This has always been a very strange bottle of Pinot. Earlier on some bottles drank almost like some secondary fermentation was going on, almost spritzy. Now I am convinced it is some bacterial thing happening. It's not brett, but it is very weird, and not in a good way. Very odd flavor profile, a little vegetal, but not in a "green"/underripe way. Very perplexing, and disappointing from what was such a great producer.

Kind of feel bad drinking these because the label is gone. Super wine but I was stating straight out of an ice bucket so the palate suffered. Sweet red fruit. Yummy quality.

My final Clos Pepe I own, the cellar is now Pepe-less. This 2005 drank terrific and what impressed me was the youthful, fresh quality it continues to show after a dozen years. I didn't sense any 2ndary notes or aged qualities but instead a fresh, lightly jammy kind of taste that was delicious. Not certain this will keep aging along though as the acidity seemed light to me so my sense is to open and enjoy now, to receive the pleasure from what this wine holds.

This was not a great bottle. For the first two hours of being open, it was pretty volatile and had an acrid finish. But after mellowing out, the wine displayed ripe notes of black plum, black cherry, and sous bois. A bit one dimensional and syrupy on the palate. I have had better versions of this wine in the past; I hope it is not past its prime.

Subsequent notes on this wine from about three years ago. Deep, dark crimson in color. Forward, fragrant & attractive nose of complex, ripe fruit aromas of red cherries, strawberries & plums with overtones of spice notes of cinnamon & cloves & floral notes of roses, pepper, cola, some cedar, herbs, earthy, minerals & a hint of cedar & vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, still vibrant, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, strawberries, tart cranberries with cola, spices, herbs, minerals & a touch of creamy vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present but has the fruit & structure to possibly develop even further with additional aging. A lovely & seamless fruit-driven Pinot.

Nice notes of dark cherry, vanilla, potpourri up front; this wine is still very fruit forward for its age. Plush & well structured on the palate, with more cherry, cedar, and forest floor. Glad I have a few more – will drink over the next year.

Wow! Found in offsite storage today.. PnP with griled Alaskan sockeye Salmon grilled with wild rice and grilled zucchini and eggplant. Fresh and ready to go. Only flaw was that is was a little disjointed upon opening but it settled and was a great match with the salmon. Mellow red fruits, soft tannins, nice mid palate and just a touch of earth to accentuate the night. Home run. Drink now or hold for short term. Thank you Wes, once again you came thru.

One of the fruitier Clos Pepes I have had, even eight years out after the harvest. Juicy plums and red fruit with intensity and depth. The wine coats the mouth and persists for minutes. I am a huge fan of the Clos and this is a perfect example why--it is fruitier than I usually like, but this is just an incredible wine.... Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com
A touch of barnyard at opening but quickly dissipated. Nicely structured and entering its drinking window. Enjoy for the next few years. Classsic Clos Pepe profile with nice backone. Not as jammy as other producers but good fruit and savory earthy notes. One of the best pinots in lhe lineup. Just needs a touvh of air.

This bottle did not have any of the barnyard characteristics of the previous bottle and was loaded with some very nice fruit. There was an initial astringency on the tip of the tongue initially which seemed like a bit of effervescence, but this eventually calmed down. The result? A classic Clos Pepe. Outstanding.

Don't know if this is just bottle variation. A bit of spritz and possibly some VA at the start, which resolved quickly. Remained muted with some red fruits and savory elements of smoke and earth, but was still rather shy. Clearly not the same as the last bottle that had a bit of time left. NR

Doing very well. Nice nose of fruits and flowers. Red fruits and then bits of savory and spice developing. A touch of ETOH. A bit still fruit forward, mild tannins (though well integrated), enough acidity that it could age further though the biggest fruit (other than the 2010) of a CP pinot, though the ETOH might show more with time.

I would describe this wine is extremely expressive. Full throttled fruit from nose to palate. Showing some earthy, brambly and smoky elements too. Massive ripe fruit, but not over ripe, boozy or abusive to the palate. Medium to light bodied. The 05 is a very nice wine for those nights when you want something not so subtle.

What a memorable bottle of wine. Aromas just explode from the glass right after opening. Pure red fruit, damp earth and floral undertones. The mouthfeel is exceptional and light, but deep in flavors. Earthiness here, too, with a loooooong finish reminiscent of strawberries and cream. I wish I had a case of this left.

