Wine Workshop: Focus on Clos Rougeard (Cafe Evergreen): More in the light style that I had expected of 2011s and which we didn’t see in the white but definitely seems to come through more here. Herbal and some fruit. Drinking well with a long life ahead. Lovely wine.

My first experience with this wine, a pleasure to taste what has to be one of the greatest red wines of the Loire, I initially thought it was an aged Californian Cabernet, nose showed dark bruised red fruit, floral, unsmoked tobacco, bay leaves and dried florals. The palate was soft, elegant and savoury with red slight confit fruit, dried herbs and earthy notes which filled the mid-palate, this finished medium length and lingering. A wonderful experience!

I am a Rougeard lover, but I must say I was moderately happy with this 2011 Poyeux. This is a very good wine overall, but a pretty poor showing for Rougeard. The wine is elegant and quite fresh, has a nice structure and smooth tanins, but the greeness is very present both on the nose and palate. Slightly underripped.

It is a rare day when i have a chance to drink Clos Rougeard. I had this wine last about 4 years ago. It has come a good ways since then. Only my second experience with this sensational producer and once again I am extremely impressed…especially in a weak vintage like 2011. Raspberries, pyrazines, notes of leather. Garnet in colour, no orange on the rim after 10 years. Lots of finesse, almost Pinot Noiresque. Perfectly balanced and very refreshing. Violet on the extremely long finish. Beautiful! Enjoy now, I don’t see any reason to wait any longer…even though it should remain on this plateau for several years.

93 pts

Such a beautiful and delicate nose. Bottle’s been room temperatured since this morning, and decanted an hour before my 40th birthday lunch with Kez and Indie. The little taster suggests a beautifully sensual mouthfeel, with delicate fruit. Silky smooth, very very refined and easy to drink. Beautiful CR, beautiful Poyeux in an oft critiqued, or just seen-as-average vintage. Hard to pick at this one though!! Maybe just the length, could give a little more but that’s clutching at straws

Tasted blind after a lineup of 80s and 90s Burgundy. Clearly the elephant in the room. Fresh red berries and tomato leaf, some yeasty texture as well. Rather refreshing after all the old Burgundies. Lifted array of stemmy note, slightly natural. Initially thought it was Gamay, then guessed it was a 2011 Cabernet Franc after being told it wasn’t Gamay. Delicious. (89/100)

Had this in NYC at Four Horseman. When the bottle was opened initially I was very worried due to its intense oakiness but after about an hour of leaving it open most of it blew away and a more pure fruit profile came to the forefront to my relief. Having tasted this, the wine really achieves its reputation by creating a wine that feel more well made Pinot Noir from burgundy than classic cab franc from loire valley. There is such purity of fruit, precision, and zesty acid. Overall a very interesting experience but I find the prices of these wines to be out of reach for my personal purchasing.

From the wine list at The Four Horsemen (Brooklyn). So excited to see this on the list for a really reasonable price. Decanted for about 1 hour while we working on the Vernay Condrieu. The nose on this is red fruited, herbal and pretty. On the palate the red fruit is bright with lots of underpinning of green herbs, minerals and a very long finish. Very elegant and silky in mouthfeel, such a lovely wine.

La Tablee: Legends Dinner w E. Guigal & after party (Daniel & SommTime): Had a break between the Cote Rotie panel and the Guigal dinner both at Daniel so decided to go to the bar and get a bottle. Originally wanted some bubbles, but it's just very hard to turn this wine down when we see it. It's wonderful. So very fresh and vibrant. Lots of pieces of the forest. A bit of spice. Approachable now, but I suspect able to last as well. Had a glass which I left till after the dinner and amazing how much it can open up with some more air.

Wow! Heard a lot about this producer/wine but for the longest time just never had an opportunity to get ahold of a bottle. For everyone who wonders why does a CabFranc from Loire, which normally costs 40$ all of a sudden should cost 400$, here is your answer: Think of this wine as an elegant Burgundy with lots of stemmy aromas, like Dujac. The palate is sublike, elegant, leally like a Burgundy, the aromas have losts of red fruit, cranberry and that CabSav leafiness on the finish. Sublime, alas expensive. 96-97
Wine dinner (The Morris, SF): Just an intoxicating nose with wild berries, spice, incredibly complex, slight whole cluster stems; palate is medium body, present medium tannins, balanced, very lovely; finish is medium-long. This is a stunning nose, and overall a unique and well made wine with character. A rare treat. 95-96

Wonderful expressive nose. On the palate silky textured, with excellent balance of fine, ripe tannins, acid freshness and blackcurrant fruit ending with intensity and finesse. A Les Amoureuses-like experience!!

Clos Rougeard Vertical 2009-2011 (Sunfish Cellars, St. Paul, MN): Medium red color, both the '11 Le Clos and Poyeux were much lighter in color than the '09 and '10 wines. Decanted for 100 minutes. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Part of a vertical of CR 09,10,11. Plum, blue fruits, cherry, ripe fruit nose, vanilla, spice box. The palate is more concentrated than the '11 Le Clos, more blue fruited and darker red fruits, cherry, orange peel, more youthful tannins, and some wood spice.

Medium-lighter ruby color. First slightly closed but opening up beautifully with a decant. Vibrant notes of raspberries, red cherries, also some darker berries, green bell peppers, spices and earthy undertones with a touch of balsamic notes too. With some more air it's turning a little darker too with notes of violets and elderberries. It's medium bodied, weightless but with beautiful persistence. A total Ballerina. Great freshness with pretty high acidity and medium-high barely recognizable tannin of perfect quality. Excellent length with saline minerality and beautiful acidic tension. I adore this wine!

Longueur moyenne +. Encore 5 à 7 ans en bouteille lui fera grand bien.

Good colour depth, dark, medium. Lovely smooth red, black and blue fruit fragrance. Bright tones plus some gentle dark spice. Silky smooth texture with super fine tannins and subtle acidity. Raspberry, plum and blueberry fruits, and with some dark earthy spice that blends easily with the fruits. Delicious drinking. Has all the refinement and subtlety of a good burgundy with more subtle and earthy adge.

You can see the relation to the regular 2011 Saumur, but this kicks it up a notch with a bit more depth and complexity, hints of mint and basil. Retains the 11 elegance and earth, dialed up to... 11
Clos Rougeard at Absinthe (Absinthe SF): Medium minus ruby. Herbal nose - anise and cumin/curry. Ripe and Bretty on the palate, with medium plus tannins (rounded and developed). Oak isn't noticeable. Acid is just medium. Less interesting to me than the others. Between 8.5 and 9

In 2011 the Poyeux is a notable step up from the Clos, with a pure and attractive bouquet of red berry fruit, lovely tobacco smoke, a touch of savoury sous bois and a floral top-note of peony, with a gentle framing of oak from this cuvée's one-used barrels. On the palate the wine is sappy, expansive and quite delicate, with lovely charm and poise, but without the authority or intensity of a really great vintage. And attractive middle-weight.

Clos Rougeard Vertical-2009 to 2011 (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): The most floral aromas of any of these wines. Very pretty. An extra layer of flesh compared to the regular Saumur of the same vintage.

Loire Valley (Pearl&Ash, NYC): More of sour cherry taste as compared to two other sumurs in the line-up. Thought of a Volnay. Complex and layered wine, with sweet yet sour fruit contrasted against a touch of oak and leafy aromatics. Balanced. Very good.

Magnifique. 93+

Pretty classy and approachable now. Kept thinking how elegant and polished this was, somehow in an understated way. Really get a sense of Loire cab franc and soil -- bright red fruit meshed with savory herbal notes.
