Last noted 3/13. First bottle corked; went & grabbed the last bottle.
Color/App: nearly opaque ruby core -> moderately dense ruby rim with a bit of garnet creeping in. The wine was rocking after decanting for about 30 minutes. Black-fruited bouquet showing off tar, creosote, leather, a little gaminess and wet-slate minerality. Palate showed smoke, pretty much any black fruit you can name, anisette and tobacco. Great structure to drink now: the tannins are finally approachable and the acid level seems just right. Well done and has held up nicely. I'd say this is for drinking now over the next 3-5 years.

Tar, bbq meat, smoke and clove notes. The tannins are well resolved, but this still seems younger than dozen or so years of age. Big, muscular and beefy. Seems like this would go great with grilled food.

My last bottle, pours inky purple-black. A big burly wine, full-bodies with a nice floral lift and tannins that are beginning to soften. Smokey black fruit nose with hints of anise and clove. Bigger and bolder than I go for these days but well made if a bit one-dimensional. In a prime drinking window I think.

This surprised me, in a good way. While ripe dark berry fruit is present & there's a touch of vanilla in the midpalate, it's really herbs & a touch of game that is at the forefront of this wine. This was consistent across ~3 hours in the decanter. It is a little broad shouldered, but I think wears the California traits quite well.

This bottle is in a weird place. Seven years after my last bottle, this still has a lot of oak up front and bracing tannins on the back end. After Coravin'ing a glass, the first few sips were very disjointed, but with air this came together a bit. Somewhat reticent herbal nose shows notes of bay leaves, tapenade, sage, eucalyptus, cigar box and black fruits. A bit of stewed fruit on the midpalate suggests this bottle may not be pristine. Will revisit tomorrow.

Dark & meaty with mixed dark berries, bbq, dark florals & pepper. Integrating medium acid/tannins. Drinking well now though has the potential to evolve a few more years and should drink well through its 15th birthday.

Inky. Sweet tannins. Tannins are heavy and wine is structured. This, after a 1 hour decant and 3 hours slow ox. Fruits of boysenberry, mulberry and other blue berries. Seriously tightly would. My only bottle, but I wish I held onto to this. Open in a minimum of 5 years.

Decanted for several hours. I will not rate this wine because of a funky note found in many Pinot Noirs and Syrahs. It's what I term pinotesque in nature with an earthy/brett quality that I have yet to acquire an appreciation. It's a "food wine" for me and cannot be consumed in and of itself.

I think this is really drinking well at the moment, after just about 30 minutes with the cork pulled. At first, there was a lot of smoky, bacon fat aroma and flavor. That's settled down to a nice line of smoke running through silky blackberry and black currant fruit, with a juicy finish. Very nice food wine, and also substantial enough to be had on its own, at the end of a long week, when you just want to unwind.

This wine is at an interesting point, still great black and blue fruit on the palate, but a rather odd, almost musty nose, it did seems to open up and get better with some air, if I had to open this bottle again I would have given it at least an hour decant.

This started a bit slow and felt heavy and tired when popped. Don't be fooled, it takes off within an hour or two. Still a brute of a wine, very dark and imposing, almost a wall in that it imposes but isn't necessarily giving. This meaty/iron/dark/salty/stony black hole also happens to taste of luscious blackberry and black plum skin. It also has a thin veneer of perfume that rides just on the surface. This is still very tannic, has structure and is overall very young. Perhaps I should read my own notes. This needs time to get things into balance. 2018.

Drank with the 2011. Opened about 4 hours earlier. Rich nose with meat and black fruit and spice, same flavor notes in the body with bright acid to balance the still firm tannins. Enjoyed and went well with roasted meats, but will wait another few years on these.

Pnp. Had to check in on one to get a status. Lots of perfume on the nose along with some stewed fruit. Fairly lively on the palate. Cherries, plum, spice, and meat. Tons of grippy tannin. The wine rides on a very meaty background. This is very good wine, but primary. Hold. 91-93

PnP. Fairly primary deep, dark fruits. Juicy rather than thick/lush, but is in the fruit bomb direction. Some meat and spice notes help add interest. Fun to drink.

