Tasted blind. Dark, tannic, deep/dark fruit. Low(ish) score because this wine was nowhere close to being ready. My comment after a few blind sips - “I think this will be a great wine someday, just not today”

Second of 3 (2/22, 93 points). I observed in my prior note that, while I thought this a wine of immense potential, I thought it hadn’t hit its drinking window yet, and upon opening, I was greeted with a tsunami of tannins making me think 2 years hadn’t been enough time, at least for my palate. After about an hour, this became drinkable, and it hit its most vibrant, integrated point after 2.5-3 hours, when the tannins stood down and the fruit asserted itself more. This is a classic Tuscan merlot-dominant blend, far more brambly and savory than the supple (to the point of blandness and smoothness) fare of that varietal here, so much so that someone used to CA merlots may struggle to identify the varietal here. As with the earlier bottle, this excelled with food, particularly a Tandoori lamb kebab, although with enough air, it’s a more than solid drink on its own. While I can take a small bow (thank you, thank you) from my prior TN in noting that this was likely to improve, I’m now inclined to think that this is at or approaching its high water mark, which should hold for at least a few more years, as the fruit may fade before the tannins come fully into balance. If so, this is still a really good effort, all the more so at the $60-ish price I paid. Will drink my last in the next year or 2, then on to more recent vintages. 93-94+ if scoring
Big yet elegant, blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, blackberry, currants, integrated tannins, long finish, makes you want to go back for more

Still going strong! Nose: earth, ink, mineral, black fruit, old barn, horse saddle...complex and dark. Full bodied, rich, deep, structured, textured, with dusty tannins. Dark fruit flavours mixed with dark chocolate and hints of pepper. Medium length finish. Needs decanting or a few more years in the cellar...'til 2030.

Prior bottle was corked. This one was fine. Tasted best within 30 minutes of decanting; lost a lot after several hours of decanting. Tannic but well integrated by now, acidity is not sufficiently high to balance tannins and ripe oak. Best consumed over the next few years.

Sweet fruit on the attack, along with hefty structure, that is hard right now. Not sure it has the fruit to cover the the structure as it matures. There is an elegance here from the 40% cabernet sauvignon and a smoothness velvet feel from the 55% merlot. Medium finish, straightforward. Still young, doubt it will ever soften.

Wow, really enjoyed the wild style of this wine. Savory dark and red berries, some great smoky mineral notes, some leather and fantastic tannin structure. Great complexity and balance. In a great spot now, but no need to hurry. Drink from now until 2032. (IG)

First of 3 ($59) from a recent auction lot. On the nose and palate, rich, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, black and other bramble berries, spice, asphalt, leather and the classic Tuscan terroir of cedar, smoke, and earthy minerality. Almost pitch black purple, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Massive tannins, powerful acidity, no heat. Good complexity, great intensity and persistence. I had the ‘15 and ‘16 of this bottling at tastings shortly after their releases and found them to be surprisingly open for business, if relatively primary, and the recent Valadorna, a similar blend from the same vintage, was so spot on I thought I’d burn one of these, particularly since I had 2 more. Well, in the words of the audience heckling the comedian telling a 9/11 joke, too soon! Unlike the recent Vietti Barolo, where the fruit, such as it was, had to be shaken out of the bottle, it’s all here already in this wine, but 4 hours of air before my first glass and a half, another 2 the first night when I was drinking said glass and a half, 2 more on night and now 1+ on night 3 still can’t quite get this balanced yet, let alone integrated. Not unpleasant for me to drink, at least for me as a tannin and acid junky, it’s very clear that this has more runway, and my last 2 bottles will sleep until 2025, when this wine should ascend from very good+ to borderline exceptional, then stay there for a decade, conservatively. As you might expect, at the current moment, a good couple of points plus now better with food, at least the right food, in this case red sauce penne with sausage and chicken, than on its own, but austerity and all, it wasn’t a chore for me to drink. If you have several, or even if you just want to check my veracity, pop away, but I think you’ll be happiest if you leave this alone for awhile. 92-93++ now, heading for 95-96+/

Very intense deep ruby in the glass. Youthful. Oak dominant with many of the same notes as other vintages. Menthol, milk chocolate and leather. Austere. Mouth puckering totally unresolved tannins. Some astringency. Medium acidity with excellent persistence. The most impressively integrated alcohol of any vintage. Flavours show more development than the nose with the wine’s black fruit core coming through. Notes of black cherry and blueberry. New leather and mint chocolate. Excellent length. This wine has huge potential. Drink 2025-2036

Consistent with prior note. Had B2B with a 2013 Ornellaia and it more than held its own (at only 40% of the price). One of the best value Bordeaux blends available from Tuscany. Has a few years of cellaring potential with a strong tannic core.

