  • Nice nose of soy sauce, sweet roasted cherries.. Tobacco leaves, nice light red ripe cherries, very nice fresh acidity.

  • Seems to be slightly on the downside of its peak. Drank best with no decant.

  • Brought to drink at Oinoscent during afternoon service.
The wine was decanted for an hour.
The wine shows fully evolved colour.
The wine shows medium intensity, evolved character, sweet spices, sweet notes overall, oaky, earthy, forrest floor, savoury grilled meat notes and dried red cherries.
The wine follows the same pattern in the palate, toast, gamey, savoury, dried red fruits, light oak, alcohol heat (15%), almost dissolved tannins, oregano, coffee beans and chocolate flavoured decadent long finish.
At its peak and of outstanding quality. A great example of mature Chateauneuf du Pape

  • Dried fruits (figs and dates), loam, hoisin, umami, and tobacco. Interesting, near or at peak, drink soon.

  • In a nice aged stage right now, opens with worchestershire and soy, followed by some pruney notes that blew off to more dried figs, loads of garrigue, a touch of barnyard, dried herbs and potting soil. Declined over 3days open.

  • Still drinking well, a little short on the finish as others have said

  • Mature and likely showing at it's peak. Strawberry, rust, rosemary- traditional tones- more Rayas than Ex Machina in style. Medium/short finish. Pleasant.

  • This wine is drinking so well it's almost unbelievable... Thick, rich, raspberry jam, herbs, olive tapenade, meat, sage, pepper, graphite, tar... This is laser focused but voluptuous at the same time- the finish alone would stop traffic for miles. At age 10, over delivering and firing on all cylinders...

  • Light nose of red berries, sandalwood, boisé.... very concentrated, tannic, a bit too powerful and lacking fruit... 92+/100

  • White Burgundy, C9duP and Priorat (@ PC): Beautiful and elegant bouquet with beautiful garrigue. On the palate a touch of sweetness, good garrigue as well, a firm amount of good acidity and soft tannin. Beautiful wine, but lacking a bit in concentration for a higher score.

  • Light ruby. Still vibrant, succulent red fruit on the nose and palate. Medium weight (that is actually light in today's rubric of Chateauneuf), fine acidity, nice integration of a bunch of Provencale herbs. Outstanding bottle, clearly better than my last one about 6 months ago.

  • The first vintage of this cuvée, which I have drunk three times, the 2004 Pure displays an attractive bouquet of black cherry, licorice and flowers, as well as some aromas of soil and garrigue which are developing with age. On the palate, it makes a sweet and seamless impression, with the acids of the vintage keeping everything in check. The 2004, however, doesn't display the complexity or intensity of subsequent vintages, and I don't think it will be as long lived.

  • Light to medium red (much lighter than Usseglio Mon Aieul 04 tasted yesterday); open light nose, strawberries, raspberries (much more "feminine" than Mon Aieul); sweet, light, soft, "raspberry drink", very elegant expression with no heaviness; drinking extremely well right now

  • Corked.

  • Medium center, lighter rim. Fragrant with fig at first but then more red raspberry fruit and a touch of thyme. Medium weight, crisp, good acidity, slight bitterness at the end. Really very good save for the attenuated finish.

  • The nose had lots of toffee and the taste was just wonderfull. Not Grenache-sweet like type , as it is made off 100 % Grenache.

  • This is still a fine wine, but honestly, this was better a couple of years ago. The fruit has mellowed a bit, but there's not quite enough structure, acidity and interesting secondary notes to fully replace the the powerful elegance the fruit had when young. Sure, the raspberries and strawberries are there, but they're hiding. Sure, the figs have joined the party, but they can't be bothered with dancing into the morning hours. Still outstanding, but I'd drink up quickly.

  • Yes, Pure 04 most definitely appears to be on its way downhill now - this is a disappointment (for example, way less exciting than the 05 Telegramme). Not very fragrant anymore, not very complex, not as fresh or vivid, with sweet strawberry flavours, sweet liquorice, some residual sweetness and slightly hot finish. Like a banyuls grenache it pairs well with chocholate (!) but the love is gone.