Really, really starting to hit its stride - lovely forest floor, cranberry, sweet cinammon and clove on the nose. Just a hint of bricking on the edges of this wine. Had it with some striped bass just out of the atlantic today - fabulous combination of sweet and acid went very well with the fish. Probably a few more years left, but this wine is really hitting on all cylinders now, so I would not wait. Bravo Wes!

Really starting to round into form. Lot of red cherry and cranberry fruit with a nice undepinning of limestome and briny earth on the nose. Very big and young still. On initial pourm a fairly big hit of alcohol, eucalyptus, black pepper and black cherry. Quite closed and tart on the palate - all cranberry and acidic structure. After some time open, the wine starts to open up a little bit - dark earth and juniper start to show up on the nose. Dark, dark black cherry on the palate. Still a baby but with the structure to be a very good wine - I'm going to wait at least another couple of years before opening my next one.

Distinct difference in my feelings about this wine between this bottle and the one from this past February. I really disliked the February bottle due to a barnyard element and I was concerned that I would find the same again, especially owning a mag of this wine, I was not thrilled. However, I have to say, this is a much better bottle and there is no trace of brett or barnyard. In fact, if you look at Richard Jenning's recent note, he too mentions this attribute but I don't find it here. Lots of silky cherry, acidity and a long finish..........and with a full day to let the wine open, as is customary for most of my TNs, a better view of the wine now. Black cherry, raspberry, cranberry and a hint of mineral offer a very nice drink now. There is some ripeness, through the black cherry feel, in the wine but it adds polish and some effusiveness to the overall sensation, along with even some shades of truffle and mushroom. So much better than the February bottle, thank god. Note--aging potential? Very good here, say 1-2 years more. The wine has enough acidity and structure to cruise right along and I would say peak in 2011.

Very nice Santa Rita Hills Pinot, light color (ruby) considering comparison of my experience with other SRH Pinot's. Floral, deep complex nose and flavors (cherry, spice) yet refined, nice oak tone without tasting like a tree. Drinking nicely now and feels like it will hold for several more years. Finish a tad dry/crisp but lingers in a good way. I'd say more Burgundian than California in style (good thing in this particular case it seems).

Ed Kurtzman Dinner - His Favs and His (Casa Murray): Initially some funk, then dark cranberry and Christmas spice. Really nice balance and mouth feel with a soft mid palate. The fruit wasn't real expressive today and on the tight narrow side but this wine clearly has some potential. Might have been my favorite Pinot on the night.

Ed Kurtzman Comes To Dinner (The Murray Casa): My first impression last night was a barnyard note on the nose. During the dinner, I noted the wine to be a bit austere and tight, not showing for me. All of that with the nose left me disappointed. Retasted the wine again this AM. The barnyard note is still there, within the palate, too. However, the fruit has perked up a lot so the air overnight surely helped. Plum and blueberry. I liked the wine much better this AM but the b/yard part is not working for me.

Honestly, I was expecting much more. Took a couple of hours to open up, but even when it did, I didn't get the nose and taste that many others have. This was muted to start, but after a while, started to show some dark cherries along with Cola and a touch of oak. Medium bodied wine that was concentrated with the cherries predominating, a long finish that was somewhat alcoholic. NIce balance to this, but there was really nothing that stood out. Good wine, but have had better for the price.

So I opened this and poured a small glass and then let the bottle sit. I was having company for dinner so I went off to cook. Turns out our guest brought a bottle of wine they wanted to try so I re-corked this baby. So my note is from the next evening. Just a note from memory. The aromatics were powerful and primary. Lots of berries with a small touch of smoke. The palate was ripe and fruity. The wine is still so primary. Tons of fruit yet not out of balance. The wine cut right through with our meal and the acid gave it a lingering finish. Very nice. Everyone at the table enjoyed this. Works well now if you like big fruit. I am going to let my bottles rest as I think this wine will integrate and be more interesting with another 3-5 years of bottle time.

Saw on the website that Wes recommended trying one now so I popped one open. It was very enjoyable - nice balance and acidity. Seemed a bit muted and expect it will only improve so I'll sit on the others for a year or so.

Family Winemakers of California (Pasadena, CA): A very pretty Pinot. Delicate notes strawberries, raspberries, rose petals, red clay, and crushed minerals. Good acidity. Not as flashy as the 2006, but I actually preferred this one by a decent margin. 91-92

CSCA: VMuch more fruity, richer than 06, complex, concetrated but with great bal. Very nice stuff.
