  • Getting somewhat pruny and the fruit is browning further. Perhaps like the Chateauneuf. The 2004, at this late stage, is a much better wine. Past peak, and certainly time to drink up.

  • Starts to display tertiary aromas of leather, smoke, mushrooms, while still there is the garrigue spicy aspect. Nice attack and good presence on the oalate. Quite long finish. Ready to drink.

  • This has aged just as well as most Châteauneufs and it is awesome right now. The fruit is now darker and deeper, there’s notes of dates and figs providing complexity and interest. Pure and local, garrigue in spades, pepper, tannins almost resolved. Will keep. Lazy afternoon at La Contadine.

89+ pts

  • Rhone Tasting: Elegant and floral with sweet cherries and roses on the nose. Silky but still firm tannins, lots of plums and red cherries. Smooth but still powerful with notes of herbs, black pepper, red pepper, earth. Tasted blind, I guessed this as an 09, it was that well-structured and seemingly young. Impressive to see how well this is doing (given proper storage, of course). Charvin’s Le Poutets can age!

90 pts

  • Bought chez Charvin and stored in France. I can see from my notes that this wine was drinking well in 2010 and four years later it continues to do so. The nose is floral and dominated by pretty red fruit, the palate gentle and refined showing the same red-fruited profile. This shows the same elegance and refinement I find in Reynauds wine and which I've found in the lighter vintages for Charvin. There is no hard edges here but the tannins are still present underneath which means there is more to come. Enjoyed over several days with no change of profile.

  • Something wrong here. Sharp on the attack, something off-putting, jagged palate. Did not improve over three nights.

  • Approaching the end of a case bought on release, and this, like the last few bottles that I've opened, showed too much funky brett. Did not blow off with air, even over night nor the third night. Too much brett for me to enjoy this wine.

  • Very nice CdR with breath depth from minerality to developed fruit. Still will drink well for three or four years.

  • In line with prior bottles from this case, showing a good amount of bretty funk that partially obscures what should be lovely, pure red cherry Charvin fruit. Good, not great because of the brett, although Abbey really liked it.

  • Out of plastic cups at Compo Beach, but still satisfying. Dark fruits with a core of red raspberry, meaty, peppery, moderate funk, solid in the mouth but with a smooth texture, this has aged nicely and seems to be right in the zone. However, the brett level is pretty high, and I see that my last few TNs for this wine cite high brett. In this bottle, it added some funk to the palate and was not overbearing. Good wine for a Saturday night at the beach, and well received by Abbey.

  • At first, this reminded me of the 2001 Coudoulet that I opened a few nights prior, because both of these wines showed a resolved palate with no tannins. Then this wine set itself apart by the presence of Brett that obscured the fruit. This wine should be in its prime, but it was a disappointing bottle.

  • Seems thin on the first night, surprisingly. Should be right in the zone, but it's reticent. I recall the '00 and '01 Charvin Cotes du Rhones to be much more open and giving at a similar age.
Much better on the second night, showing no thinness, much brighter fruit. Very nice purity and honesty to this wine.

  • My third bottle this summer, from a case bought on release. This bottle showed more brett than others. Otherwise, drinking very well today, with well-defined red fruits and spices. With the Parneses as Hurricane Irene came down.

  • Deep cherry fruit with some black pepper notes. Good focus. I couldn't get too analytic, as I was drinking this out of cups on the beach, but it was very satisfying.

  • This wine has improved since trying it last year. There is still a spirity grenache aspect to this but it is beginning to round out. There is some nice garrique and cherry. Still a touch 'hot' in the mouth but very southern Rhone, some glycerin and drinking nicely. No rush though. (86-89)

  • Lots of red fruits, cherry and strawberry, with a hit of white pepper and some pine scents also. Not as angular as I recall bottles shortly after release, yet there is still some strong tannin left here. No degradation overnight, the wine is showing clean red fruit with good vibrancy and focus, and little tannin overnight. Still, I’d give this one another 6-12 months of age and check then to see if it’s ready.

  • This wine is drinking so well right now. It is one of the wines from Charvin that reminds me most of Rayas; concentrated raspberry and cherry fruit with hints of earth and sweet tomato juice. Will develop more nuance with age, but I'd drink it now for the sheer pleasure of the fruit. Outstanding wine.

  • Surprisingly open and delicious. Highly expressive raspberry and cherry fruit with dusty, earthy marks. Much more ready than the 2004 which is still somewhat restrained. I can understand why some people would call this wine Burgundian. I'd start to drink this now and over the next 7-10 years.

88-89+ pts

  • Rhone-to-the-bone. This nose alluded to tar, briar, but with an industrial funk that I really found interesting. Like a menthol-gone-barnyard kind of thing. Also, asian spice and pepper notes layered with red pulpy fruits. The palate did lack a bit of oomph (perhaps compelling Chris to set the wine aside) but the tannin waltzed sveltly with the soft red and black fruits whilst the spice glided by. Or whatever. Finish was medium with a chalky, briar patch ending.
Nicely done. If I had more bottles, I might reassess at a later date.

(For the record, upon Pop and Pour, Chris first reaction was "let this sit. We'll drink this tomorrow night" and he promptly returned to the other WA red on the table.)

