A great family favourite this wine opened consistent with previous bottles with a pale golden colour and a nose of white peaches, red cherries, lemonade fruit, lime zest and slate. The palate is zesty with a fine line of fruits leading into a citrus inflected and mineral finish that persists beautifully. That feather light ballerina poise remains a defining feature of these wines.

Pop and pore. Classic Prum and a delicious bottle. Zippy acids, stone fruit, saline, minerals. Really strutting it's stuff right now and not sure it will shut down anytime soon. Outstanding bottle.
This was a stunning wine in its youth and ten years on it is ready to drink (at the start of a long evolution). Peach, cream leading to a luxurious and rich palate. Tending Auslese but not cloying. Superb.

This is a beautiful wine with a nose of white and yellow peach, red cherry, lime and lemonade fruits and touches of wet slate. The palate is finely balanced with lovely complex fruit characters expanding in the mouth and leading to a fine persistent finish of acid and mineral characters. Delicious and feather light !

Prior bottle was nearly 3 years and nine months ago and my notes were actually very consistent, showing how long-lived this wine will be. White/yellow peach along with strong mango and pineapple on the nose, along with slate/mineral qualities. Medium bodied with white peach and lightly tart white/nearly green melon upfront. Mid-body has opened up ever so slightly since my last bottle with white peach and some hints of yellow peach, mango and pineapple. The tropical notes start to come in through the mid-body, are shut down to an extent by the acidity, but then burn through and gain expression towards the back. The combination of tart notes and acidity with these tropical notes makes for a very pretty mid-body. Citrus notes and acidity on the backside and then white orchard and white tropical notes along white mineral qualities through the finish. As the wine warmed and opened up, it showed more and more complexity. This wine has a lot of years in front of it and I'll certainly be looking for more.

This wine was initially quite closed with a pale green gold colour. As it warmed and sat in the glass it opened to reveal a nose of white and yellow peach, red cherry, lime and lemonade fruits and touches of wet slate. Some slight seepage on this bottle. Not as enthralled by it as I expected but still a great wine. Harmoniously balanced with a hint of spritz. Petrol, rubber, lime, peach, sherbet, minerality. Well balanced but lacked some length.

Pretty much immortal after opening and being forgotten in the fridge for a month at 1/3 level. As others have noted, botrytis and tropical fruit, with pineapple dominant at this point. Lovely golden straw color. Quite lush for a Spätlese, really a dessert wine for my taste. Rating reserved for a fresher bottle.

Golden straw. Suggestions of ripe and slightly viscous orchard fruit supported by decent acidity — giving it pleasant tension. Highly enjoyable, mostly as an aperitif, over four nights.

This wine has a pale colour and some residual sparkle. The nose is inviting with plenty of lime, passionfruit, white cherry and a touch of honey. The palate is vigorous and flavoursome although it just falls away a little on the finish needing a little more grip. Delicious accompaniment to Japanese food tonight.

Cork soaked through with some seepage. Also a bit of a spritz in the wine. Nevertheless, these issues did not impact the wine, which showed a rounded notes of ripe peaches, a touch of honey, mineral and a whiff of petrol. Very nice.

Just spot on if you want a Spat on the richer side - lots of peach and passion fruit and a bit of spice on the nose, tremendous energy and a mouthful of zingy flavour. Subtle notes of rosewater and less subtle notes of lime marmalade. Really mouthwatering.

Annual Summer wine event featuring Brisket (Steve and Jennie's): A small pour at a tasting. This is consistent for the producer and this bottling. It seemed fusely. The acid and sweetness have great balance. The ripe golden fruit is very showy right now. If you like them young, there is no reason not to drink this now.

Peach, mango, pineapple and stone/mineral notes on the nose. Medium bodied (8.5% ABV) with white peach and melon upfront. Mango, pineapple and additional white peach through the middle. The acidity is really impressive; bling I might have guessed 2015, that's how young it felt. Backside shows acidity enhanced citrus notes and intense whitefruit to go with spices and mineral qualities. As impressive as the mid-body is now, feels like there's a lot more there, yet to be revealed. This wine has the acidity, fruit and overall structure to improve over the next several years with many, many years ahead of it. I will certainly need to find some more of this; big miss on my part for not buying a lot on release.

Quite reserved upon opening, with 30m of air, white and yellow fruit emerged, though it was clearly holding something back. Slightly less sweet than the pradikat would suggest. The wine seems to be in a dumb phase now and suggest a hold.

