because it is extremely youthful, even infantile, but it is also totally accessible and soft. Red berry delicious baby fat on the nose. Palate is ripe and round with with a nice depth and richness. Huge aromatics if a little primary on the palate. This was totally comparable to an '01 in February, but with less development on it.

Special Easter lunch (Restaurant Schwarzwaldstube ***, Baiersbronn, Germany): Mugniers Musigny was always a dream wine for me and I never thought that I can drink it that early in my life. Thanks to my patronizingly friends. The wine showed everything I hoped for. Such a complex, packed but also wonderful elegant nose with lots of wet stone, mineral, earthy notes mixed with red fruit, violets and bit of sage. On the palate this Musigny shows everything Burgundy is famous for: Power without weight in every sense of the word. Cool, elegant, nearly transparent but with tension through the roof and a long, long finish. A wine for my personal books. Just wow.

Theme: Musigny Grand Cru 13% Slightly light rim with vibrant ruby core. Deep, forest floor, violet, savoury, blue fruits and Hoisin sauce. Ethereal, layers, Hedonism. Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago - Burgs, old Bordeauxs and SQNs (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Served blind I am totally convince that this is the 07 as the wine is lean, soft and floral. Round and pretty nose displaying cherry, fresh strawberry, stem, mineral and earth. Medium concentration, soft, warm, good mineral presence, medium acidity a medium to long finish. Medium ruby. Expressive nose of cherries with cloves, rose petals and a touch of earth, real greatness visible immediately. enters the palate medium- bodied with an elegant but dense structure of fruit, astringency and aromatics. A wonderful combo of all components leaving every Burg lover meditating... Too bad that these kind of wines are now both unaffordable and hard to find.

Barely given any air before serving. Ripe red and black berries with some emerging earthiness, lots of power. Needs plenty more cellar time and/or decanter time, but certainly has the concentration to become a great wine. The 2002 Amoureuses also served tonight was far more forthcoming.

At Mugnier Musigny vertical. Darker color than 2000 or 2001. Nose beautiful complex of strawberry, cherry and rose all gently extracted. Touches of spice, honey and citrus with limestone. Palate more weighty than others tonight with real finesse and length - the true peacock's tail effect. A great wine with years of evolution ahead.

This is still mostly primary fruit but wow, such lovely fruit! The nose and the palate are picture perfect Musigny with their chiseled minerality, silky and lush black fruits showing an overlay of ripe strawberry and bing cherry. This is very solid and can be approached now with pleasure but will surely improve with some more time. This openness is rather classic for the 2002 vintage, as is the one criticism you can make of this, that being the weight is more of a middleweight, the density is not incredible – but who cares?

The Greatest Pig Roast Ever?? (Chicagoland): Firm dark red cherries and raspberry with mineral on the nose. The palate was not very giving right now; some dark fruits and spice, but a firm backbone of minerality. Gripping tannin. Long finish. Great potential here.

WGS: Mugnier (Hilton Hotel Singapore): Pretty elegant, and budding with florals in its early stages. Everything is harmonious and in tune. All nicely done with a touch of minerality that circles inside the mouth . This has that magical transcending effect like the 02 Le Amourouse. The same etheraeally sweet heavenly fruit come through again but this time with a touch of bitter roots. Excellent well balanced but also seems more unready than the Les Amourouses. Again hard to rate now and more time should be given to slowly wait for this to completely come out of its shell.

Domaine JF Mugnier Tasting (Hilton Hotel, Singapore): In one word - Incredible. Like all the very best wines I have ever had, this almost belies description. The nose on the wine was just traffic stopping. Earthy scents and whiffs of mushroomy umami were melded together with crushed flowers, some boiled herbs, hints of spice and deep, deep reservoirs of fruit - blueberries, cherries and cranberries - all in a seamless, integrated and just about inexorable flow of smells from the little glass that we had. A "once in a lifetime nose" I wrote. Freddy Mugnier said that the best Musignies beggar description on the palate. This was certainly true of this wine. The flavours were so deep, so profound, so seamlessly meshed together, that it was almost monolithic in the way it moved powerfully across the palate. I got some sweet, ripe and unbelievably pure red and blue fruits, a touch of caramel at the edges, fresh acidity, maybe some minerally earth, some spice - yet beyond a point, it was just impossible to describe. There was just incredible depth, incredible complexity - all wrapped in in a beautifully smooth, velvety, almost silky texture and wonderfully balanced with that lively acidity. Finish was epic. Deep, inexorable, and seemingly going on forever - a beam of flavour that filled the mouth, so multifacted that it was hard to plump its depth. This wine was a seamless display of power wed to elegance. It left me speechless.

