  • Subsequent notes on this wine from about 9 years ago. Dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward, assertive & aromatic nose of mature, ripe dark fruit aromas of cherries, blackcurrants & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, tobacco, leather, tar, coffee, anise, herbs, minerals & a hint of cedar. Full bodied with very good concentration of well balanced & silky smooth textured, mature, ripe dark fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with mushrooms, minerals & a hint of oak. Long, lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present and should hold onto this current stage of development for a few more years although any further development would be minimal. Ullage was in lower neck; cork was stained 1/2 up but intact.

  • Fruit has faded dramatically since the last bottle. Could be bottle variation but this has a lingering finish but little forward fruit after being open for an hour+.

  • Purchased from the winemaker in Italy in 2006 and bottle held up very nicely over 19 years in our home cellar.

  • Opened about 2 hrs before starting. Plum, anise and perhaps a bit of underripe strawberry. Finish that lingers forever. Very well made and drinking beautifully right now.

  • Surprised at the lively nose with floral notes at this age. Mid palate was full and pleasant if not exceptionally layered and finish clean and lingering. Great bottle. More fresh and fleshy than expected from 19 yr old brunello with dark berry, oiled leather and well integrated tannins on finish. Only one more; wish I had more

  • This held up spectacularly. At age 19, it is drinking better than any previous time in its life. It was balanced, loads of cherry and plum, a hint of classic anise flavors, paired exactly with our pasta and bolognese sauce.

  • - Ruby color with medium forming legs. It's balanced and has flavours of raisin and cherry with a medium/full body. Fleshy texture with a medium finish - Very approachable and delicious wine. Well balances with an outstanding nose. Tannins were not as pronounced.

  • Double decanted at noon and enjoyed with dinner at our family Christmas party. This is a lovely Brunello, very elegant and "light on its feet". Bright yet smooth flavors and aromas. Color is medium garnet with no negative sign of aging. Red fruits, some black raspberry as well along with some brambly earth, tobacco, cedar and licorice. Nice long finish. Most people's favorite wine of the night.

  • Over lunch. Remarkably, opened up much more slowly than the '10 Canalicchio next to it. After an hour, notes of sour cherry, flowers, baking spices emerged on the nose. By end of lunch had turned superb, with plums, blackberries, leather on medium bodied palate. Much more mature than the '01 Fuligni at this point. At ideal drinking point for those that love older Brunello. Should drink well for another five years. It was a great contrast of two top producers and vintages.

  • Another older bad Brunello. If this keeps up bye-bye Brunello. Cork ok, just tired, flat and done. So erratic, one great followed by awful. Suggest drinking up at these older Brunellos. And have a spare ready you may well need it.

  • Easy 93, best '01 Poggio Antico yet. Was really surprised at how much vibrancy there was in the fruit. Time has rounded any rough edges. Plenty of rich dark cherry and other dark fruit - plum & blackberry. Hint of tobacco. Nothing tired or stale, a structured Brunello in absolute prime drinking window. And rewarded with a long enjoyable finish. And no extended decant just pop, pour and enjoy.

  • All of the Brunello wines showed very well and this was no exception. Great nose of black cherry, sour cherry, leather, earth and hints of vanilla. On the palate rich with earthy cherry, leather, spicy oak, and black cherry. Long finish with plenty of grip. Drink with a little air or continue to hold.

  • Slow-ox'd for six hours. Drinking really well right now showing classic notes of cherry, plum, sottobosco, and a natural sweetness of fruit that comes when tertiary notes have developed in Brunello. Glad to have more in the cellar. Drink now-2020+.

  • A Mixed Bag in Toronto on a Wednesday (Jay's Place - Toronto, On): Slow-oxed for 6 hours prior to consumption. Pours quite dark with very light bricking. This wine is in such a fantastic spot right now, totally in the zone for my tastes. While clean and free from VA and Brett it is still so traditional with evident use of Slavonian Oak. The nose shows wonderfully savoury notes of balsamic drizzled strawberries, red and dark cherry, old polished wood, undergrowth, dusty soil, rosemary, hints of cured meat and pipe tobacco. The palate is still fairly structured with abundant acid and tannin suggesting there isn't a hurry to drink. The sweet dark cherry textured fruit on the palate is wonderful with a cherry pit finish that lingers nicely. Toward the end of the evening this showed savoury tomato paste notes on the palate that were thoroughly enjoyable. Everything I want in Tuscan Sangiovese.

  • Deep dark garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward, assertive & complex nose of mature & developed, ripe dark fruit aromas of cherries, blackcurrants & plums with earthy overtones, dusty, some floral notes of violets, cedar, aged tobacco, Portobello/Porcini, leather, some tar, grilled meats, coffee, licorice, olives, minerals and dried herbs. Full bodied with very good concentration of silky smooth & supple textured, well balanced, complex, mature & developed, ripe dark fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy notes, mushrooms, minerals, herbs & some cedar. Long, lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present and should hold onto this current stage of development for a few more years although any further development would be minimal.