Salil does Chicago 4; 4/6/2018-4/7/2018 (Chicago, IL): #04-15, 8.5% abv. After a long run of shot bottles of riesling, I settled on something that I knew would make me happy, even if it isn't the most exciting wine to drink right now. The nose shows a small amount of reduction, but features more prominently some very sweet and delicious white fruit. It's coupled with a lovely green herbal tone that carries on the palate as well. The raciness of this wine seems to have dialled down a little bit, so that the white-hot acidity that the 2012s had on release isn't as searing. Yes, this is not anywhere close to peak, but somehow, this is still quite delicious. I'd be overly optimistic to say that this is reemerging from its shut down phase, but this is surprisingly accessible.

8.5 pabv, AP 27 13; $42/750 ml; Dorothy Lane Market, Oakville, OH. Cellars International/Rudi Wiest. Coravin/Le Taster.
Polished rich brass, at first fully spritzig. Because initial contact suggested quite a bit more lees aroma (what some people call 'sulfur stink') than usual, along with 'Sponti' still perceptible in the form of a fermented hay note, sample was subsequently splash decanted. Green, minty notes of honey-drizzled peach and kiwi and clotted cream, perhaps even salt butter/vanilla , and with a note of energetic minerality underneath and full Spätlese mouth weight. Entrance sweet and limy but with a softish mid-palate at first, perhaps due to adolescent awkwardness, but fills in starting at about an hour. Gives a harmonious and brilliant glissando of flavor somehow containing and enfolding everything the wine has to show so far. Finish comes back strong and expressive with a tonic twist, encouraging me to think that even better times are in store. A wine that definitely picks up a powerful punch as the evening progresses, almost Himmelreich-like but with less spice. Drinking soon, a vigorous splash decant recommended, but better still, 2020 through 2030. 92+? for now. Now retasted two days later, all is confirmed. Remains at 92 points because of style issues (not fully typical of the expected vineyard's products in this producer's hands), but that may change. Now a sort of dry lime-slightly underripe peach, buffered by powerful fruit; a touch of blackcurrant, tasting sweeter than it smells, a sort of punch-up personality; just needs to reign in the horses and get over a case of the TDNs.

#04-15, 8.5% abv. The nose on this doesn't show too much reduction or sulphur -- somewhat muted, with aromas of pineapple, a bit of fresh herbs, and a slight bit of minerality and sweet pears. The palate isn't too dense, and the fruit quite light, with moderate sweetness. The acidity isn't as bracing as I remember it -- in fact, this has seemed to integrate a little bit, though mostly it's in a dumb phase (I know, my fault for opening this now). I know that I wrote this was almost Auslese level in a note a few years ago, but this has definitely receded back to the Spätlese level.

The first of my case. Beautiful blend of crisp apple and peach/apricot. Light bodied but full flavoured - quite an achievement - a sweetness that creeps up on you but is always kept in balance by the core steely/saline minerality. Immensely long. Perfect accompanied our fresh berry meringue dessert. Like many of the finest German rieslings has plenty of time to evolve (say 20 years from vintage) but nonetheless drinks beautifully now. Should be a great journey! Superb. 92++

Clear and brilliant lemon chiffon in the glass. Fragrances of honeysuckle and orange blossoms underpin a deep seam of petrol-soaked minerals. In the mouth float gossamer wisps of acidity, elderflower and canned peaches. Ethereal, perfumed finish.
Nose a bit of mineral and slight petrol. Taste of peaches. Texture thickening as wine ages. Very enjoyable now but will probably change with continued aging.

Bought £24.00 The Wine Society UK July 2016 Tasted well chilled, July 2016 Cork sealed.
Light straw colour. Nose not intense, which surprised me. A bit of kerosene and honey over limes.
Taste... big body, fills the mouth, lovely acidity, classy yellow fruit like pineapples and passion fruit, medium sweet true to style/label. Really really 'drinkable.' Doesn't need food. Not as intense as I hoped for, especially at £24 a pop. I had it up against a New Zealand 2013 Riesling at half the price - and the NZ one was much better (Framingham Classic Riesling Marlborough 2013). Still, there's a brooding class here and I have opened it too early, my next 2012 will be kept till 2020. Still marked it low Gold.
VFM? Not really, compared to the NZ Framingham at £12.00. Probably won't buy again.

