89 pts

Couleur or soutenue.

After an oxidized bottle a few weeks ago I am still trying to see... some nice weight, some notes of white flowers and a nice acidity again ... a beautiful village ... I like this bold concentrated style much more than the style full of sulfur now-a-days

There was a bit of nuttiness that blew off to reveal a very pure wine of intense white peach. There's some mint and spice too. It is direct, compact and linear, with a big squeeze of lemon to the finish. Outstanding village wine.

Taste: menthol. At first rather massive oak, but after a while in the glass opening up, with more balance between fruit, oak, acidity and menthol. At the third day very nice, refined flowers in the nose. The taste showed a very nice balance between fruit, oak and acidity. A little bit creamy and with a nice tension. Terrific. With the Chateau Carbonnieux 2009 (tasted at the chateau in 2011) the best white wine I’ve drunk so far. After this bottle I understand the enthusiasm for Ramonet on CT at last. I would drink another bottle of this before 2020. At the first day 89-90, at the third 92.

It’s such a privelege when I can secure a case of a great wine, and follow it along over time. Normally, I would be more patient, but that’s the point here. It’s very, very difficult to keep my hands off Ramonet wines.
What I love about these wines is the purity, the precision. That essence is just as clear in Villages and Grand Cru.
The last vintage I enjoyed quite this much was 2010, but I didn’t have the good fortune to own very much. A 6 pack of Ruchottes that I would “save until it matures” - HA! It was so delicious it was gone in two months.
With 2014 I vowed not to make the same mistake. I was fortunate to secure a case of Chassagne Montrachet and I have enjoyed 11 of the 12 bottles as of today. Each one brilliant.
BRILLIANT
There’s a sense of life in this wine, it speaks to me. There’s tension, but there’s also a welcoming succulence. It just has everything.
I’m so excited to drink more 14 Ramonet, and I’ve kept my hands off the premier crus. While I fully expect the “better” wines to deliver more, I deeply admire what the winemaker has done here at the Villages level.
The best word to sum up this wine: scintillating

From a half bottle at a restaurant, so limited notes. Pale colour, striking purity of fruit both on the nose and in the mouth, but basically a simple wine; maybe complexity will come with age, but I would not bet on it. No oak. No opulence here, but plenty of style. Went very well with monkfish and better still with scallops.

Cork: a streak of wine onto 2/3 of it. Color: quite light yellow-green. At the first day: soft nose with apple, refined tropical fruits (peach, pineapple?), a hint of mint and - remarkably - of sage. Taste: followed the nose with a nice acidity and a modest amount of good oak. Better after half an hour in the glass. Altogether a soft, very nice wine. Nevertheless I missed a bit more tension. At the third day better integrated with a super-civilized nose. The taste was very balanced and had enough tension. My only remark was that it had just a bit to much oak. A very chic wine. At the first day 91, at the third (91-)92.

Blind Wines with Indian Food (Basanti in San Juan Capistrano, CA (South OC)): Poured blind. The aromatics on this were engaging, with a mix of flint and reduction/smoke, that whole mix of aroma that reminds me of the 2014 Kutch Chard--same impression. Creamy-edged palate with lemon peel and a minerally spine that finishes with nice balance. As this aired and warmed, it continued to fatten up some more but it never lost the balance of when it was cooler and it remained delicious. I will also add that this wine was in quite contrast to the oaky showing of another JC Ramonet from last month, although that was a 2015 La Boudriotte. While that wine to me was marked by a lot of vanilla bean and oak tones, this 2014 CM cuvee showed none of that.

Served blind. Lemon vanilla cream nose with a whiff of alcohol. Clean, light bodied palate. The fruit shows a bit of ripeness and cream. Leaning heavily on Chardonnay for a guess.

Served blind, this was served way too cold. Initial notes were mineral and distinct oyster shell, this could be Chablis. Noteworthy precision here. As it warmed up, started to get some tropical notes. This is clearly at 1er quality in this vintage.
Day 2: More mineral and precise, even better than yesterday. The toughest critic, the Swedish Princess, says "Wow this is good sh*t." 😂

A favourite producer and this does not disappoint. Very creamy almost Meursault like style makes this Chassagne full-bodied and more accessible than expected (although Ramonets wines are normally quite accessible). Exotic fruits but as always good balance and a adequate to say the least acidity.

The broadest nose of the three (Leflaive and Lafon village 2014) but with the purest and most mineral driven acidity. The Leflaive was more restrained and "clean". Lafon was the best drinker at the moment, nose and palate in combination.
Very good indeed; dry, mineral, full bodied, almost creamy. It has a rustic Chassagne-character to it, rather charming... could not guess it, though...

Ramonet in Alsace (Domaine Albert Mann in Wettolsheim): Are you frigging kidding me? This is "just" village level? Amazing for its aromatics that manage to combine wet stone, citrus, white flower, and touches of oak (about 15% new oak) and, well, the nose already conveys "depth" happily followed through on the palate, medium+ to full bodied. Hell, easily full bodied, but in a very fresh sense, loving the acidity from 2014. Rock and roll, this is Burgundy!

Light mouthfeel, pear and mineral, very good length for villages. Drinking this makes me very excited for the future of Ramonet's 2014 range.
With air the volume of the wine increases, and the finish becomes excellent. Quite impressive for its level.

J50 (Copenhagen): Served as the last wine after a bunch of great reds, this was refreshing, yet ful bodied enough to shine, lots of spice, hints of oak, but the classic mix of butter, minerals ... still young.

Typical ramonet style quite succesful in 2014 with the acidity from the vintage.

Foncez !!!!

Way, way too young. The potential is there but it needs hours to show. Very closed nose. Better palate but no harmony yet. 86 now but it will improve.