Superb Super Tuscans!: A nice wine but way too young. This wine is showing glorious fruit, but still quite tannic and acidic. It has the stuffing to be a great wine, and is drinking well now, although a little on the hedonistic side (which I don't mind). The palate shows plenty of red fruit, especially tart cherry with some chocolate notes and a little little leather. While it is drinking well now, there is no doubt it will improve with a few more years of bottle age. 93 now, but potential to go up a point or two with time.

Super Super Tuscans (Zoom): See ROCKNROLLER for bottle treatment. Dark chocolate and black fruit. Black olive, extracted with some acidity. I wish this had more acidity, it seems slightly jammy. But it does hit 90 for me.

Virtual Italy: Super Super Tuscans (Home): Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 8 hours; poured into jars for transport at 4:30pm. Drank a glass over 2 hours from 7:30pm. Very austere with crazy harsh tannins on opening, this came around nicely with air. Blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, pencil, red cherry. The palate becomes much more polished and almost soft, blackberry, blue fruits, dark chocolate, olive, gravel, and some rather sharp oak on the back end. This didn;t seem to have the same core of fruit and silky texture that I expected here. This needs some time to settle down the oak too. 91(+)pts.

Bottle opened about 2 hours but not decanted. In a pretty good place. Still fresh and vibrant. Dark fruit is out front with lots of secondary flavors, tobacco, spice and earthiness. Was pleasant on its own but really showed its stuff with bistecca. update - 2 days later this only got better. The nuances became more noticeable and the finish lengthened and more dynamic. If opening in the next couple of years I would give it a short decant.

Medium dark garnet color. A rich full bodied Italian cab blend with red fruit, plum, earth, licorice and moderate tannins. 15% abv but not hot or too jammy. Still room to improve with age. Decent bake for a SuperTuscan if this caliber.

Already ripe, so dried jujube is dominant. Thought it would be gone in hours but it lasted a week. Quite bitter and salty, strong, starting from medium plus to full, a bit thick. Good but not enough finesse. 91+/100

Opened, poured into a decanter (had a taste) and served about 1 hour later. Dark purple color. Nose of ripe plums and red earthen clay. Round and full mouthfeel, offering that plum and cherry notes, with some soy and mushroom on the back end that gives the wine depth. The tannins on the back end give and impression of red clay tiles. While this is big shouldered, the wine shows elegance and grace, even if big and fruit forward.

At SuMi, Noosa. This wine shone bright after an austere bottle of 96 Cristal because of its fruit driven exuberance. The colour was deep crimson and the nose exhibited almost overripe characters of dark cherries, cassis and plum with touches of fig and prune. The palate is well structured with plenty of fine tannins balancing the fruit in a way that avoids a cloying impression. This is a wine of the sun and all the better for it !

I had to try knowing the window is merely cracked and its confirmed. Too early. Disjointed with too much heat, but you can ID all of the parts that will one day materialize into a gem. I’m waiting at least 2 years for the next one.
Terrific black cherry fruit with notes of tobacco, leather and lavender. Even after a two hour decant, the tannins and fruit still need more time to fully integrate. This wine has much more upward potential but not quite there right now.

Decanted two hours, no sediment. Bright ruby color. Black cherries, leather and balsalm on the nose. Full-bodied dark fruit on a well-structured palate. Tannins are quite prominent at this point and the wine will benefit from more age.

Shared with a small group selecting wines for a wine and food pairing event. This was the best of all the wines we sampled. Wonderful color and a nose that consisted of dried figs, toast, mint, chocolate and cherries. Very nice tannin and acidic balance with notes of dried figs, peppercorns, black licorice and toast. Wonderful value and a terrific wine.

Popped and poured. Opaque purple colour. Dark morello cherries, blackberries, moist gravel, exotic spices and vanilla on the nose and palate – still quite primary, and to me much more reminiscent of a high end Aussie Shiraz than a Bordeaux blend. Ripe and hugely concentrated, yet still impressively balanced – seamless from start to finish and the 15% alcohol can’t be felt at all. Hard to keep away even at this early stage, but I’m pretty sure you’ll be rewarded with increased complexity and sophistication if you wait it out for another five to six years. Expensive, yes, but in terms of QPR this wine should outperform the vast majority of competitors in this particular segment (93-95 points).

