Cool blue fruit, violets, smoked meats, licorice pastille, barnyard, herbs. Good amount of soft and rich fruit. Tannins are toned down, but still some left. I wouldn’t hold onto this much longer because I want some structure and resistance. Very good!

[Restaurant purchase] blinded by the sommelier and arrived at Northern Rhone driven by the typical black fruit with bacon, meaty and some licorice notes. Great surpise, lovely wine
Outstanding young Cornas, shimmering with bright energy and showing more openness and elegance than I expected at this age. It isn't as packed and structured as the surrounding vintages and clearly won't go the distance they will. On the contrary, it offers an immediately attractive perfume and plenty of red/purple-fruited, smokey, meaty goodness set against a cool, mineral spine. There's just enough wildness and tannic bite on the finish to remind you this is Cornas. A few more years will do it good, but there's no crime in enjoying one now.

A beautiful purplish-red robe, quite opaque at the center. Soaring aromatics full of ripe blackberry, forest notes, cocoa, and baking spice with only traces of grassy, feral funk, often a hallmark of Cornas. The nose here is both elegant and restrained without any hint of being manipulated into submission.
Simply smashing on the palate, soft almost velvety in texture, expressing ripe fruit that flirts with sweetness and fleeting impressions of tapenade I didn't pick up at first on the nose. Tannins fairly gentle but with sufficient grip on the upper gumline for a firm dry finish. 14% ABV does not intrude.
I tend to drink syrah and especially Cornas more frequently in cooler weather but this was a great choice tonight, and I loved it with a gourmet takeout lamb gyro.

At first a Heavy smokiness on the nose, but with air much more of sweet red fruits, leather and Tobacco. On the palate medium bodied, with noticeable yet elegant tannin, lively acidity and a Lovely micx of red and dark berries, with some meaty carahter. Good stuff.

Tasted in a vertical with some Robert Michel as well, this one was the most imbalanced of the bunch with a very funky nose upon opening, which blew off a bit after a few hours. I’ve had other bottling from Paris which showed brett on the nose, but it always vanished after a while. Not quite sure if there was something wrong with this bottle.

Geynale study (Chicago, IL): Something not quite right with this bottle, I think. I've never picked up so much brett on the nose in a Paris wine, and this had it in absolute spades. Underneath it was some of the expected black fruit and a hint of spice, but it was mostly obscured by the brett. There was also a lot of funk on the palate as well, and an overall dirty sensation, which really isn't right. A certain master somm said it was corked on the palate, but being as sensitive as I am to it, I can't say I picked it up.

Excellent.
Very expressive, especially for being so young. Full of Northern Rhone Syrah character. Pepper, meat, violets, mineral. Very good value for 60 bucks. Potential for a higher score with age.

Dirty nose of cowshed, blood, lovely dark fruit and slightly twist of orange peel. This wine is elegant yet powerful. The taste is spicy, dark, deep, warm and intense without being too corpulent. Still this wine has loads of nice acidity and round soft tannins. The finish is quite long - I really recommend people trying this wine. Uhmm...

In a vertical of 12/13/14 magnums. This got better and better over a few hours. Ended the evening showing excellent depth and layering with classic N. Rhone Syrah notes. Round, rich and providing good pleasure while staying classically Cornas.

Cassoulet at Bill's (Wilmette, IL): From magnum. Perhaps the most accessible and open-knit of the Geynale threesome that we had today. Like the 2013, this had a tinge of darker fruit to the red here, and I thought that I detected a little bit of earthiness as well. It's a fairly dense wine on the palate as well, and I thought it a little more expressive than the 2013. It's definitely the wine for drinking now, but I'm not sure it has quite the same amount of oomph as its older sibling for the longer term. That polish which I've criticized in the Paris wines before is here, but it's more attenuated in comparison to the older vintages.

Concentrated wine with leather, minerals, juicy dark berries and pleasant barnyard. Good balance between acidity, tannin and sweetness. Still quite youthful. 2025+ should be no problem at all.

Blind pairs (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. So immediately obvious this was Northern Rhone. The question was from where? I went immediately to Cornas based on a more meaty profile, with some black fruit, and because there seemed to be less emphasis on the brine and pepper elements in this wine (even though they're there). This seemed a little glossy to me, if still a very well-made Cornas, and I correctly guessed Paris as the producer.

One of the best vintages of La Geynale I have tasted after Vincent Paris took over the plot from Robert Michel. There is flowers, violets, olives, broth and blue fruit on the nose. Great density of fruit on the palate, great lift. The wild and rugged side of Cornas shows through here, something I have sometimes missed in Vincent's wines. Good balance and structure as well. Bravo.

Munn: Blåbær, bjørnebær, allspice, rød pepper og et tydelig preg av mørnet kjøtt. Saftig og god med en kjølig fruktstil, flott balanse. Hadde forventet mer lengde. Youthful nose. Lifted violets, black cherries, black currants, black pepper, smoke, brown spice (allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves). Mid-weight on the palate, more elegant than powerful, a somewhat polished expression. Not forbidding as young as it is, but bitterness from the stems might be an issue with some tasters. Promising, needs a few years to really get going. Look forward to enjoying these bottles 2020-2030.
