  • A very subtle elegant soft wine. Takes about a hour for it to truly open up and show its capabilities. Slight fruit nose. a bouquet of red and black fruit, good acidity, subtle tannins with a wonderful lingering sweetness. This evolves and gets better with each glass. A pleasure to drink.

  • WOOOOW, le vilain petit canard s'est transformé en grand cygne majestueux

  • Magnificent minty aroma, full body, firm tannin, very long, a little astringency soon to fade, you still have to wait 2-3 years. For me, the best 2011 with Latour and VCC. At a still human price.

  • Bordeaux Visits - November 2023: Deep, garnet-ruby color. Dark fruit and savory aromas - black currant, iron, violet, leather and cedar, among others. Refined and elegant on the palate, showing extensive notes of black fruit, black tea, melted stone, licorice, and spice, all very-well integrated. Elegant and expansive mid-palate, finishing with long & fine tannins and very nice length.

  • This was great straight from the bottle. I much prefer lighter vintages and this helps make it more approachable at a relatively young age for Bordeaux. Beautiful black fruits with subtle tannins and a lovely perfume. Absolutely classic claret from of the greatest makers. Had at Dewakan in KL

  • Impossible to hide the excitement of tasting a wine from this legendary Chateau for the first time. I focus and try to convey in words what I found in the glass. The wine is dark, almost impenetrable, and the nose is extremely complex and free from any defects. Woody notes stand out with a beautiful toasting, root licorice, tobacco, and cocoa, while the fruit is dominated by cassis and fully matured dark berries. On the palate, it's seductive, enveloping, and incredibly savory. The tannin is precise and remains soft on the palate, helping to enhance the monstrous persistence of this wine. It changes every 10 minutes and gradually reveals itself in a kaleidoscope of aromas and scents, from floral to sweet spice, and even hints of animalic notes, although never too intrusive. Without any comparisons at this level, I definitely consider it one of the best tastings of my life.

  • Tasting at Château Margaux. Deep dark red. Intense perfumed nose. Blueberries, blackcurrent, licorice, cedar, cigar box, coffee, violets. Multi-layered complexity. Soft tannins and firm acidity. Very long finish. Absolute elegance. Uncorked 4hr. 86% Cab Sauv, 10% Merlot, 2% Cab Franc, 2% Petit Verdot.

  • Very finely-textured but rather lean with limited generosity. It's Margaux for sure but a vintage to pass on. Tasted at the Chateau.

  • Pronounced nose intensity with notes of flora, violet, black currant, spices, toast. High tannin and medium+ acidity. Full bodied and long finish.

  • Tasted at Chateau. Deep red purple. Nose quite expressive with red and blue fruit. Palate approachable with layers of cherry and blueberry. Hallmark elegance, yet complex with fine tannin and a medium long finish. No green notes. The elegance and refinement of Margaux but lacking the concentration and power of a great year.

  • Deep and concentrated ruby in the glass and deep and concentrated on the nose too. Loads of raspberry, boysenberry, and blackcurrant fruit, with leather, smoke, and charred wood notes. It is so silky smooth in the mouth - the tannins are gentle and caressing, the complexity unfolding over minutes on the palate. It is aristocratic in that Margaux way, revealing new aromas with every sip.

    Pure elegance.

  • Bordeaux 2011 - 10 Years On - 30 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. A few observations: 1) As expected, it's a mediocre vintage with many wines lacking depth and mid palate weight of great vintages. My average score for the reds was 91.3 pts vs group scores at more recent horizontals for 2010 (93.0), 2000 (92.7) and 2009 (93.9). 2) I expected more green/unripe notes and drying tannins but that is not the case (hence the solid 91.3 average). Most wines showed well-made (with only 6 out of 30 reds rated below 90 pts). 3) Left bank (average 91.8 pts) clearly trumps right bank (90.6) thanks to more mid palate substance. 4) Virtually no wine showed a) over extracted and already dying and b) with far too much ripeness. Both 2009/2010 (and 2015/2018) have several wines with these problem. 5) Most wines are in a good drinking window. Although not yet with tertiary complexity, the structure has softened and the wines are open (even without extended decanting). 6) Unfortunately (due to price), the best reds were Le Pin (97+ pts), Margaux (96), Petrus (96) and Mouton (95). 7) Good vintage for Sauternes it seems (we tasted only two) with a surprising Giraud (96 pts) beating a too sweet Yquem (93).

TN: Nicely expressive nose with fine red, dark red, dark and blue berries, floral aromas and coffee and luxurious oak aromas. Superb nose. Same is true for the palate with such a blast of fresh red currant, some darker berries, floral aromas, minerality, some tobacco. Nicely complex, superb precision, good attack, mid palate weight and quite long finish. The complete package and I love the freshness and lightness here. This bottle showed clearly better than a bottle 18 months ago (rated 90). Easily worth 95-96 pts.

  • It was a special wine for Lucas at his special day. We double decanted it an hour before serving. A typical floral aroma for Ch. Margaux but not as forward as other hot vintages, silky palate with elegant texture and long after taste.

  • DONT BUY IT! You can get a 2009 Pontet Canet or Pape Clement for half the price and they are great wines.
I could taste fruit but with bitter after taste. I think if I paid $20 (not a typo) I would still be upset about it. Enough said

  • Château Margaux Vertical 2003-2015: All wines tasted blind alongside the matching vintage of Sassicaia (see separate tasting story). The quality of the Margauxs transcends through the vintages with exceptional complexity and precision and a soft- and roundness not many left bank wines show that young. Many off-vintages delivered great pleasure (06, 08, 12) but of course the best wines were from the top vintages. Winner again was the 2009 (already won in a top 50 wines from 2009 retrospective last June) thanks to an unbelievable depth and sexiness. The 2015 (hyper pure and singular) and the 2010 (the definition of finesse) are just a tad behind, with the 2005 (like so many 2005s) showing promising but not ready. Average score for the Margauxs at very high 94.8 points (clearly higher than the 92.1 for the Sassicaias, which - no surprise - only beat Margaux in the very weak Bordeaux vintages 2011/2013).

