1st half bottle from a case bought after a 2018 tasting of 40 2016's in which I rated this top. Big nose of blackcurrant as I opened the bottle, then some undergrowth which has now gone leaving clean blackcurrant, pencil shavings and cedar. Loads of fruit and soft tannins and a very long finish with a touch of bitterness. Fully mature in 375.

Wanted to see, if it is still closed at the moment. Even after a 4 hours decant it just opens up slowly. Dense purple/red color. Fine but reserved nose of wet stone and cassis, even some bell pepper coming through. On the palate there is also plenty of fruit, especially cassis, but it is obviously still much too young. Powdery tannins and just the right amount of acidity make it very drinkable today, but I suggest to let it sleep for 5-10 years to get all out of it. Big potential 93+++ pts.

With a three-hour decant, this was surprisingly approachable for such a young Bordeaux. Medium bodied, with a good balance between the Cab and Merlot. Dark plum and blackberry fruit shows through, with notes of chocolate and licorice. Juicy with smooth tannins.

40th anniversary tasting (L'Esprit du Vin - Axelborg): My notes from this fantastic gigantic tasting are in general extremely short (because of the many wines) but with ratings. We spent a whole day tasting and tasting quality wines.
This wine: tasted 2017, 2016, 2011: - 2017: 93 The best of them, savoury style, cassis, long finish. - 2016: 92. Closed at the moment. - 2011: 92+. Clearly green bell pepper, cassis, high tannins.

left-bank Bordeaux tasting – six wines/six vintages (K&L Redwood City): deep purplish garnet in the glass, the nose is a bit reticent at first. once it opens, it is delightful… blackcurrants, rose petals, sandalwood, black tea, cigar box. in the mouth it is ample, with a juicy, fresh feel. the same notes from the nose parade thru the palate backed by still grippy though fine tannins.
it is obviously quite young, but even now there is a purity and effortless elegance about this wine that is remarkable: everything is in great balance. it should be interesting to see how it develops… there is quite a bit there to go some distance, but already a lot of finesse.

Getting better. Stored in closed basement cellar at 62 degrees, 60% humidity. Dark and quiet. Cabernet dominant tonight. No sharp edges. Smooth. Brilliant dark ruby. Softer than expected. Really nice. Very happy to have this wine! Nothing to criticize. Just a really great wine.

Fruit forward. Of course still too young, but mainly from a flavor development sense rather than harsh tannins or aggressive oak. Still has tannins and will age, but just more approachable now. More new world, plush in style, but not ott extracted like some Aussie or Cali wines can be. Good. I'm looking forward to where this will be in a decade.

Sample from J. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of grilled capsicum bell peppers, cedarwood, blackcurrant, blackberries, bit of cocoa powder and chocolate. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of cocoa powder, chocolate with some milkiness, cedar, blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, grilled capsicum. Long finish. Good quality Bordeaux. But too young to appreciate anything more than all the parts. Will be better with another 10+ years. Good but nothing really distinguishes this from other well-made Cabernet blends at this point in time.

No rating, Somewhat underwhelmed. After a few days to unfurl and plenty of time to breathe, I'm not sure what to think. Some green and white pepper (which I liked) but strawberry syruppy (which I didn't like) and not a lot of character. Very medium intensity and indeed somewhat thin in body. Mid and high palate resonance. I want to give it an even 90, it's pretty good but not exciting. Maybe it needed another 24 hrs of O2? Maybe 10 more years in the bottle?
Still quite open here and the fruit is very showing off. Tannins are present but not too imposing and the wine had nice acidity to boot. Seemed much better than the 2015 that I had at the same time. Really young and needs a decade at least to show the potential but if in a hurry does not kill to open one and enjoy with a good decant

Gorgeous deep nose, with plum, strawberry, smoke and exotic wood. Just a touch of graphite, too. Wonderful quality of fruit and such gorgeous acidity. Rounded, supple, with plenty of drive and little pinpricks of spice and tart pomegranate. Super long, arresting, red-fruited finish. Still rather tannic, but so delicious already. Yum - I loved this EP and I love it now.