  • Medium ruby color with some hints of brick at the rim. Full aromas of blackcurrant and dark cherry, some tobacco and hints of coffee and licorice. Full bodied with silky layers of mouth coating tannins, balanced fresh acidity and some sweet fruit. The finish is very long and has a slightly drying twist to it.

Great balance right now, not the most complex Brunello I know. I don't expect it to improve a lot, but it will certainly last for quite some time to come. Drink now - 2020.

The bottle was immedeatly open for business, although it fleshed out a little more after 5 hours of slow-ox.

  • 13.5%
Brought by J&R for "tough times" dinner.

Appearance: deep garnet moving to a thick brick rim. Long legs.

Bouquet: Briar. Raisin. Vegetal. Fig, roasted carrots, asparagus, charred meat. Sour dark cherry. Licorice. Fungal, porcini.

Palate: medium (+) acidity. medium (+) acidity and body. Medium intensity.
Black fruit, tarragon, stewed tomatoes, green olive.

Conclusion: Incredible look, nose and feel to this Montalcino number. Could even develop further as structure is well balanced but further aging would see the tannins drop beyond this perfectly balanced place and bring the acidity to the forefront. A real treat.

  • This is an old friend, our wine journey really began with 2001 Poggio Antico.

To be fair, this bottle was somewhat of a late night pop and pour since every restaurant was closed and all we could find was take-home pizza. This is a classic Brunello of sorts, though darker in color than most. Tannins are still firm, fruit seems like it is slightly diminishing though plenty muscular. Overall a bit austere, dark fruit, some tar, classic minerality and perhaps a floral hint on the finish.

Reminds me of an aging athlete maybe a step or two past its prime but still very enjoyable and plenty of pop.

Happy to admit I was wrong on this. Came back 2 days later to finish the bottle and wow, it was all there. Plenty of rich "fresh" fruit, lots of energy. Delicious this time. Maybe this aging athlete is a marathoner and needs real time to show its stuff.

  • decanted and opened for 1.5-2 hours before consuming. earth, dark berry, light in body, tannins were soft. lots of soul in this. very enjoyable. probably at its peak; doubt it will get much better. had it with 12 during an italian night dinner theme.

  • This wine was singing. Clearly at a peak. Regrettably opened it after dinner was finished, as it would have paired beautifully with pan-grilled steak (Florentine style).

  • Slow ox'd for the day, consumed over three hours. This bottle is still in its infancy and needs more cellaring. The nose and palate are not as expressive as I would like, and tannins are still very firm. The wine needs additional cellaring - check back in a couple years. Revisit in 2015-2016. NR.

  • I've not had this wine young, but one can tell at eleven years old that the tannins are soft, the oak has integrated nicely and the wine has benefited from a decade in the cellar. The color is young, bold even, compared to the older wines on the table. The nose is appealing with spices. Black fruits on the palate, no brown/chocolate notes, dark cherries, some spices, but as the structure has softened, the palate is not especially developed into secondary, much less tertiary notes. Could use more complexity, especially in relation to where the structure is right now. I would suggest holding this another few years for further complexity, but my concern is that the structure declines before the complexity comes out (if at all). With Izzy and Rachel at Apiary.

  • Wow, this showed very well with the Osso Bucco. Some evolution on the color, beautiful aromas of lilac, dried white flowers, some sweet cherries, spices and integrated sandalwood. Very fine and smooth tannins, coat the palate and very good minerality. This is very enjoyable now but could last at least 5-10 years.

  • Opened tight, bright berries, violets, hint of oak, whallop slate minerals and tannins. With air, it blossomed, loads of bing/black cherries, white flowers, minerals, grilled herbs, with much smoothed tannin. Fantastic. Drinking great with long life ahead.

  • Outstanding. This was a last minute grab for dinner, no time to decant. Beautiful deep garnet color and rich bouquet of dark fruit and tobacco. Consistent on the palate, with ripe plum and sweet tobacco. Wowed us all and I would buy more in a heartbeat.

  • Sophisticated nose with tobacco, cherry and rose. Sweet fruit, high accidity and powdery tannins. Consentrated and refined. Long taste.

Perfect match to grouse, seasoned with lime and pickled ginger.

  • Decanted for 1 hour before consumption. Ruby color, nose of spice, sandalwood and cigar box. Thin on the midpalate and finish. Earthy, dried cherries, spice, leather and mineral flavors. Mild to no tannins. That said, very smooth and enjoyable. Not sure how this wine will develope from here.

  • This was delicious! Needed some aggressive decanting (pour vigorously, shake/swirl decanter) and even then, the wine gave absolutely nothing for the first ten minutes, I was despairing but it then opened up dramatically! Ruby color, nose of cherries and violets, it tastes delicious! Well balanced, complex with layers of different flavors emerging at different times. The finish is about 45 seconds long and the wine has enough backbone to stand up to anything.