There are 3 things I look for in German wine that can make them truly unique drinking experiences: 1)Perfection in balance between sweet fruit, tart acidity, salty minerality, and savoury botrytis/earthiness 2) A sensation when you're drinking that the wine somehow floats over your palate then slowly sinks down into your taste buds 3) A beguiling sense of complexity while still being stubbornly light in character. This wine nails the first two bang on. Like when you hit the nail and in one hit it goes all the way into the wood. Did I mention you can get a case for the price of one bottle of first growth? Exciting stuff, and maybe aging brings #3 into the mix (shudders) - AP 04 15

This is my rating - Rosalie was less impressed. The tasting was German or Alsace Riesling, and the Germans were all sweeter. I loved the structure and subtlety of this wine - I could drink it alone, or with some spicy food. Beautiful light gold color, interesting and complex nose that belied the sweetness to come. The finish just went on and on. As I said with the Trimbach, Rosalie's wine, we need to get more of these, drink them and learn about them.

AP 27 13. Ridiculously great Spatlese. Amazingly rich yet weightless. Lower acidity than the 2010 Spatlese, but in this case the richness is balanced out by a gripping, salty minerality. On the first two days this had an almost carbonated effervescence that gave it an extra buoyancy. Much livelier than the W-S Auslese from 2012 and I'd judge this as the Pradikat "sweet spot" of the 2012 lineup. As a technical note, this is one of three non-auction bottlings of W-S Spatlese in this year (AP 12, 23, and 27, the Auction being 21) and compared to the AP 12, this has a slightly saltier undertone. Both are wonderful, but I'd place the 27 slightly ahead of the first bottling. I haven't had the chance to track down an AP 23.

Very light, quite bright yellow. Lifted nose shows stone fruit, green apple, crushed rock, and a light petrol note. There is a great balance between acidity, residual sugar, and alcohol. Light bodied yet coats the mouth, with a slight effervesence, leading to a long finish of green apple. This is a Riesling that anyone can easily finish a bottle of on their own.

Passionfruit, peach and honey nose is the start of a wonderful experience in a bottle. Minerality and silken honeyed texture purvey flavours of peach and pear, summer, laughter and good times. Mid palate is a sweet zesty drive to the long moorish finish. A half bottle not nearly enough. Very enjoyable young and fresh. Will need impressive will power not to drink these before the decade of cellar time prescribed.

Tasted out of 375ml. Light and bright yellow. Nose had hints of honey, pineapple, peach, and a slight touch of sulphur. Palate was fairly rich but light weight. Nice acidity on the finish to balance. Bottle appeared to have been compromised (the capsule was loose and fill was down the neck compared to our others), but couldn't tell from drinking it. It was nice and crisp and clean. As mentioned in an earlier note, a bit on the sweet side, but well balanced with the acidity. Honeysuckle on the tongue. Laying the others down for a bit to see what some age will bring out.

Chicago Chardonnay Shootout (Chicago, IL): This has insane heft. Instead of the characteristic Prum matchstick, I get a bit of pineapple gummi bear that I find more often in Schaefer's wines. This bottles comes across as very, very primary, but to be honest I'm somewhat surprised how well this showed for a young Prum (not that I'd ever complain about that). Extraordinarily rich -- almost Auslese level?

JJ Prum - 2012 Range (Sydney, Australia): A burst of matchstick initially but this peels away and the resulting aromas are incredibly intense and perfumed - layered florals, pear, apple, slate and nectarine. The balance is exceptional, nigh on perfect, the sweetness is intertwined with brilliantly focused acidity and there is a sense of weightlessness even aside the great depth of flavour. One of the best young Spatlese I've ever tried - sublime stuff!

Absolutely fantastic Spätlese. This is all about purity, incredibly fresh citrus, apple and pear fruit that seems to be infused with slate and stony elements, and gentle floral accents on the aroma. There's remarkable lightness here with barely any sensation of weight on the palate, fantastic acidity, and amazing persistence on the finish. This is definitely one for the long haul.

Very pretty nose of lime and underripe stone fruit; citrus, crispness; steely, almost metalic, round mouthfeel ; spritzy (even two hours later); underripe (crunchy) peaches, minerality. Very long finish. This needs a few years at least to settle down. This is waaaaay to young. (L's note: "wine soda, a lemon-lime spritzer, I *like* it!") (91-94). [AP #17.]

Lovely golden straw color. Quite lush for a Spätlese, really a dessert wine for my taste. Rating reserved for a fresher bottle.

Just spot on if you want a Spat on the richer side - lots of peach and passion fruit and a bit of spice on the nose, tremendous energy and a mouthful of zingy flavour. Subtle notes of rosewater and less subtle notes of lime marmalade. Really mouthwatering.

2012 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Mosel, Bereich Bernkastel [Mittelmosel])

Superb. 92++

Bought £24.00 The Wine Society UK July 2016
Tasted well chilled, July 2016
Cork sealed.
