Red and black fruits with some tannins on the back end. It's not as rustic as some vintages, but it's by no means glossy. On pop and pour it seemed like it needed to shed some baby fat, but scarcely an hour later it leaned out. Further aeration brought out a faint mint note. Enjoyable, but I never found a second gear.

At its peak. Perfumed nose, light body, typical elements with maybe tannins -- subdued otherwise -- not as polished as expected. I was happy to see Bordeaux in that more modern, post-Parker style.

I bought some bottles of this wine almost two years ago and never tried a bottle. It got a little lost. I liked it.....a good value. I decanted it for 2 hours. I see that cellartracker.com reviewers have a somewhat divergent view of the wine. Perhaps that is related to the length of the decant.

This is a pretty solid bottle of Bordeaux. Perhaps a little more modern styled than earlier vintages, though no where near as rich, ripe and hot as the Lillian Ladouys we had with it. I much preferred this one.

Given the reputation of this cru bourgeois as well as of the vintage, I was rather disappointed. This is a sound robust claret with savoury fruit, some earthiness and decent structure but in a somewhat austere vein, lacking in charm and a bit short. Maybe it needs more age but I doubt if it will ever be a real winner. Quite good but I don't think I'll buy more even at its current price of c.€15.
This has turned a corner. Still on the rustic side with some coarse tannins but rather fantastic black fruits with a bit of bdx funk. Traditionalists will enjoy. Drink or hold.

Ann opened this last night with some girlfriends. Shows some spice on the nose. Still very primary, showing red fruits, and a nice dose of acid. Not very complex, but this is enjoyable.

First bottle of an OWC purchase from many years ago.
Nose of cherries, a hint of graphite, peppers, and licorice. Quite generic and modern. So light bodied that it won’t really scratch a Bordeaux or Cabernet itch. A simple everyday wine, but nothing distinctive. At this price, you could do worse, I suppose.

Lanessan's 2016 is a deep ruby blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged for 12 months in French oak (33% new). From a bottle that was Vinturi-decanted and serially tasted over six hours, it offers an aromatic and flavor payload of Morello cherries, blackcurrants, mulling spices, cedar and tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied and tart, it delivers flavors congruent with the aromas, adding notes of toasted oak and savory herbs. The alcohol (listed as 13.5%) is imperceptible, while the tannins are plentiful, grippy and pervasive on the mid-palate and medium-length finish. This modest château's effort in 2016 is commendable. That said, it is still somewhat angular and lacks charm even after seven years. I would favor giving it another 2-3 years in the cellar, although there are no guarantees that this one will ever be a raving beauty. If you choose to pop the cork now, give it at least two hours in decanter. Drink 2025-2036.

Imagine some bats and raven flying around the castle on the label and you have an image of the haunted house from Robert Wise’s classic horror movie from 1963 “The Haunting” :-) This is a popular and widely available Haut-Médoc wine for Bordeaux enthousiasts who are fond of a classic wine with serious aging potential, quite a lot of tannines and a reasonable price (I paid 13,50€, a bargain!). This vintage is much more accessible and the better so for my personal taste. Nice youthful, medium deep color with still a lot of purple. On the nose and palate abundant black currants, still some new oak, relatively soft tannines and refreshing acidity. No great complexity and a rather short final but very pleasant. Can be enjoyed now but also be kept for another 5 years although I don’t think it will improve much. I prefer this vintage over the 2015. Diam cork.

Color: medium concentration, no evolution Nose: this shouts out BDX. Dark deep concentrated blue fruits with a hint of cigar box, but far away. Taste: very compact initially. Did not decant, should have probably, but the rest is for tomorrow. Tannins and acid need to melt and integrate. Now more a food wine. I enjoyed it. Curious how this will taste tomorrow. Bottle 2 of 6 which is good news. Unbeatable P/Q

Decanted 90 mins before drinking . Drank this with roast lamb. What could go wrong? Nothing! It was a delight. It may be just into the drinking window, but this was delightful. Sure, the tannins could do with a little more time in the bottle but all classic wood shavings coffee, winter fruits etc were there. An excellent wine and I would recommend it.