  • I decanted this for an hour and despite 8 years of bottle age the wine is still surprisingly primary. Ruby red in color. Garrigue and herbs de Provence on the nose. Raspberries, spice, orange rind, strawberries, kirsch and pepper on the palate. Over a glass or two more traditional CdP flavors of iodine, blood, game, baking spice and plums began to emerge. The finish is exceptionally long and silky. Structured, prominent tannins and great acidity. This wine could use another 5-7 years in the cellar. There is a lot to like here and this is a producer I will continue to search out.

  • Red with tawny edge. Just full of garrigue on the nose. Light and elegant, licorice, spice, a brief burst of sweet raspberry fruit in the middle and then crisp acidity to bring it to a successful close. Quite discrete and pleasingly complex. Seems to be holding at the same high level as when tasted last year.

  • I actually nailed this, tasting blind - all except for the vintage, as it was quite developed. The 100 pct grenache from sandy soils with an underlying bright acidity was telling, and this was definitely an experience. A very elegant version of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, not quite up there with Rayas, but still a very nice wine. Mature now, but will keep 5 years or more. With Henrik, City-United.

  • Modern style. Really delicious but doesn't show the bright acidity I like on Grenache. The fruits are mostly black with some white pepper and other dark spices (maybe a little allspice?). I prefer more of a sense of place.

  • A subtle wine for CdP purists. This is pure, unadulterated Grenache. It is lighter in the style of decent producers such as Rayas, Les Cailloux Centenaire, Charvin, Pignan, etc. Grown in sandy soils from 100+ vines and definitely tastes like it. Overwhelming favorite by everyone at tasting...even those who are not CdP fans. Spicy red fruit, a hint of fig, and solid mid-palate give an indication to this wine's nobility. Still tasting hours later. Why didn't I buy more!?!

  • Quite shy on the nose, especially compared to three years ago. But the blue-print Barroche aromas are obviously there - strawberry jam, figs, spice, sweet liquorice - no problem to nail the wine blind. What the wine has lost on the nose, it has gained in harmony and drinkability. The alcohol is even more integrated than before, the body one or two sizes smaller and the acidity, garrigue and minerality more exposed. A beautiful wine, in this shape too.

  • Raspberries, tobacco, grilled meat and toffee dominates the flavor profile. Long lingering aftertaste that leaves a smile on my face. Quite light in structure with great drinkability (and likeability).

  • Even allowing for the restaurant prices, on balance this wine was overpriced for what it delivered. The spiciness overwhelmed the fruit (strawberry tart) and it was somewhat one dimensional and unexciting.

  • Medium ruby. Bright, lively red fruit nose joined by some herbal elements. Very pleasing weight and feel in the mouth, really rather elegant for Chateauneuf. Natural sweetness and a touch of heat, but it features the acidity of Grenache rather than hitting you over the head with overripeness or extraction. This was the first time I'd tasted this in 4 years and I found it much more enjoyable at its present stage. I imagine this is at a plateau of drinkability that will last for some years.

  • Wow! Superb! Had half the bottle the day after and it was even better! The sweet, mature fruit was unbeleiveable.

  • Strawberry jam, oriental spice, sweet liquorice and garrigue. Pure lust on the palate, with ripe orange acidity, lots of tickling spice and salty minerals. Sweet candy, but a tad thin fruitwise, which makes it all the more burgundian. Soo long....yum! Is this it - or will it improve further? Really hope so...

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Was very tight when first opened but evolved nicely. Red fruit and spices dominate. Elegant but powerful. Should have long future.

  • Rusty red to brown; nose of sweets and licorice; amazing taste, clear licorice, sweet, round, slightly spiced, powerful. Very good.