TN: This was the weakest wine of all the 13 vintages. While the nose still displayed seductive Margaux characteristics with pure fruit, some floral hints and the burnt sugar/coffee notes, the palate was light, hollow and the wine short. Totally unspectacular and nothing to remember.

  • Margaux vs Sassicaia double vertical: Sassicaia vs Margaux face-off hosted by a private collector. I was surprised by the unambiguousness of the result in this 13- year (2003-2015) double vertical. Margaux beats Sassicaia 10x with Sassicaia on top only 3x. Of the 26 wines tasted, the top 6 (all scored 95 and higher) were all Margaux with 2009, 2010 and 2015 all somewhere between regal and galactic. In sum, the average score for Margaux was 94.4 (range 92-98) as compared to a Sassicaia average of 93.1 (range 92-94). See tasting story for a few more high level remarks.

Black coffee, roasted coffee beans and a red bright fruit core. Added spices and herbs. Good balance. Appears very young, but added spices and herbs. and delicacy. Not ideal balance on the palate, but fruity.

  • Reasonably priced glass at a restaurant. Poured and let sit then drank over 1+ hour. Underwhelming. Black fruit and slate aromas. Medium body, a bit broken down for its age, in my opinion. Dark red fruits of plum and cherry, licorice. A pleasant wine to drink for sure but only worth about 1/4-1/2 of its price point for my tastes..

  • Drank at restaurant with friends. Deep, dark, confident. Strong tannins, needed decanting, but wonderful.

  • Château Margaux vertical dinner (Taberna Del Alabardero): The structure here is certainly looser, when compared to the 2010. This is not really doing it for me and came across as the weakest of all the Margaux we enjoyed over dinner: the 1978 had more personality. Maybe I am being too hard on the wine, but the tannins were at once a bit rigid and kind of boring. Furthermore, optimal ripeness seems to be lacking. In any case, it is a wine made with great attention and coming from great terroir, so perhaps I underrate it. Perhaps with more time in bottle, it will get much better, but for my palate at this stage, I am not a huge fan of the 2011.

  • Chateau Margaux dinner with Thibault Pontallier (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Medium expressive nose displaying subtle blue and black fruit, anise, ink and limestone mineral. Medium concentration, subtle cassis driven palate impression, medium acidity and mineral, fine tannins and a medium long cassis and ink driven finish. The mid is slightly hollow. Very well crafted wine that can be already enjoyed but will improve for another decade or two. The weakest wine of the evening.

  • Deep garnet red, no bricking on the edges. Layered nose with a touch of brett, bright cherries, perfume and forest floor. Heavy tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Smooth and elegant attack with perfumed notes, crushed gravel and dried cherries. Excellent backbone and dry, long finish. Drink till 2032.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon largely dominates with 86% of the blend. This year it is uncommonly strong, vigorous and fortunately balanced with lots of smoothness. Then comes the Merlot (10%), the Petit Verdot (2%) and the Cabernet Franc (2%). Chateau Margaux 2011 is the most concentrated wine they have ever produced. And yet, one will barely notice its tannins.

  • Medium+ intensity aromas of walnut, black currants, dark cherries, coffee, vanilla, cedar and hints of green bell pepper, clove and toasty notes.

It is dry in the mouth with a medium+ acidity. It has velvety fine-grained tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium+ body and pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is very long.

It is an outstanding quality wine. It is lingering with a remarkable fruit concentration balanced by a refreshing acidity. It shows complexity provided by oak ageing and some fresh spicy and green notes.

  • The Institute of Masters of Wine Annual Bordeaux Tasting - 2011 Vintage (Vintners Hall, London): Essence of effortless balance here. Lovely wine, good fruit, good tannin, no sharp edges and green notes. Could have been a bit more vibrant but overall very nice and dare say delicious even at this stage.

  • Tasted 4/2/2012....Perhaps the the First Growth of the vintage...? I liked the elegance and purity of this Marguax, very fine balance with plenty of substance. Very Floral with much class. One should be able to drink this one early , yet has the good to evolve for a couple of decades. This should prove a fine counter part to compare with the excellent 2012 over the next decade or two.
    Beauty.

  • Blending 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, along with equal parts Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the wine is ruby in color. With delicate, complicated scents of violets, mocha, smoke, truffle, blackberry, cassis and an array of spices, the wine is soft, refined and elegant. It’s lacking the volume and darker berries found in the 2010 or 2009. Yet this is a very suave, fresh, pure, cassis-filled Margaux. 94-95 Pts

  • 2012 Bordeaux Trip; 4/1/2012-4/4/2012 (Bordeaux, France): 38% of production, CS 86%, M 10%, PV 2%, CF 2%. Much tighter than the Pavion Rouge as the nose was only giving the faintest hint of cherry and toast. The palate was massively concentrated and very tannic, with very fine polished tannins. Fruit is incredibly pure and focused, with a striking red component and showing impressive depth. Long finish already. This was very impressive and will likely last at least a couple decades given the immense tannins. Good enough my wife asked for a bottle and didn't seem to care about the cost. 92-96

  • GJE CRD 2008 and EP 2011; 3/29/2012-4/4/2012 (Bordeaux, France): The impression is soft and gentle, cassis, rose and flowers. Certainly less weight than the 10 but nicely balanced and pretty. There is a bitter note at the end and noticeable tannins.