  • Charvin's Cotes du Rhone vineyards are a galet's throw from his Chateauneuf. best decision we made in a while was to put a bunch of the 05's down to see what would happen because of the quality of the wine (despite the humble nomen Cotes du Rhone). a few years ago it was slightly shut-down, but now...wow! almost feral otn---rich, brambly fruit with some nutty qualities. wet fur (in the best terroir-sense possible). stony, spicy perfume, tar otn. now trying to pace ourselves with the remaining bottles.

  • With Peruvian chicken. A much better showing than 10/1/08 (see TN below), this one has come together over the past eight months, but I would still give this one more time. Showing solid cherry and plum fruit and tannin, but the tannin has softened and the wine is less angular than last time. I think another couple of years and this wine will take on that warm, fuzzy, resolved CdP/CdR profile that I like.

  • Lovely medium bodied with black cherries. No blockbuster, but a wonderful food wine. I'm sad to see my last bottle tossed into the recylcing bin. Now for the 06s

Encore bien trop jeune. A attendre 3-4 ans. Beau potentiel pour un côte-du-rhône.

  • This wine was like a chameleon. On day one, it showed plenty of forward fruit and structure. It resembled a Chateauneuf in many ways, but lacked the depth of a good CdP. I had to run out and only drank one glass, saving most of the bottle for the second night. On the second night, the wine began very angular, not friendly at all. Perhaps it was too cold. It took about four hours to open up and soften, and when it did it was much softer and better, but still quite primary. It also seemed to be all over the place, with the tannins peeking out a bit too much, the acidity apart from the fruit. Give this one another year to come together. Sort of irritable right now.

  • Dark ruby color. Notes of lavender, violets, red berries and flower petals...somewhat of a soapy/florally character. Decent acidity, medium bodied, with black cherries, dark fruit and raspberry flavors on the palate. This too finished a bit on the austere/dry side. $17.09.

  • A solid CdR that shows game, grip and raspberry fruit wrapped in a tangy envelope. This has to be one of the better wines that one can purchase. A solid value at $20 and a wine that will improve with near term cellaring. Plenty of structure to see the wine develop; Drink thru 2010-2012.
Can't wait to pop one of the mainline CdP's!

  • Loads of red fruits, garrigue, and a little earthiness. Dusty tannins. While it may not have the same palate and fruit weight, this outperforms many Chateauneufs for half the price.

  • clear ruby red, fragrant nose...I liked this a lot, especially given the price. My kind of wine. nice acidity, pure grenache fruit and terroir driven,, nothing out of balance and overall very fine despite the mediium weight.
    Benchmark CdR.
($14) bottle variation unfortunately.... low of 85 high of 89.

  • This followed the 05 Coudoulet by a few days and made for an interesting comparison. Both are great, but different. This one showed more blue/purple fruit, was dense and meaty in texture. Very primary, needs time. The Coudoulet, while young, is more accessible today. The acidity on the Charvin is vibrant and lends a freshness to this wine. Really enjoyable.

  • Kdawg's note describes this wine perfectly. It's a quite pleasant wine for $15.50, with an alluring nose of cherries and pepper, medium body, a nice mouthfeel and an enjoyable finish. By no means a blockbuster, but a lovely wine for the price; I'll be buying more.

  • nose: nice grenache nose. spices, underbrush, black cherry, berries, and some licorice hints

taste: nice full mouth. spice, licorice, cracked pepper, and some gameyness to it too.

overall: really nice. big and full on the mouth with a really nice lasting finish. a bit thin on the mid palate and not extremely complex, but this is very good. extremely enjoyable and has very good structure too

  • Nose of game, ripe berries and underbrush. Medium bodied, lots of ripe berries, vanilla, minerality, earth and a little dusty cherry cola, chocolate accent on the medium-long finish. There are some tannins.

  • An terrific QPR here. It's a Chateauneuf du Pape in a a Cote du Rhone bottle. This was shown clearly when I visited the domaine in May. The CdR vinyards around the domaine are separated from the CDP vines by a little road. It's the same soil and is producing an outstanding wine. Nice tea and mushroom on the nose. On the palate, the balance is excellent with some interesting secondary characteristics bubbling up from the ripe fruit. I'm backing up the truck on this. at $20 it's a cheap bottle of '05 CDP from a super producer.

  • David Bowler Fall 2007 Portfolio Tasting (NYC): Medium ruby color. Nose of slightly overripe fruit, black cherry and strawberries. Full and a bit candied on the palate, a touch sweet.

  • Nice nose of herbs, garrigue, cherry. Still somewhat closed. Smooth tannins and quite long aftertaste. Needs some more time.

Aubaine incroyable! 91 pts

  • France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Cask sample tasted at the domaine w/ Laurent Charvin. We tried three 100% Grenache components. Bin #10: smoky, not a lot of fruit, lots of drying tannin. Bin #5: Fragrant, much richer fruit. Bin #8: Lots of licorice and concentrated cherry fruit. It will be interesting to taste the final blend once bottled.

  • Sampled 3 different tanks. All thrree showed impressive concentration and ripe black cherry fruit. Should be a very good vintage for Charvin, and, as we learned from a bottle of 1995 CdR that Charvin opened for us, his 2005 CdR will probably age better than one might ordinarily expect... Charvin's CdR vineyard surrounds his domaine and starts just across a small road which seperates the Chateauneuf / CdR boundary.