Supremely primary showing compote of summer berries dusted with icing sugar on the nose. The fruits were definitely of the red persuasion although with air notes of anise and licorice popped up. Great shape in the mouth with a rigid mineral spine and the most inviting lacy texture. It is a feminine wine but there’s plenty of muscle and one suspects this will be great in 10-15 years time.

Wines With Dinner (The Wine Summit At Lake Louise): Dark, rich ruby colour – also showing some fullness on swirling; aromas are huge – running through and showing more ample depth – warm, rich black cherry and some hints of ripe strawberries – some smoke and also fresh tree blossoms, and a little hazelnut; round, rich texture; harmonious melding of the tannins and acidity; ripe and sappy cherry fruit, with an edge of sweet oak; also noted some spicy mocha and cashew flavours; pulls all the stops on the finish, where everything seems to reappear. WOW !

Barely given any air before serving. Ripe red and black berries with some emerging earthiness, lots of power. Needs plenty more cellar time and/or decanter time, but certainly has the concentration to become a great wine. The 2002 Amoureuses also served tonight was far more forthcoming.

Les Nomades BYO Dinner (Les Nomades Chicago): Amazingly, this somehow seemed clumsy next to the 2007 Roumier Musigny. More grip, earth and spice. More weight and less finesse. Outstanding red fruit and a bit of mushroom. Long finish with verve.

Red berry fruit has jube lolly like sweetness. It is full, round, sweet and long. It has good concentration and is quite complete.

The nose had plenty of floral perfume and a little gingerbread. It was full, sweet and textural in the mouth with good volume and nice detail.

Super pretty strawberry and rhubarb fruit. Medium bodied, attractive, with a still-firm finish that needs time. Sweet. Fine tannins. Delicious.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Great aromas of wild strawberry with lots of floral charm. Moderate red fruit for now on the palate with really good Asian spice. Lots of elegance and minerality with really impressive textures. This wine will need lots and lots of time to fully evolve to full potential. I don't plan on opening my bottles until 2020 or later.

A beautiful wine that is showing so well right now, but clearly not yet hitting its stride! Delicious but it trades on its elegance over power or density.

Great Wine with a Pig on a Spit (Elmhurst IL): It was late. Popped and poured. Dark fruit, hints of floral character could be coaxed out, but not even much spice. Lots of acids and tannins, in need of lots more time...or a more awake audience.

The Greatest Pig Roast Ever?? (Chicagoland): Firm dark red cherries and raspberry with mineral on the nose. The palate was not very giving right now; some dark fruits and spice, but a firm backbone of minerality. Gripping tannin. Long finish. Great potential here.

Birthday Bash with Pig (Chicagoland): Very young and wrapped up. Dark fruit. Tense. Some spice and hard tannins. More masculine styling. Hard to read right now, and current impression is less enjoyable than the '02 Amoureuses.

Some stem initially on the nose which goes away slowly to express the sweetness of the Cm terroir. Palate shows layers and layers of fruits. The purity and acidity on the palate is just outstanding. This is really one of my best burgundy ever... Truly outstanding

WOW !

Mugnier Dinner (Howard Ripley) (The Ledbury, London): My second fav wine of the night and i think the one with the most potential. it wasnt the darkest wine on the table but it had a great nose of cherries strawberries and black berries with a hint of licorice.and all of that came through as i drank it. it was quite fine but firm and very well balanced...the tanins where all smooth but all there..this wine gave me the feeling it is all still coming together and just going to be great in 6-10 years. cant wait

Tasted at London IMOW 2002 Burgundy event. Surprisingly expressive, with evident dark cherry fruit, a hint of smoke and layers of assorted dark fruits. Primary and a touch tannic on the finish, will wait to see what this is like in 2010.
