Intense cherry red with slightly garnet nail, at the nose it is incredbly balsamic, with redcurrant, thyme (very beautiful here), earth to close it up. On the palate it has really lively tannins, with high but integrated acidity. Alcohol is a bit too strong but doesn't disturb the overall balance. The finish is very long and warm. Overall great wine but the feeling I had was of a wine that will never smooth the tannins before to take the descending road. I would give it 2 more years.

Surprisingly youthful. Deep maroon, with just some slight indications of age. Earthy, aged, quite rich nose. Nice palate, great balance, very good depth, long finish. Earthy; not joyously fruity, needs the right food. Quite glad that I have another bottle that I can keep for several more years, and see where this lands when closer to full maturity. Lots of sediment.

3rd bottle from a small case, and 15 months since my last one. Not much to add to my previous notes. This is well balanced but aromatically fairly muted. Not showing any overripeness or heat, to the contrary there is a subtle green touch that provides freshness together with the slightly elevated acidity. Nice easy drinking wine but nothing special really.

After steamboat dinner at Old Holland Rd. Pop and poured. Drank in Grassl 1855. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Sediments at bottom of bottle. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoky ash earth, meat and old leather, black fruits. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), resolving high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of roasted black fruits - blackberries, black cherries, leather meat, smooth dark cassis and spice, savoury earth. Some tea leaves on day 2. Long finish. Very good quality. Time to drink up and enjoy this well aged Aglianico.

Va areato tanto, anche bevuto su più giorni. È un vino possente, acido, alcoolico (troppo per i miei gusti), ma anche vegetale, fruttato, equilibrato e di nuovo acido. Ti prende a schiaffoni e poi ti intriga.

Pnp. Another nice bottle of the 07. Consistent with my last bottle this is a nicely balanced but aromatically somewhat muted red. Medium body, mainly dark fruit but not overripe at all. Everything is in nice balance but nothing remarkable either and I can’t see this ever going beyond the 90-91 point range. Very nice weekday wine in my eyes.

First bottle from a case bought on release. First time drinking Mastroberardino’s Radici, and the only other Aglianico I remember drinking is Terra di Lavoro. This is very different. Dark garnet with a translucent rim. Fairy muted nose. On the palate this is very round but without being overly rich or ripe. A nice, moderate 13.5% with no heat. Tannins fully integrated upon opening with more air they come a little but overall this seems like a nice, easy drinking wine at its peak in my eyes. Unlike Terra de Lavoro this is much more about drinkability than about impressive aromatics or delineation. While not showing any signs of oxidization, I would drink over the next 4-5 years as I cannot see further upside with longer cellaring here.

Finally, my last bottle (3/3) was not flawed - a first.
Key pointers of this wine: dark fruits, smoky and mineral (volcanic / ash). With this remark that the fruit is actually somewhat at the background and that the "terroir" really takes the driver seat here. Not for everyone, but I like it. Can still go a good few years I think. On day 2 still going strong...

Big full body. Tannins and acidity galore. Dark fruit predominates. The bracing structure of the wine hides the fruit. Five years away from its drinking widow and then at least another 10. Decant for sediment. Classic Taurasi.

Last bottle of 3 ... lowering last score (Dec. 2016) by a point for fading fruit. This is now kind of a one-note wine, that note being reminiscent of black licorice -- but it's a great note! Consumed over 2 nights, I absolutely love this wine, like slipping on a silk smoking jacket (even though I don't smoke). Absolutely seamless. My guess is that it will hold on for a few more years in its present state.

Very big. Not to be consumed without food. Tannins were well integrated with a 2 hour double decant. Lots of fine sediment so decanting is a must. Very tasty wine, dark fruits several secondary flavors. I suspect this will be on this plateau for several more years

Long maceration time, aged for 30 months in French oak barriques and large, Slavonian oak botti casks. 13,5% alcohol.
Beautiful, somewhat translucent blackish-red color. Somewhat sweet-toned, fragrant and immensely attractive nose with aromas of wizened dark berries, arctic bramble, mineral notes of sun-baked stones, some lifted plum liqueur-ish notes of VA, a little bit of licorice, light perfumed notes of dried flowers, a hint of ripe boysenberry and a touch of pruney dark fruit. The bouquet shows some age, but feels far from developed. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and quite powerful on the palate with bold, juicy flavors of sweet dark plums, slightly smoky volcanic character, some brambly blackberries, a little bit of ripe black cherries, light bitter notes of sour cherries and stony minerality, a developed hint of wizened dark fruits and a touch of sweet baking spices. Despite the obviously ripe and somewhat concentrated fruit, the wine never once feels lush or soft, thanks to the quite high acidity and still very firm and quite assertive tannins that lend a rather grippy touch to the mouthfeel. The finish is long, tannic and quite intense with vibrant flavors of ripe dark fruits, some plummy tones, a little bit of juicy strawberry, light sour cherry bitterness, a developed hint of raisin and a sanguine touch of iron.
A still very tightly-knit, youthful and muscular Taurasi that shows some obviously ripe fruit and sense of weight, yet still comes across as relatively lean and sinewy in contrast to the normal style of Taurasi. Overall a very beautiful, complex and - true to the variety - noticeably tannic Aglianico that is starting to show the first signs of development, but is still quite far from being particularly accessible. Calls for another 10-15 years to tone down some of that tannic structure and develop more tertiary complexity. Despite its future potential, the wine is very impressive already. Exceptional value at 31,60€. Highly recommended.