Roasted meat comes to mind, all most cave man like. Big wine and has legs any guy would chase. Purple and opaque. Not pretentious but a wine to enjoy with some bq. Dark fruits prevail. Enjoy.

Dark, inky purple color, with long legs on the glass. The nose shows black cherries, cassis, and spice notes. The palate is characterized by a core of sweet black fruit, licorice, raw meats, and hints of vanilla. Full bodied, with a nice texture and finish.

Very brooding dark purple color in the glass. Very distinct nose of smoked meat, bacon, and mixed dark fruits. Very savory in nature on the palate as well. Slippery on the palate with forward fruit. Lacks the extra dimension for me though.

Dark purple/ Black to core. Nose is heavy, Dark purple fruit, currant, coal/tar, some meaty components. The fruit come across more on the palate, but this is a deep syrah in the Cote Rotie style, more old world than new world. Really enjoyable on it's own, and very nice smooth finish. Not overly tannic at this point, nice balance. Actually much nicer on 2nd night, so still has plenty of life left in this bottling. could stay in the cellar couple more years.

Dark and inky purple. Showing moderate-plus viscosity and bright reflect
Smokey aromas of charred game meat, tar and lava rock mix with aromas of crushed rock, gun metal, dried and fresh mix of berries, dried herbs of thyme, marjoram and oregano. Ancillary notes of rendered bacon fat, violets, earth and juniper. Muscular palate of dense black fruits, charred meats, dried herbs, lavender, espresso, bramble and earth that combine with moderate-plus acidity, and firm nicely integrated tannins. Dense in the mid palate that pulls through the long finish which is accentuated by the firm acidity and tannins. 90-92 See comment for more info.
The new Bedrock offer is up so I decided to try tasting '09 Griffin's Lair vs. the '10 Hudson TnS Syrah.
Color: opaque inky purple -> dense inky rim. Fantastic nose of blackberry compote, gunflint, minerals, creosote. Palate showed some smokey gaminess, tobacco and blackberries again. Excellent structure (almost stern) and I can see this continuing to develop positively for a long time to come. Delicious and definitely the winner of the cage match vs. Griffins Lair.

This was giving up nothing on night one. Tight. VinVaced for an overnight. Night two brought some blackberry and dark red berry on the nose. Palate is still not delivering its best yet. There are tones but no song.....yet. Again, I believe in MTP. I will stockpile his wines and start enjoying them more and more as the years go by.

A fairly light to medium bodied syrah. I hate to use the cliche "old world", but the elegance of this simply does not reflect the norm for this varietal in California. Nice minerality, a fine backbone- I probably frank this 3-5 years too soon.

Definitely a very young wine at this stage. Lovely deep purple color. Still has a lot of alcohol heat, but that should envelop more with the tannins in time. Smoky, earthy, and gamey, with cherry and red fruit flavors. I will hold onto my other bottles and hope (and I assume it will) it will improve with age.

Didn't take formal notes but it was deep purple in colour, quite a vibrant nose with some black and blue fruit and coffee grounds. Good amount of fruit in the palate but not overdone. Modern style, good structure, nice acidity and finish. Still quite tannic but the mouthfeel is silky. Quite a difference between the 2009 and 2010 vintage but assuming some of the additional fruit in this wine and the fact it is more open for business is not just vintage but the addition of the "S" block to the "T" block from Hudson Vineyard.

Popped and poured, drank over 2 nights. Much better the second night. Really interesting nose of ground coffee and red fruit. Soft mouthfeel. Deep black fruit on the palate with black pepper on the finish. Decant this and you'll be pleased.

Drank alongside a Bernard Faurie St. Joseph, which is at quite the opposite end of the style spectrum, so take my opinion of this wine in that context. Showing a lot of oak on the nose, along with bacon fat and blueberries and flowers. Big but with a nice acid structure and a "Rhone-ish" fruit profile, although clearly with a modern style. Should turn out to be quite nice once the oak integrates a bit.