Let’s keep this simple. I like the wine, everything a left bank Bordeaux should be. It’s not overly Cabernet and all the parts come together very well. It has great mouth feel and a finish that lingers a long time. It’s simply very young here. Drank half the bottle over several hours and it kept getting better. Drank the other half the next evening and it was much better. I’ll give it another 5 or probably better yet 10 years. Cheers

Wow! Black and opaque in the glass with purple froth. The bouquet has a core of ripe black plum with trimmings of spice, raspberry, charcoal, flowers, dark chocolate, menthol and cigar box. Use a good glass and savour the aromas from the empty glass. This is a magical wine. It is ripe and beautifully balanced. The length is impressive. It has a softness that I associate with Margaux. It has an extroverted feminine nature that is consistent with Margaux. This wine is a contender for a 100 score. Estimated drinking window 2030 to 2060. Best after 45 minutes in the decanter. Riedel Bordeaux glasses. Drinking temperature 17 deg C. Wow!

I tried a 5 hr slow ox and it just was not showing on the palate at all. The nose meanwhile was stunning. On the nose it was cocoa, ripe crushed blackberries and so dense. The palate was a bit disjointed and tasted much thinner than the nose. This was quite similar to 2017 but with a bit more concentration. I have the feeling this would come together on the second day but did not get to test this.

A Coravin sample of 2016 and 2017. Aromas of ripe plummy fruit. Power combined with elegance, Dry tannins but very fine. Very good balance with uplifting and energizing acidity balancing the blackcurrant fruit and tannin. Long finish. Wouldn't drink it now but curiosity got the better of me. Could be closing down as I remember it being more accessible last time round. 93 but potential for a bit higher.

Deep purple colour. Pronounced nose with black pepper, tobacco, blackcurrant, cedar and vanilla. Pronounced taste of blackcurrant, black pepper, vanilla, cedar and tobacco. Long and dry finish. High acidity. High tannins. Medium body. A very good Margaux that could be stored for decades with great potential. Goes well with beef or lamb.

Consumed over 5 hours. Initial nose shows ripe and dense black and blue fruits, toasty oak and framboise. Palate also initially velvlety slowing evolving to show more gravelly and earthy overtones. Lead and cigar box as well. Quite good but note getting the 95 plus points feeling.

From Coravin, 1st Pour - The nose is refreshing with more red fruits than floral notes, but not as weightless as the 2015. The palate has red fruits with hints of black fruits and all the components working well together, simila to 2015. It is light to medium bodied. The finish is medium to long, with a slight bitterness from the tannins as well, but not as much as the 2015. I think today, the 2015 drinks better than the 2016 for me. I would cellar the 2016, while I would gladly open a 2015 if ever. I did a side by side tasting with the 2015, so check out my notes on the 2015 as well if ever.

Decanted 7 hrs and then drank over 3 days. As with most users on CT, this was showing a lot of primary fruit from the get go, mostly in the dark plum realm with a little black currant showing near the finish. Elegant though, and light on its feet, very fresh too. Changed relatively little over three days so the softness of tannin, or at least perceived, should be of little concern. Excellent RS.

Decanted 2h. Wonderfully sexy nose of baking spices, mixed berries but predominantly blue fruit and a bit of wood. On the palate fresh acidity, sweet and juicy showing a great balance. This makes you long for more with every sip. Tastes next to the 1996 which is probably in its absolute prime today but still no match. Having said that, both pale against the 2018 barrel sample I had!

I opened the first bottle of a case to see what all the fuss is about. There's no smoke without fire - this is a fascinating bottle of wine. The super plush blueberry, lavender, ganache notes on the nose carry through to the palate, where there's a refreshing thyme/rosemary herbaceousness as well. I'm intrigued (maybe perplexed is more apt) - this has such an intense nose and great depth of flavor on the palate, yet the tannins are unbelievably soft. I wonder if it has the legs to go as long as some other 16s will - but then again, a lack of tannin was supposedly the "flaw" of the 82s when they were tasted young...

We've been looking forward to tasting this wine since we picked it up several weeks ago. Dark garnet purple color, once opened the bouquet was wonderful. Flowers, tobacco, black currant. Medium to full body, smooth and almost silky. Young. No sharp edges. Solid, tight. Over 6 hours the bouquet opened a bit more. As tight at 6 hours as it was at 30 minutes. Just a very young and potentially great wine. This is a wine to age and track its development. Looking forward to comparing it to the 2015, which we found during a recent trip out of town.

Tighter and classic aromas with lovely redberry fruit, stables, wet leather, wood and clear minerality. Good full bodied wine with very good mouthfeel of juicy blackberries, blackcurrants and ripe blueberries. Neat salts and leather are marked on a very long and excellent finish. Good acidity and appropriate tannin structure for the wine. Great wine. 95 points.