Spicy perfumed nose. Dark purple color with slight bricking around the rim. Cassis, plum, cinnamon, dark cherry, and allspice. Still powerful tannins and a bracing acidity. Needs at least an hour of aeration. The fruit is fading a bit in the background, but should hold on as this wine needs another 5 years to be anywhere near its peak drinking window. 13.5% abv. Decant for sediment.

Decanted for about an hour - but still a big dark tannic bruiser - I would go so far to say this was totally unyielding - even on day 2. No pleasure for me here - just lots of black fruit and astringency. My experience with these Radici Riserva bottlings (diff vintages) has been very hit and miss - sometimes they are great and other time - this! Bought this bottle in Rome for $35 and carried it home - so not a big investment but ultimately disappointing. If I owned more I would not even think about opening until 2025.
Needs decanting and to be paired with food. Tried with reindeer. Was acidic with elegant and nice fruits. Lighter and less complex flavours than expected and from what reviews have claimed. Very good, but not great.

More WSET wines (Chicago, IL): For such a large-scaled wine, I have to say that I enjoyed this quite a bit. The nose and palate are both large scaled, with copious black fruit all over. There's a bit of funkiness on the nose as well that I couldn't place -- perhaps it was a mild touch of reduction? There's a bit of ash in this wine that I think keeps this from being a generic fruit bomb. I'd certainly be interested in seeing how these wines age, though I'm pretty sure I've used up my Taurasi quota for the year already.
Stunning wine. Lovely aromas of red ripe fruit, forrest, meat and leather rise from the glass. On the palate its savory and precise, generous but not jammy, not vulgar in any way, long and elegant. My first encounter of this wine. Will buy more.

Decanted it fore 3 hours. Deep dark berrysmell, vanilla and some cedarcase. Smooth, silky tannins. Full bodied, with long strong legs. Deep taste of blackberry, mature cherry and spice. Some sigarcase in the long aftertaste. But I was told we could keep this in cellar until 2030. But I feel that it developes faster regarding the tannins fore a so long time. Probely reduce the horisont of cellaring down to 2025. It s a beatiful wine.

Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): { OperaWine2017, Verona } Already, surprisingly, approachable, with a distinct ripeness to the bevy of dark fruits that will appeal to many. There's a good dose of minerality and soil traits, and, of course, natural acidity, to keep long-time fans of the wine happy, too, but it might not appeal to those looking for a more restrained effort. I'm to the point now, where I don't really care much any more for divisiveness, I just want to judge what's in the glass on that context alone, and in that vein, this wine succeeds, it's delicious, and it's likely to get better each year for another decade, at least. Not my favorite of theirs, but it's no stinker, by anyone's measure. Better with 2-4 hours in decanter. recommended+
The first time I had this wine was at a tasting dinner and I absolutely loved it. I didn't score it then because I thought that the ambiance of the evening might have affected my judgment.
This time, in my house, I confirmed the earlier experience. In the nose, a nice swirl of dark fruits and maybe a whiff of menthol. Appearance: Not-quite opaque dark purple, pretty throughout. Some sediment on the bottom of the bottle. On the palate, tongue-hugging tannins, smooth-as-silk attack, those dark fruits again and black licorice. This aglianico reminds me a bit of some barolos, amarones and cabernets that I've had in the past, like maybe a blend of them. Happily, two bottles left which I will try to drink in the next 2-3 years.

Decanted for two hours; moderate sediment; garnet in color. Nose of cherry, vanilla and pencil lead. Full-bodied, somewhat jammy, dark fruit on the palate, with lively acids and soft tannins. Lengthy finish. Overall, a very enjoyable wine which should be drinking well for another ten years or so. Also, at $36/bottle, a good QPR.

Fairly elegant and already quite smooth. Tannins were more rounded than expected and there's some nice development also on the aromatics. I had perhaps expected a little more definition and class, but I won't rule out that there's more in store for the patient.

Dark eggplant color. Scents of black cherries, blackberry, tobacco leaf and black licorice. Simular flavors. First taste without food is very tannic, but soft tannins and smooth juice. Definately a good wine with any red meat (need some fat to soften the tannins). Became more fruit forward during dinner...it was very good.

Embers and smoke, very enticing and deep bouquet. There's also aroma of wool sweater and hot stones. Nice sweet fruitiness on the palate. High acidity, very present tannins, a bit vegetal mid palate.

This was fully open, round, delicious and straightforward. Wonderful freshness. The bottle was gone quickly. If you are not familiar with Aglianico, this is the one to cork at first.

This is such a surprising value. Definite Italian aspects, but more the boldness and roundness of a southern Rhone, stylistically.

Stunning Aglianico - big red fruits with a velvety smooth texture. Spent about 1 hour decanting after pouring through an aerator. A very big wine with a long finish. Looking forward to the next bottle.

With Shirley and Paul. A really terrific discovery; very much an italian wine, with full body and lots of nuance on the edges, starting to soften. I hope to have this again in 3-4 years.

Nose: coffee, perfume and pepper. Tuscan blend of merlot and syrah on a blind tasting.
Attack: sweet cherries, wild strawberries. interesting
Midpalete: A lot of dark chocolate, cherries, blackberries and oaky tannins. Pretty full body and nice acidity.
Finish: a lof of oak, pretty dry and long.
This wine is a great value wine but don´t save it more then 5 years. The 99 is better for sure.