Nose: Ripe cassis, dark raspberries, frangipane (almond pastry cream), dry tree bark; on day two, the nose shifts more earthy, like flowers and herbs in sweet mud. Palate: Very tart blackberries (which mellows on day two), wood notes, fine grained tannins, long finish that holds a smokey warmth to it. This wine has it all, and for the price it's astounding; all it lack is some body and the fruit is a little tart for my taste, but with a couple more years (as day two might suggest?) this characteristic might improve.

Medium reddish-purple garnet in color; almost opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, cassis & plums with earthy/dusty & herbal overtones, some floral notes, herbs, spices, minerals, & a slight hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with herbs, minerals, spices & a hint of oak. Lingering finish. Quite accessible at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with a few years of additional aging.

Tasted head to head with the 2015. Both were very nice, this was bigger, more structured, heavier tannins, longer finish. I liked better on day 1, but second day the fruit faded and bitter tannins were more dominant.

Garrigue and leather nose. Tart blue fruits, with dark cocoa, coffee, olive, sage, and a drying finish from the merlot. This is a great QPR, but needs more time in bottle, or a 24-hr decant. I'd not touch this for a couple of years.

88/89. Decent a bit unknit. Has aromas of sandstone, iron, cedar+ coffee infused plums, raspberries+cassis. Its youthful medium bodied chewy well oaked blue, black+red fruits palate ends mediumish a bit tannic and fresh. Needs 3/4hrs+ aeration. 13.5%. Lay down 5-10 years. Ok value at 17 Euros.

Nice, pretty classic mid-weight claret here, pure cassis and berry fruit with some sweet oak spice and brown sugar/raisin notes that should integrate with time. Good tannic structure. Just needs time. Give at least 5 more years. Rating: 89+

This bottle was in its very early maturity but was still a day two wine. Perhaps a bit on the simple side but very balanced, poised, and correct, with leather on the nose and black over red fruits. Very good concentration. Very well made and enjoyable. 13.5% ABV (very good; above average; distinguished; compelling/***/16/90)

This is settling down and opening up a bit, quite fruit forward and dense with air, blackberry, mocha, spice. This feels like it will be nice over the next 10 years or so. A bit more clean and modern than '14.

Good dark red colour with black/red core. Typical smoky, dark fruited nose with a touch of herbs and nuts. Palate is medium bodied, the structure shows thru more than the fruit. There is medium tannins and acidity, the wine is quite linear with firm fruit and some tobacco and smoky oak. I would like more richness and intensity in the middle palate. It is an old fashioned style of Bordeaux - which isn't a bad thing in itself - but it is a bit monolithic and simple.

This is quite a structured wine with all the right elements and years of life ahead of it. Maybe not so strict as the 2010, but not as open as the 2014 and certainly not opulent like the 2015.

Ann liked this more than me. Both this and the 2015 seem to be lacking the character earlier vintages show. Still, this is well made, with fine, silky tannin. Plush and soft with and black fruit. Moderate acidity. Some oak spice, and mocha accents. Easy going. I may have guessed a merlot dominant right bank wine if tasting blind. First of a case, so I hope it develops with time.

Lanessan was normally impenetrable when young in the 90's and 00's. This is very young PnP. Has floral aromas of iron infused plums, mint, raspberries and cassis. Its medium bodied pretty closed grippy and four square freshly fruited leanish stoney/ironeyblue and red fruits palate ends with a medium length and with some nice a bit rustic and chewy drying tannin. Lay down 10 years+. Needs 3 hrs+ aeration. Decent value at 16 Euros. This could be a 90 with more aeration.
Savoury and mineral. Bacon fat, red plums and blackberries with dried bay leave and clove defined the balanced initial impression. Smell almost like a robust rustic meat stew. Palate is quite choppy, there are some degree of roughness at the edges which need time to smoothen. Full-bodied. Dry fruits and minerality followed through from entry to a finish filled with notes of eucalyptus, hints of bitter tannins and gravel stones. A few years of aging will develop that bold country characteristics with better finesse.