Still young, but you can find hints of tobacco leaf, truffle, herbs and flowers poke through the ripe, red and dark red fruits. The wine is concentrated, silky, uplifting and generous, as well as long, fresh pure. This wine will need 12-15 years before it really starts opening and showing its true essence.

Tasted over three days. Another example of the 2016 overhype.
The bouquet and profile feature fresh fruit, considerable oak, and not much else. Also, this is all but placeless, with two experienced double-blind tasters taking it for a New World Cabernet Sauvignon based blend. It showed best on the third day, suggesting the possibility of marginal improvement.
Like so many 2016 Bordeaux, this lacks the requisite structure for long-term cellaring and the middle is constituted by little more than fresh, somewhat extracted, fruit. No reticence, fully approachable, and thus little promise. Drink by 2028-2030. 91-92.
Light decant No, this is not infanticide. This wine is absolutely delicious. Like the prior post-this wine is "seductive and sexy" with elegance and power. Getting into tasting descriptions really would just cause me to say I missed something. For the record, I'd say this wine is an absolute bargain.
I'd give this a near perfect score 98-99

One of the most seductive and sexiest wines of the tasting… Super perfumed and sexy notes of sweet oak, spices, crushed violets, cassis/black currant, some graphite and pomegranate. It's medium-full bodied, with medium-high tannin that is exceptionally silky and medium-high acidity. Long finish with plenty of character. A super pretty and perfumed Rauzan-Ségla that has the structure to age too. The whole package.

Tasted during SPECS Bordeaux tasting in Houston, my personal favorite Margaux wine from the tasting, great acid and fruit with a very elegant style. I feel the style of wine has regained its senses from the also excellent but very different 15 vintage which I feel was pushed a bit too far. 92 Points today with possible 3 additional points at its peak.

Depth of flavor, complexity, energy and concentration are easy to see. And so is the gorgeous, floral, red berry, licorice, earth and gentle smoke tones. Silky, sweet and fresh, this is going to need 12-15 years before it really starts opening.

At a tasting last month where we compared over 40 2016s. When tasted en primeur I had an off bottle and didn't score it. This time one of the top wines of the event. Excellent all round with huge length. I'm looking to buy.
Concentrated, fresh, lively, clean and pure, with loads of floral, earth, tobacco and black cherry nuances. The wine is multi layered, full-bodied, silky and vibrant, requiring 12-15 years in the cellar or more to show its best.

Deep in color with violets and licorice that take no effort to find, this wine is luxurious and concentrated and feels like ripe black fruits polished with velvet. There is a sweetness combined with a quintessence of fruit that will send your mind to Bordeaux no matter where you take your first sip. The wine was produced from blending 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and is aged in 60% new, French oak barrels for 18 months before bottling. The harvest took place from September 20 to October 4 for the Merlot and from October 10 to October 15 for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine represents only 50% of the harvest.

Paid $99.99. Even though it is very young, it is full bodied. It will be a great wine in the future.

Drink by 2028-2030. 91-92.

No, this is not infanticide. This wine is absolutely delicious.
Like the prior post-this wine is "seductive and sexy" with elegance and power. Getting into tasting descriptions really would just cause me to say I missed something.
For the record, I'd say this wine is an absolute bargain.
I'd give this a near perfect score

Tasted @ bigger Bordeaux 2016 arrivage tasting.

UNION DES GRANDS CRUS DE BORDEAUX 2016 VINTAGE SAN FRANCISCO. (Metreon, San Francisco, Ca.): UNION DES GRANDS CRUS DE BORDEAUX 2016 VINTAGE SAN FRANCISCO. Nose of rich black fruit, same on the palate, big body, soft tannins, should be silky tannins in 4 years, mouth filling fruit, lovely fruit, rich fruit, delicious tasting, long, flavorful finish. Best Margaux tasted today-slightly liked better than the Chateau Brane-Cantenac.

Zachys Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2016 (New York City, NY): Wow this was the best of both worlds in the Margaux wine sampling tonight. It was balanced with tannins in check and a vivid acidity. Just felt young and yet ready to drink.

2016 Union Des Grand Crus de Bordeaux (NYC): A perfumed nose and palate of red fruits and pink flower. Of concern is a mid-palate that is lean and found in a lot of the Margauxs this year.

At a tasting last month where we compared over 40 2016s.
When tasted en primeur I had an off bottle and didn't score it.
This time one of the top wines of the event. Excellent all round with huge length. I'm looking to buy.
