Clear medium ruby; clean medium plus nose of barnyard, dust, leather, blackberry and black cherry opened up to reveal fall cracked leaves and charred meat; dry: high acidity: medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; pronounced flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of coffee and cocoa; long, long finish; drink now or in 10 years; initially popped and poured and wine was tight; a one hour decant opened it up beautifully

Magnum. Wasn't sure what to expect here... but I really liked it. It's a big, unsubtle wine (Matt Walls says it's overextracted) that happens to smell and taste very nice. Lots of violet and dark fruit pastille, youthful in flavour profile but smooth in structure; probably a bit too plush and Napaesque rather than classical or complex but I can look past that on this occasion.

(100% Syrah, 14% Alkohol) Rubinrot, aufgehellter Rand. Expressiv, feinduftig, florale Noten, Leder, Tee, Gewürze, subtil Holz.

This wine was lovely. It seems comparing notes that some of these are ready and some need a bit more time. This had an almost cabernet-esq fruit character with very little of the overwhelming briar fruit note of some syrah without going fully to meat and olive. Definently a fan. 94+

Matter of Taste Zurich, Grand Walkaround Tour. The aroma profile has broad base of earthy, spice, mushrooms and herbs. On top a nice and precise dark fruit and just a bit of meat. A polished palate, but still a bit rough on the texture and drying tannin that need integration.

As others have pointed out, this wine requires at least 1-2 hours in the decanter for it to begin to unwind. Displays a deep ruby color with slight garnet edges; full bodied. Highly aromatic nose and a deeply layered palate: purple flowers, Asian spices, mixed herbs, charred forest floor, grilled meat, black olive, blueberry, black raspberry, black cherry, black plum, and black licorice. Structural components are in development, but showing balance: oak lingers, tannins still slightly grainy, and acidity lurks in the background. Finishes long, and strong.Perfect with the grilled, medium rare ribeye with mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. Just starting to enter into the prime drinking window, but has years of evolution in front of it. Drink through 2032+. An outstanding wine.

30 min decant then drank overc90 minutes and it kept getting better and better. Beautiful nose of sweet red fruits. Great mouthfeel and long finish. Everyone loved this. Very good now but probably could use a few more years in the cellar. Red fruits and spice. Very nice wine. 94-95

Manly, spicy palate, it shakes my Burgundy palate a bit. The juice is dense with a rather surprising mixture of plum and mushroom, it remains digestible and well balanced on a finish that I would describe as “forest” and a good length.
Little experience on the Rhone, not sure if it's my style but it's still done well.

In a perfect drinking window. Nose is plush with leather, spice, velvet, forest floor, mushroom. Palate is superb. Very long. Fresh. Lively fruit with hints of green bell pepper, which I love, maybe some don’t...
Love this wine. Still has years to go, but hard to resist now. Have had the ‘06 as well, and was not impressed. The ‘11 is a different story.

My bottle of choice for a northern Rhône themed tasting.
Knowing this is young for La Chapelle, I double decanted this for a little over two hours before my first sip. Talk about a brick wall. Both aromatically and on the palate, this was not giving at all. At the three hour mark, clove, licorice and all spice showed up on the nose alongside tart rhubarb and a sanguine character on the palate. Both sadly (and thankfully), at hour five in the decanter, this was like a boxer who had been lulling me to sleep with body shots and then suddenly started taking hook shots to the face. Hello! This really flexed its muscles when paired with bolognese. The wine gained a floral/violet/potpourri nose with a touch of black pepper and herbs de Provence. The weight and density bulked up and it channeled a touch of meat and pepper, tar, black cherries and underripe blackberries. Acidity was energetic throughout the evening and the tannins increased by the last glass.
If opening now, I’d decant at least 4+hrs, or hold off another 5-7yrs.

Surprise, surprise. Whoah, did this throw me off. I had opened a bottle of 2006 La Chapelle a few months back and was really disappointed, but this was absolutely shining. I double decanted, then let it sit open without the cork for a good 1.5 hours before pouring a glass. Smooth tannins, rich dark fruits, and great finesse. I really enjoyed this.

Served blind. Not the best showing. It was hard to call Syrah here. Plenty of heat and structure, rustic on the tongue but smoothed out overall. Eventually, the bacon fat took to the fore, but the polished black fruit notes and high acid levels took me to Italy, even though it didn't quite fit any of the usual candidates. In hindsight, I missed the Northern Rhone elements, but it showed so much heat and acidity, I'm not sure I could have got this.

Overall a bit boring, but a balanced and drinkable wine. Reticent nose of slightly sweet dark red fruit. On the palette, I got density with shy red fruit, a wooded overtone (but without the oaky vanilla, more wood and wood smoke). Mildly tart cranberry on the finish helped bring a little energy; I am normally tart sensitive but in this case it helped bring a little balance to the wine. A boring 92-93, but to more fair.. young with time to open.

Opened, but not decanted at a NYC restaurant. Part of a 3 Syrah night. We had in order, 2009 Tenimenti d'Alssandro Cortona Podre Migliara, 2013 Avennia Arnaut Boushey, and the 2011 Paul Jaboulet Aine La Chapelle.
Oddly, the least favorite of the 3, somehow not as impressive as a bottle I had in February. Muted fruit and a short finish, in comparison to the Avennia hurt the impression of this wine.

Purchased this while waiting for my 2010's to mature. Popped n' poured at the Palm Tribeca, without a decant. This went toe to toe with the 2012 Realm The Bard. It was hard to say which I liked better. Visit to Paul Jaboulet Aine Cellar Door and Restaurant (Tain l'Hermitage): Deep garnet. Pronounced aromas - bramble, prune, cassis, black pepper, liquorice, vanilla, smoke, still very youthful. Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium (+) very ripe tannins, medium (+) alcohol, full body, silly, long finish. Very good indeed, but still far too young. Needs time to show what it is capable of.

2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): With a highly perfumed nose of lavender, red currants, Asian spices and tobacco, this deep ruby Syrah grabs one's attention from the get-go. It is full-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic and firmly tannic. Red fruit, tobacco, earth and ganache flavors persist nicely through the mid-palate. Concluding long but with some tannic grip, this iteration of La Chapelle will require some time in the cellar. Drink 2020-2035.