This has calmed down in a nice way. Green notes subdued and I find that balance now is easier to judge. For the money this has to be a steal if you like no nonsense BDX. Start drinking. Not sure the fruit will keep for long term

Quite good and still holding pretty much to its release form without noticeable evolution. The bouquet, freshness, easy fruit, good cut and neat finish exude, for lack of a better term, class. Blue-blood. Very St. Julien, which is just across the canal. I bought a case to match off against a case of 2016 Ch. Lagrange, just to see over time how much difference there really is between close vineyards in at the Haut-Medoc-St. Julien boundary, and whether there is any value in paying an extra $25 a bottle for the Lagrange versus the Lanessan. Will be fun even if it turns out not to be informative. They are both nice wines in this vintage.

Riper and more accessible than Lanessan of old, but still fresh and fairly classic medoc. Ample powdery tannins, cassis, taut blue/black fruit, and a fistful of crushed gravel. A bit hollow on the mid-palate and short on the finish, but feels like it’ll fill out with a few years of rest. 89++
Day 2, is a bit more austere and he clammed up a bit.
Also noteworthy that it’s bottled under DIAM, which is still a bit rare in Bordeaux?

I've had three bottles of this since release and it has been maddingly inconsistent. Fortunately this one was promising, with good structure and clear blackberry, spice, and tobacco notes, much more in line with my first bottle. (the second bottle was sweet and overdone). Opened nicely over a couple days. Based on this showing it will age nicely over the next 15 years.

I've had two more half-bottles of this since my first one in June. These two were not as good as the first. Now it just seems like a plain wine that lacks a center. It's okay, but I would not re-buy.
Reductive at the opening, the nose finally came alive after a few hours in the decanter with pretty floral notes. But the promise stayed there since the whole subsequent degustation has been a disappointment. While being a bit stern on the palate with graphite, some greeness, earth and licorice but not much more, the wine falls shortly after having spread its admittedly well extracted sandy tannins. Frankly, I doubt about the future of this wine so much it cruelly lacks fruit and flesh. Besides, it seems like the blend has been sank in flows of sulphite, what is a shame given the wine structure and - fortunately - quite rare at Bordeaux for my sensitivity. In the same price category, I definitely prefer Sénéjac (brighter, but more creamy and much more fruit forward), and even better Charmail (darker, more complex and very Médoc profile) in the same vintage. 88+

Got a glass here now and allowed to open for an hour. The nose is slightly floral and woodsy, no hint of earth. it swirls on the palate as a medium body wine with a good amount of acidity and a minor dark fruit component. It may need more time to open, but as it does open, it seems to get thinner and and less dimension. It doesn't strike me as a great wine, but not a bad one either. I won't repurchase.

I can't add much more to the notes that others have written. This is a solid Medoc, with some broad shoulders due to the tannins and medium weight and complexity. Certainly worth the $20 I paid for it. Since it's a 2016, even after decanting, it's simply too young. I think with a few years I could rate this a 90, as in its youth, still fragmented and somewhat awkward. But still, a good everyday drinker.

From a 1/2 bottle. This is a really enjoyable Bordeaux. It has heft. On the heavier side. More earthy than fruity, although it's not at all funky. Save it for red meat dishes.

Decanted an hour before serving. Deep dark purple color. Intriguing nose of blackberry jam and blueberry pie. Medium to full bodied with strong, grippy tannins that more or less dominated everything. Only really flavor that was detectable underneath the tannins was clay until about 3 1/2 hours in when some red fruits finally started to emerge. Think this needs a few more years.

