2nd of 12, opened 2 hours, perfect cork and level, much nicer, more nuanced and showing more grenache than first bottle last May helping to bring flavours into better balance, youthful colour and drive to fruit, carries alcoholic heft well, upside, 10+ years. F+ (18)......beginning to show the quality I associate with Mordoree's CdP Reine des Bois.

Chez Dalluge does Momofuko w/ Champagne, Whites, & Reine des Bois Vertical (Chez Dalluge, MN): Very dark red color. 7mm transition to clear. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. In a flight of '04, '05, and '06. The '04 was the clear winner here and probably took the nod over the '98 in the full vertical we did. Nice cherry notes, black cherry, savory, lots of leather and earth, garrigue, onion skin, medium full bodied, still a touch of hold on the tannins. The '05 is quite dense and ripe, dark fruit, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, full bodied, plum, heavily spiced, some grip here too. The '06 is also pretty darn big, ripe, creamy texture, rich and sappy, but sharper on the back end and a little tougher overall.

1st of 12, opened an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, dense glossy ruby, surprisingly youthful robe, leggy; sweaty saddle, plum, earth, garrigue, herby rather than spicey at this stage, complexity yet to develop; full, decent length and persistence, a concentrated wine with a sweetish core, not quite come together and lacking acidic lift, clear upside 10 years. At least F (17.5).......it'll be interesting to see whether grenache flavours start to emerge as they would help bring balance to this overwhelmingly and aggressive mourvedre profile, and not quite up to Mordoree's usual very high standard at this stage, eg 01 and 03!

Bought off of last bottle. Not sure if the bottle was flawed as it has a very medicinal smell, and super funky. Calmed down after a while and the nose was a funky truffle. Palate was mushroom and olive and earth. No fruit at all.

Double blind tasting. Brief note. Nose and palate showed very savory here with soy sauce, porcini powder, miso paste, seaweed and earthy red cherry with a hint of vanilla on the backend. Very chewy midpalate showed more of the red fruit sweetness with the finish coming back to the savory side. I quite enjoyed this with mushroom pasta as it was very different and intriguing.

(at Petit Louis – Baltimore) A different animal altogether after the VT and Pegau 04’s from the last week or so. Lots of fruit and a creamy texture - weighty. I have liked other vintages of this wine better (’01, ’00, ’99 for example). Nice bottle that is drinking at peak form, but I don’t particularly like the model this year. (90)

Popped and poured. This is a dark, constant purple-colored wine that is rich, dark, and teeth-staining. There is some moderate sediment, particularly toward the end of the bottle. On the nose, this wine is spicy and earthy, with a focused beam of blackberry crush. In the mouth, there is plum, rich fruits, and a slight bit of tannin. The finish sails on with some lingering sweetness. Overall, this is a ripe, rich, and very good example of CdP, particularly for the vintage. The Reine des Bois CdP is almost always a wonderful wine. This one gets 93 points. Drink now and enjoy.

Deep-, Black-ruby, crimson edge, touch cloudy. Aromas of black pepper, freshly cut plums, ripe black cherries, warm baked fruits, scrub, heather, dried herb, some molasses with a noted alcohol vapour character. The palate reflects the nose and holds a medium to low acid, quite grippy texture (almost like chewing black cherry skins) with a syrup edge that yields a smoother mid-palate than expected. Bags of ground pepper, black cherry and lavender leading to a smooth finish with sandy tannins. As it opens further reveals more tertiary expressions with leather, medicinal, black olive, tar, molasses and hints of yeast extract. This is a typical warm sultry wine whereby the high 15% alcohol adds a mouthfeel from the glycerol and reminds one of a warm southern rhone day. It has complexity with layers of fruits against the classic Grenache element of iron oxide/ferruginous. Impressive CNP.

Has not budged much since my last note. Rich, fairly ripe, still some crunchy tannins, not much finesse. However, I get the impression this wine is not going anywhere. It actually lacks acidity/freshness to get any better. Sure, the tannins will melt further, but the overall impression is of a slightly tired, somewhat "cooked" wine (bought "en primeur", and it is not my cellar that is to blame). So, IMHO, best to drink up now or the next 2 years.

Once again I am faced with a bottle of wine that is 15 percent alc., and yet it is probably the last thing I noticed. On the palette there are no signs of fatigue, the tannins are smooth but present. I'm still not sure whether I'm a firm believer in Domaine de la Mordorée wine making style. Mind you, I have plenty of them in my cellar, in many vintages. And I've been to the domaine many times, tasted from barrel, and in their youth these wines are amazing - overwhelming complex fruit. But I think they might work their tannins too hard. Is it overextraction? Extended maceration? Too much oak dose? I don't know. At a timepoint where most 2004s are drinking beautifully, this wine has a pretty rough edge of tannins that do not seem to budge. Although the wine in itself is very well made, nice (but not overly so) aromatics, good intensity and length, but the roughness is troublesome. And honestly, this is a note I could write regarding many if not most of the Mordorée vintages. Or am I impatient? Time will literally tell.

Extraordinarily young appearance - purple/garnet color. On the nose: sweet blackberry, anise, maybe forest floor. On the palate: raspberry, blackberry, some astringent tannins at first that later smoothed out. A very good Chateauneuf-du-Pape that was drunk too young, but has lots of promise.
