Wonderful fraicheur in this beautiful red Hermitage. And although relatively young, it is in its drinking window. Not a very outspoken bouquet, but convincing on the palet: Rhone but its most subtle version. In general I'm not a huge Rhone fan due to the often rather overtly herbal profile but Chave is an enlightened version of all that. Quite dry for a red, but its fraicheur makes this a truly nice wine.
While this Chave is ready today it for sure has has plenty of years a head: easily another 5-7!

Based on the tasting notes, I thought it would be a good time to try this wine and I took it to share with a friend at a restaurant. Half the bottle was decanted while we ate starters.
The nose was already quite something and the palate didn't disappoint. All in balance with this wine, power and elegance. Spicey and gamey notes. My first Hermitage by Chave and a great, great wine that of course will evolve but is delicious to drink now. Actually, I think I'd have preferred drinking the wine on its own.
Thank you to all CTers for their comments that hinted that this wine was ready to go.

96-97. The nose is very shy. Not the most expressive wine at first but it has so much depth and finesse. Lovely fruits in a silky mouth with perfect balance. Long polished finish. I would drink it sooner than later.

Lovely, expressive nose with beautiful black fruit, cedar, peppered meat and fine spices. Fresh, structured and very intense on the palate. Great persistance on the peppery finish. Offering a lot of drinking pleasure now but really worth cellaring for longer. Definite room for further improvement.
WSET Notes:
Deep ruby.
Pronounced on the nose with blackberry, black cherry, clove, cedar, black pepper, leather, meat and earth. Developing.
Pronounced and dry on the palate. Full body, high alcohol, high tannins, high acidity, long finish.
Can drink now but has potential for ageing.

This wine is exquisite and you wouldn't know it from the muted nose. On the palate, there is tremendous concentration of dark fruit layered with notes of licorice, spice and smoke. This is full without being heavy and the tannins are so smooth and silky. There was a lot of sediment in the bottle and while it can easily age longer, it's drinking wonderfully now.
Holiday Champagne Gala (Park Ridge Country Club): Late night, small glass. So much intense fruit, so much spice, just still firm and brooding. Needs at least another 5+ years, but certainly great potential here.

J.L. Chave Hermitage vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Double decanted some hours before. Clear, deep purple ruby color. Fine red fruit, some speck and smoky herbaceous notes in the nose. On the palate fresh, rather cool and lean. Some barn notes, high tannin and acidity. Long and complex. Still too young and with good potential for another decade. 92++

Nose has lots of jasmine and a tiny touch of funk for complexity; quite charming and deep. The really stunning part was the palate. Gorgeous tannin, insanely fine and dominant but somehow balanced. The sensation was of the wine somehow disappearing in the mouth, hugging you with its tannic grip as it disappeared. It was just lovely to drink.

A top notch, multi-faceted wine that is barely hitting it's stride. A bit of new oak enhances the smokey, gamey flavors without overwhelming the dried herbs de Provence. Nothing in excess or overpowering, fantastic balance of intensity, flavor, complexity, and structure.

Off the wine list at Cru Uncorked in Cleveland. Despite being a big Rhine fan it’s rare for me to order this but pricing was compelling and I was with a friend who I just knew would love it. It didn’t disappoint. The nose prob better than the rest of it and the nose was really something the gamey, pan-dripping, bacon style. My knock on Chase has always been it lacks that structure/precision and that’s fair here too but the rest of it is pretty great.

Another lost Friday afternoon gathering - mostly French (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Youthful expressive nose displaying pure sweet black fruit, blackberry, blackberry jelly, licorice, smoke, black pepper, dark spices and limestone. Very good concentration, layers upon layers of cool yet rich black fruit, silky and weightless, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long pure black fruit driven finish with smoke and licorice at the end. This is a classic youthful, almost primary, Chave. Just like the 14 red Brugndy, it is very pure. Lovely wine that will age gracefully.