(5/12/20) My last bottle of this showed a lot of rotten egg stink on PnP. There was none of that with this one, just rich fruit on the nose and palate, good balance, very good concentration, good intensity, dusty tannins, and a nice medium-long finish; 13.5% abv. (***/15.5/90)

I do not drink lots of Cabernet so I am not the best judge (but I do love a good bottle of Bordeaux with some age). I found this relatively pretty up front- but not that interesting. Not to much it. Lacks substance and verve but at $18 totally fine. Happy to have to left for when I have people for dinner who do not like pinot and want some more wine in their glass.
(2/16/20) This bottle was a little rotten-egg stinky on PnP, so I went on to something else. After four hours in the glass, however, the smell was still there, although greatly reduced. I almost sent the bottle down the drain; I’m glad I didn’t. I vacuum sealed it and put it in the refrigerator and then decanted it for three hours the next evening. After that, all was well.
All the rotten-egg odor was gone, leaving a nice, if fairly subdued and simple nose of red and dark fruits. The wine was well concentrated and had pleasant, simple fruits on the palate, as well as ripe, approachable tannins, very good balance, and a lively acidity that gave it good intensity and a nice, very long, mouth-coating finish.
All in all, this was a good, approachable bottle of young Haut Medoc that was held back in the end only by the relatively weak nose. This was the case with my last bottle of the 2016 from this producer, but the air time this bottle received may be what made the nose on this bottle a little better than my last bottle; 13.5% abv. (***/15.5/90)

A racey bottle, ample acidity throughout. A minute later, as things settle out, delicious ripe red fruits appear and hang for a good long while followed by significant tannins in varying degrees of resolution
All in all a fine bottle, an especially fine value.

(1/29/20) Very nice right from PnP. It was very primary at this stage, of course, and straightforward, but it had very good concentration and balance, medium acidity, and lots of silky, ripe tannins. More open and a bit less strict after 24 hours under vacuum seal in the fridge. Blended from 50% cab, 35% merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5% cab franc; 13.5 abv. (***/15.5/89)

90min decant. Exploratory opening of this very young bottle. Nose: lots of oak, overpowers the fruit but understandable given its youth. Palate: nice dark fruit, grippy tannins, oaky but again, it's young. Good for the price ($20) – have another bottle and will buy more to age.

The wine was a deep garnet color. The legs were medium. There was moderate sediment in the bottle. Aromas and flavors matched the bottle's description fairly well. Took a while to decant to really come alive (~75 minutes). Once decanted, it was pretty good!

Nice fruit on the nose but it’s another “hollow” 2016. Where is the Bordeaux substance? Yes there is some tannin to develop and it is obviously still young but there’s not enough oomph there to fill me with confidence for the future. Hoping I’m pleasantly surprised in a few years time when I open another one.
I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that 2015 was a far superior vintage to 2016 for Bordeaux.

Medium/full bodied with a touch of oak, you also find black currant, cedar and tobacco notes. On the palate, the wine is round, juicy and fresh with a sweet, red fruit core of fruit from start to finish. There is some tannin giving this structure, so while it offers charm, it is going to need some cellaring before it hits its peak..

Consistent with previous note. Pretty fruit up front, the result of high extraction, which becomes all too obvious at the back, on account of the astringently gritty finish. Other than fruit, there is not much to it. The middle especially lacks substance and verve. 87-88.
Another 2016 Left Bank Bordeaux plagued by the absence of mid palate substance and power. Certainly fruity, generally placeless, and showing out of balance alcohol.

Great old school bdx. Also big step up from ‘15 which I found disappointing (but haven’t revisited). Quite aromatic for a young bdx.Leafy herbal note highlights the nose and palate. Black and blue fruited, palate more lean than plush. Tannins present but fine, with the fruit in front for now. Moderate length finish. Approachable now but plenty of structure for aging. Solid QPR.

Decanted for 3 hours. Remains extremely tight on the nose, there is a faint tinge of leather lingering in the background and not much other than that. Fortunately the pallet offers a lot more than the nose leads on. The first sip is a mouth watering crispy acidic bite of unripe young red cherries, almost sour but not in an overbearing way. The mid palette is filled with green, pencil lead, a touch of salinity and olive. This is my first Lanessan and for whatever reason I was expecting a more fruit forward style, but was pleasantly surprised by the balance and leanness. This is a great example of a left bank Bordeaux that is approachable in its youth. When you factor in the $20 price tag it’s a hard one to beat. Color me impressed I will be buying more and hope to find some with a bit of age to see how they evolve.