Some evolution since my last tasting in June 2016 but not anywhere close to its prime. Upon opening very little action both on the nose and taste wise. After several hours of decanting, the mid-palate filled up and fruit came forward, but the finish and complexity remained close to none (unchanged even after 4 hours of decanting). Hold until 2022+.

2013 TENUTA SETTE PONTI ORENO TOSCANA- from the youthful color on, this exudes a playfulness only a hyper active child could perform; it is highly energetic, offers a different fruit profile from moment to moment, runs wild by mid palate and leaves one with the begging question of where will this land once it settles down and grows up; intense dark chocolate flavored dark fruit starts it out in the nose and follows on with massive, full bodied energy which crescendos requiring me to take a breath; let this graduate from college and re-visit in 10 years; 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot.

Lots of acid upon opening. Overall, very young and ungiving. Even after 5+ hours of decanting, tasted disjointed with fleeting notes of greatness on the palate over the following few hours. Don't touch the rest until 2018-2020.
Decanted for three hours. Espresso grounds, blackberry, milk chocolate, lava rock, Freesia, pork shoulder and hash. The palate is a long journey of structure and fruit, with so much balance and classic proportions. It's dazzling and earthy, yet deep. This is my favorite Oreno yet. Quite enjoyable now and able to cellar. Drink 2020 - 2040.

We decanted for about an hour, but it could have sat a little longer. Great structure, tannins and acidity. Should age gracefully over the next 7-10 years. Although a little tight, this wine should pay dividends with patience. The nose consisted of black pepper, toast, loam and dark fruit compote. Layers of black licorice, pepper, figs, spices and mint.

Tre Bonne Annee Best of Italy Dinner (Bricco): Bottles open for extended time but not decanted. Nose of dark fruit. Mostly dark fruit with some chocolate and a little earthiness, leather. Although young and the tannins are still noticable, everything is in balance already. I think it will be very elegant when it grows up. This wine needs more bottle time. But you can sort of see where it is going. This was my wine of the night.

Deep, dark reddish-purple in color; nearly opaque. Initially reticent nose which developed with extended airing following decanting into forward, attractive & fragrant nose of youthful, ripe dark fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & black currants with dark cocoa overtones, spices, earthy, tea, minty, minerals, vanilla and a hint of toasty oak. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, youthful, intense & unctuous, rich ripe dark fruit flavors of cherries, black berries & plums with dark cocoa, spices, earthy, minerals, vanilla & toasty oak. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting and extended airing but definitely needs & will benefit from additional time to develop to its potential. Elegance with power; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

PnP’d. A big and powerful wine that I enjoyed more than my last encounter. Dark berry, spice and dark chocolate taste.

Terrific stuff. First hour was not great but after that it really showed. Smooth and silky. Wait a few years for next one.

Medium dark garnet color. A rich full bodied Italian cab blend with red fruit, plum, earth, licorice and moderate tannins. 15% abv but not hot or too jammy. Still room to improve with age. Decent bake for a SuperTuscan if this caliber.

Really beautiful wine but very early. Lots of tannins and it needed to be paired with food. I would wait another 5 years to let it integrate. Had with a ribeye steak.

Already ripe, so dried jujube is dominant. Thought it would be gone in hours but it lasted a week. Quite bitter and salty, strong, starting from medium plus to full, a bit thick. Good but not enough finesse. 91+/100

Terrific wine with no rough edges that is just entering it’s drinking window. Can safely hold for a few years, but great now with rare proteins!

Nose full of aromas - earth, dried fruit, cocoa. Flavors of dark fruit & dark chocolate. Quite tannic - this wine was decanted for 5 hours.
HOLD & wait several years prior to revisiting.

Tuscany Tasting (Carpe Noctem, Göppingen): Glass: Gabriel Standard
Cuvee of CS, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Deep ruby color. Nose with drak fruit, some nail polish remover, cinnamon, spices. High tannin, med+ acidity. Complex with lots of dark fruit, pencil shavings, lactic notes, spices. Very young. Let it develop for 5+ years with a potential of further ageing of 10-15+ years. 92

Part of a 5 year Oreno vertical(09-13). This was huge with lots of potential. Tannic and young. It opened a bit after 4-5 hours and tasted similar to the 09, and '11. This will only get better with time. 93-96.

Closed at first then opens up to reveal smoky currants and toasted pumpernickel bread. A big wine but artfully balanced; full and compact fruit, rich, chewy tannin. High 15% alcohol, but it is well integrated and not obvious. Good, firm finish.