  • A little bit mute straight out of the bottle, but it's singing after just five minutes in the decanter. It sings strawberry jam. That first impression is a bit overwhelming but it opens up even more to figs, spices (garrigues, cinnamon, a touch of vanilla), mineral and a forest floor-feeling which makes me think of Burgundy. This is so elegant and classy, but is has power too. It easily handles the ground moose beef which we're having for dinner. I love the mineral, I love the little licorice twist at at the end and there is some good acidity too, almost citrus-like. It's fabulous with food, it sings with cheese and it's pure joy on it's own. This is my kind of wine.

  • Lovely wine made of 100% grenache. Comes across on the nose, good and oily, straw and barn. Big aroma which changed over a couple of hours. Delicate in the mouth, pure (!) bright flavors of red fruit (raspberry). Beautifully integrated tannina and acid, almost like a Washington pinot at times. The flavors also changed over time. Earlier the fruit, afterward the stink come to the fore. Made in a traditional style, I now want to try out the Barrots' other Domaine la Barroche offerings. I'm going to buy me a little more of this.

  • Occasional tasting group: C9duP 1998 - 2001 plus a few extra's. (@ PVa): Complex and youthful bouquet with very tempting primary fruits. Juicy. Good tannin and bitterness. A bit alcoholic but really an excellent wine.

  • Very little nose at first. Opened up after an hour, but still less than expected. Pure taste of violets and red berries. Velvety. A bit one-dimensional. Let us hope for even better in a couple of years.

  • Decanted 30 minutes and consumed over 1.5 hours there after. Based upon the weight of the wine on the palate, I can see the comparison to Rayas. However, the complexity tonight was not in the same league. Enjoyable none the less, I would hold on this for several more years or decant it for 2-3 hours minimum as the last glass tonight showed the most depth.

  • (at Christopher Daniel – Baltimore) Very cool to taste. Lightest color of the wines so far – ruby. Very different profile – this is very fruit driven and lush – clean black cherry fruit. Like a modern version of Rayas – I understand the comparison. This wine just screams out Grenache. Very “pure” – ha ha. A treat. (92)

  • Burgundian, slinky appearance - a brownish warm ruby red. Beautiful nose of old strawberry jam and raspberry reduction, with overtones of grilled meat, tar, aniseed, sage, minerals and flowers. Actually reminds us of barolos from Scavino and Sandrone. Subtle hints of kirsch. There's a fresh balance on the palate, with food-friendly, refreshing acids and herbs. The impression is one of lightness and elegance, in spite of the power and intensity. Sweetness is kept on a pretty tight leash, and the alcohol never takes over. Again we think of Bric dël Fiasc: the playfulness, the intensity, the viscous mouthfeel and the smooth texture. It's a really beautiful wine, we also make comparisons to top burgundy. Unexpected aromas of hip rose and blood orange appear as we speak. This is a lady - feminine, elegant and loveable. Worth every penny. Drinking perfectly right now.

  • Ruby colored. I have to admit I loved the nose on this. Cherry, raspberry, anise and I agree w/ Tanzer " a whiff of blood orange." Slightly tart in a groseille jelly sort of way but w/ good acidity. When the tannins subside a bit, the balance should be a thing to behold/taste. Nice finish. 100% Grenache and thus, the name "PURE".

  • This was a very unusual Chateauneuf and unlike any other old vine Grenache cuvee I have tried. Medium to light red color looks more like Pinot. The high-toned aromatics feature not only red fruits and anise, but also marked floral elements and ripe stone fruit (peach?). Fresh with no hint of overripeness, but the olfactory impression is one of almost sickly volatility and sweetness. I'm hard pressed to think of a red wine analogy, but the nose made me think of overblown Gewurtztraminer or Viognier in its marked perfuminess. On the palate, smooth, and rather elegant if simple; the fruit is excellent, acidity is bright, and tannins are not at all prominent. So, nice wine if you can overcome the nose, which, in my opinion, is unique, exaggerated, and not pleasant, but it is certainly not marred by the usual southern Rhone culprits of brett or surmaturite. My best guess is to drink rather than hold. This is the first Barroche wine I've tried; disappointingly, this bottle was neither worth the price nor the hype it has received, and it surely is NOT the seocnd coming of Rayas.