Very classic Medoc style. Good fresh red currant fruit, with strong oak spice, pepper, and bay leaf. Palate is quite dry, with great freshness and a medium finish. Opens the next day to warm earth, tobacco, and a richer texture. Tannin is relatively modest, not too silky and with a good grip to it. I'm certainly confident the oak will integrate here with a few years sideways, and the acidity is excellent, nothing spoofy here, just is a very nice, typical Medoc profile that should develop well over the next 10-20.

Made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this medium/full-bodied wine is full of luscious fruits with silky tannins, juicy cassis, plums and tobacco. The wine has richness, length and sweet fruits that make it the best vintage of Lanessan I have ever tasted.
Fresh and frank, composed and elegant on the nose. The palate has power and poise as well. Tasted just after Grands Chenes and what a difference, as the gums are not as affected and yet it shows Medoc power. I still think Senejac is a bit more nuanced. But I like this quite a bit and in agreement with Jane Anson, as we are tasting together today. 89-91+

This has turned a corner. Still on the rustic side with some coarse tannins but rather fantastic black fruits with a bit of bdx funk. Traditionalists will enjoy. Drink or hold.

Imagine some bats and raven flying around the castle on the label and you have an image of the haunted house from Robert Wise’s classic horror movie from 1963 “The Haunting” :-)
This is a popular and widely available Haut-Médoc wine for Bordeaux enthousiasts who are fond of a classic wine with serious aging potential, quite a lot of tannines and a reasonable price (I paid 13,50€, a bargain!).
Diam cork.

Color: medium concentration, no evolution
Nose: this shouts out BDX.

Its medium bodied pretty closed grippy and four square freshly fruited leanish stoney/ironeyblue and red fruits palate ends with a medium length and with some nice a bit rustic and chewy drying tannin.

3h air, drank over 2 days. Medium Ruby color. Plums, blackberry, anise, mushroom. Satin texture, medium body. Red and black fruit, depth, earth, citrus, savory finish. Firm tannins that may soften over time. Drinking well right now, room to evolve. A steal at the price.

Clearly very young. Should buy 6 and hide them away for some time.

Taste Top Wines for June (San Diego Wine Co.): 50% C.S., 35% Merlot, 10% P.V., & 5% C.F. from 30 yr old vines planted in mostly gravelly soils; Typically, vinified (along with malo) in traditional concrete vats; Aged for 12 mos in FR oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 1 yr old, & 1/3 2 yrs old).
N: CLOSED; Smoke with undertones of earth & cherries?
P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish ft met by astringent pucker which slowly, fairly seamlessly, transitions into a LONG, balanced, POSSIBLY very, VERY slightly bitterish finish with a tangy/swtness to the dusty tannins -- & just a BIT of pucker. With an ULT pleasantness, ALL this needs is TIME: Certainly through '21, poss more, then EASILY making its 10th. 13.5% ABV; My VG+/EXC-, the higher (& poss more) with time. 93 pts Suckling, 92 Jeff Leve, 91 Decanter (Anson), 90 WA, 89+ Vinous (Galloni), & 16+/20 ("Good Value") Jancis Robinson! [This vendor's $19.99 now puts it in the TOP 1/2 of wine-searcher's postings.]
Note: Similar to my TN of 5/11/2019

Needs time. Much better on day two. Lovely length. Well built. Solid fruit and tannins are potent. Plummy earthy notes and red berries upfront. Nice and uncomplicated.

Dry, almost austere cassis fruit with a lovely backbone of tannins and acidity. Not a lot of complexity, but has good balance and a recognizable Left Bank style. This should improve with a few more years and drink well for another decade.

Tasted en primeur at Lords. Strong and bold but not fully integrated. I suspect this will happen and should be a relatively early drinking wine. For the price point this seemed to be a very nice wine indeed. Definite Buy.