Followed over two days. Deep purple in color. Black/blue fruit, notes of coffee, iron and anise. Very smooth; tannins well integrated at this stage. Much more reserved than some of Morgan's other cuvees which I quite like stylewise. My biggest issue with this is that I was hoping for more concentration of flavor. Other than that, a really nice wine. This definitely opens up over time so give this a good decant.

No formal notes, popped and poured, very well balanced agree with other notes regarding blue and black fruits. Had this at the same time as the kick ranch, most people liked this wine more than the kick ranch, as it was more fruit forward.

PnP. Dense youthful purple -- viscous; great legs. Quite perfumed with plums, gravel, creosote. In the mouth there was plenty of wild game meat, tobacco, a little coffee. Ripe fruit with good structure leading to a medium long finish that was slightly bitter at the tail end. Lighter on its feet than I was expecting from the nose. Just a baby but already delicious.

Overall, quite a good bottle of wine. This was a pop and pour, run through a venturi. Had this about a month or so after the 2008 kick ranch. Compared to it, this wine was much more gamey with bloody iron and minerality notes. It was also a little leaner with less tannic structure and plushness. Yet, again, as with most of the bedrocks I have had it keeps it all pretty well balanced and has that nice juicy acidity that most all the bedrock syrahs I have had so far possessed. Have yet to have a flabby bedrock! Fruit profile is again blacks and blues. I have one more of these and may wait another year or two to see if it fleshes out a little more.

Popped and poured one glass on Friday night, then had another the next night and finished the rest on Sunday. Relatively consistent at each of the different nights. Very dark fruit of plums and blackberry, along with a slight hint of cedar on the aroma. Despite the very dark fruit, it is rather light on the palate, which is nice. Not sure that this is really going to improve over time, but I'll let my other bottle rest for awhile to see what happens.

On pop and pour, this one featured game, bloody roast beef, blue and black berries and a hint of black cherry on the nose and palate. The finish was laced with spice and pepper with a bit of alcohol peeking through. The gamey, meaty notes subsided on day 2 with sweet black fruit taking center stage. Overall, a very solid syrah.

Bedrock Pickup Day (Sonoma, CA): Big, ripe blackberry nose with some white pepper. Pretty. Medium to full bodied with medium+ acidity. Floral palate, violets, tart black plums. Nice weight and density but also a spine of acidity. The depth and light tannins suggest this will improve with some cellar time. Picked early, 2% Viognier, 40% whole cluster.

Drank with the 2011. Opened about 4 hours earlier. Rich nose with meat and black fruit and spice, same flavor notes in the body with bright acid to balance the still firm tannins. Enjoyed and went well with roasted meats, but will wait another few years on these.

Black cherries and some tar and wild game, good amount of tannin, pop and pour, gets steadily better in the glass

Smoked game and clearly on the savory side of Syrah. The palate never really fleshes out like I would want. Still good balance and character.

Very brooding dark purple color in the glass. Very distinct nose of smoked meat, bacon, and mixed dark fruits. Very savory in nature on the palate as well. Slippery on the palate with forward fruit. Lacks the extra dimension for me though.

Has the potential to be a great wine, but oak is way to strong at this point. Hopefully it will mellow out?

Dark purple/ Black to core. Nose is heavy, Dark purple fruit, currant, coal/tar, some meaty components. The fruit come across more on the palate, but this is a deep syrah in the Cote Rotie style, more old world than new world. Really enjoyable on it's own, and very nice smooth finish. Not overly tannic at this point, nice balance. Actually much nicer on 2nd night, so still has plenty of life left in this bottling. could stay in the cellar couple more years.

Black purple. 2 hr decant. Notes of smoke, road tar, bacon fat, blackberry and black fruits, and a mineral streak. I think this will merit a higher score in a few years.

90-92

Meaty, gamey syrah. Full bodied with ripe fruit flavors that just edge from being over the top. There are a lot of Aussie shiraz producers that could learn from this bottling. Nice QPR

Interesting. A bit young and evolves quite a bit after opening it. Medium bodied and very round. A little musty. Some interesting floral flavors over very dark fruit and leather. Some cassis, pencil lead on the finish.