  • Opened the bottle an hour or two before dinner, and had a first glass with the meal. Nose was a little reticent, but black cherry, plum, cinnamon, and some hight toned orange and tart cranberry on the nose. In the mouth, leaning heavily toward acid, and in that thin way. Flavors were present, and I there was a citric twang to the acid, but this was not going well for me. Splash decanted and went back 2 hours later and the situation had improved - the acid was more in balance, the body had gained some weight, the tannins started kicking in on the back end lending some coffee and spice notes to a lengthening finish. For me, this still needs time and/or air.

  • Dark ruby red. Dark red berries, earth and coffee aroma. Rich, juicy mouth filling black cherries, licorice & a hint of chocolate with silky smooth tannins perfectly balanced with acidity for a racy long finish.

  • Beautiful wine, did not disappoint. It far outclassed the food (hamburgers on the deck on a beautiful Saturday night), but not every star needs a co-star. Plummy but not pruney, earthy, lots of minerals, even some spice. Very well-balanced, with plenty of structure but no astringency, and sufficient acidity to pair with our, er, burgers. Who says a good Brunello doesn't enjoy an occasional night slumming it?

  • CellarTracker Texas Offline; 5/21/2010-5/22/2010 (San Antonio): Actually consumed on Monday night with Jar1 and wine+art. Nose of pie cherry, cranberry, plums, violet, tar, tobacco, earth, mocha, red currant. On the palate red currant, red plum, tobacco, leather, cranberry. Finishes with sturdy tannins and nice acidity. Not as good as the last bottle I tried. Hold.

  • CellarTracker Texas Offline - Part Two: WIMLNR

This wine was allowed to slow-O overnight. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, fairly clear hue throughout. Nose of berries, cherries and a bit of mocha. Flavors of berries and cherries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. I failed to write a score on my note card but that's OK...I generally don't like rating such a young Brunello. However, it was quite good even young. Hold.

  • after 1 hour decented, I little disapointing. It is good wine, early tasting (2 years ago) was much better. Maybe it is starting to decrease quality overtime. I love brunello, buy compare to 2 others we had that night (casa nova di neri and Montolosi Altesino) this was #3.

  • Opened for four hours then poured. Nose of cherry, plums, violets, tar, tobacco, vanilla, earth, mocha, red currant, cranberry. On the palate, red currant, red plum, tobacco, leather, mocha, cranberry. Finishes with crisp acidity and fine grained tannins. Although outstanding now, I think it needs a couple more years. Good value. Hold.

  • Dark ruby colour. Very closed/restrained. Hints of orange peel, peach, sottobosco, hints of cocoa. Medium-full bodied, very closed. Most structure - fine tannins, but some hints of dark fruit. Moderate finish, ~30s. Do not touch until at least 2012, maybe later, as this needs more cellaring. NR.

  • At a wine tasting party we did five wines with dinner: a vertical tasting of 03, 04 and 05 Chappallet Cabernet, an 04 Costers del Siurana Priorat Clos de L'Obac, and an 01 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino. Each of these wines were huge hits with our guests but the Clos de L'Obac Priorat was the clear standout - the unanimous winner for all of our guests. The Poggio Antico Brunello was a clear number 2 choice, followed by the 04 Chappallet, then the 03 Chappallet and finally the 05.

  • Drank with dinner on Thanksgiving. Opened the bottle about an hour before dinner. Classic young sangiovese with bright cherry and plum aromas and flavors with spices and a rustic tannic finish. The nose was definitely a bit tight, but the wine was delicious. Finishing the bottle six hours after opening, there was much more sandalwood and the cherry had softened - the tannins had softened dramatically and added a burnt mocha on the finish. Very good, and still room to improve.

  • mild berry smell but overall somewhat closed nose. Dry wine. Berry flavors. Tannic. This may be my first brunello (dunno). It went well with the pasta dish. I'm not sure it was worth the price, but there was certainly nothing objectionable about it.

  • Enjoyed the wine at their osteria in Poggio Antico in Montalcino. Nice summer evening, coupled with air of cypress tree gum and light breeze. Decant for 1 hour, served with 7-course dinner. Intense floral notes of berry, currants, vanilla, cigar, with bit of minerality. Structured, good complex feel to palate, goes well with games. Good decent finish. Thoroughly enjoyed every drop of it.

  • Ordered off of the menu at Eclano (North End, Boston). Decanted a half hour before drinking, drank over two more hours. Nose of spice, meat, and roasted herbs. Tightly wound core of cherry and dark fruit with spicey, floral overtones. Balance was impeccable; slightly light body when compared to other Brunellos, but leads one to conclude that this wine is elegant rather than a hammer. I hope to drink alot of this, especially with Italian meals.

  • Trip to Italy 2006 (part 2); 6/13/2006-6/15/2006: Slightly less fragrant nose than the Altero. More red fruit and more delicate. Also more acidic, with slightly astringent tannins. Real strawberries, with a touch of cherry. Excellent. 3 years in Slavonian oak, 1 year in bottle.