Syrah Blind Tasting - June 2021: This pours medium ruby in the glass. The nose is brooding and complex, deep and refined. It shows classy notes of espresso, gamey animal fur, black cherry, black currant, floral notes of roses in bloom, white pepper, a touch of ginger infused beef broth. The palate is quite silky showing medium minus tannin and medium acid with lovely dark fruit. I have no doubt in my mind that this is just giving us an early glimpse of what it has in store, yet is already showing it's pedigree with complexity and refinement. I think this is a wine I'd like even more in a few years though it's not at all in a bad spot today.

Rhône Variety Tasting hosted by TCWC (Virtual): Red fruit leads the way, along with tapenade, iron and a terrific wild, feral quality. I could smell this all night long- I love it. Full-bodied, with firm but fine tannins. Flavors of red and black fruit and tapenade. Long finish, accented by a bit of spice. All class. The wine of the night for both of us. 95+ pts.

Rhône Variety Tasting hosted by TCWC (Virtual): Blind. Dark crimson color. Aromas of clay, black fruit, something a bit wild/feral, with background tapenade and herbal, almost garrigue-like qualities. Wonderful complexity and nuance. Medium- to full-bodied with dark fruit, pine, tapenade, herb and spice flavors. Has some tannin to integrate. This has power, depth and balance. Gorgeous. 94-95 pts.
I kept going back and forth here- Chave to Cayuse to Chave to Cayuse to Chave to, finally, Colgin. Domino thought this might have been the CndP due to the garrigue-like notes that kept poking through.

Rhône varietals with TCWC (Chicago, IL): Next to the Cayuse, the restraint here is evident, but while the fruit isn't anywhere as exuberant as the Cayuse, there is just as much material here, diversified between the fruit, bacon fat, and olive elements. A little reduced. This doesn't quite have the same intensity and weight as the brilliant 2015 or 2016, and in fact has a coolness that reminds me a bit of the enchanting 2004. Minerally and bright, with fruit that sits more on the red side of the spectrum. While this is too young to hit a peak like the 2004, I feel optimistic this will evolve into something like that. Chave is truly the King of the Hill.
Everything young Hermitage should be, even in a so-called off vintage. Loads of pepper, smoke, charcoal, and quartz-like minerality. Also showing pleasant saline elements. Medium to medium plus acid, light tannin. It needs a few more years to unwind. Even still, not a wine I would hold beyond 2027-2030.
As of now, the wine has two detractions, one will likely resolve, at least to an extent, whereas the other seems questionable. The oak treatment comes off fairly heavy-handed for this 'light' vintage. The 14.5 abv is quite obtrusive, masking some of the wine's nuance. Difficult to understand such high alcohol in this restrained vintage. 93-94.

$250 on the menu in Rosemary Beach FL. Incredible wine. I could hardly believe my eyes when I looked at the price. Fantastic JLC for such a young vintage.
Another "off" vintage, starts with a light nose, medium depth, more savory dark cherry, almost black fruit, quite reserved and brooding. Definitely backward and a little hard to judge at this young stage, but could be a real sleeper that unfurls to an amazing wine in 20+ years.

Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Tasting (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Surprisingly, very drinkable for such a young vintage of Chave. Became more expressive throughout the evening. Dark color, with aromas of dark and red fruits, fresh violets, leather, and Asian spices. Full and lush on the palate. Tannins are nicely integrated, and there was no drying or fatiguing at all. Opened this out of curiosity to check on the vintage. Medium-dark purple, shiny, pointing to good acidity. The nose is still discrete and opened up a bit more in the glass. Aromas of smoke, meat, dark fruit, clean and ripe. The palate is medium bodied, not a blockbuster like 2005 but so elegant, good stuffing, great, fresh finish. I like these cooler vintages for their drinkability. The tannins are polished, can be drunk younger while you wait until vintages like 2010, 2015 come round. Another great showing of one of my all time favorite wines. 96-97

Perfumed aromas with rich red fruits and new leather - lovely. Nice depth and ripeness, yet great balance and texture. Great balance and nice upfront dark red cherry fruit. Delicious with a nice chew, a good one to lay down. Quite nice. Surprisingly approachable.
