Nice young Bordeaux, showing well but still finishing with enough tannins to prompt me to leave my last three for 5 years at least. Cut through the fat of Easter lamb beautifully and when fully integrated will be a smooth unctuous mouthful.

1 hour slow ox followed by 2 hour decant. Not as fruit forward as I was hoping and it didn't open up much more over the 90 minutes or so that we drank. I suspect it's in a closed phase. Even so, nice floral quality and great acidity. An elegant sipper that we all enjoyed. Give another five years.

Still young looking with bright rich ruby colour and only the slightest hint of garnet at the very rim. The nose is complex with dark red fruits, black cherry and raspberry, brambles and hawthorne, fresh leather and a bit of barnyard but beautifully delineated and pure. If you look for it there are also violets and hint of vanilla. Very good quality indeed.
The palate is bright and fresh, and perfectly balanced. Rich red fruits, with enough complexity and slightly seaweed nori styled finish to keep this complex and bring you back for more. This lingers for an age. Tannins are there but beautifully integrated and I was surprised at how approachable and ready to drink this was.
A simply delightful young Bordeaux, and I wouldn’t hesitate to pull a cork, but also plenty of upside potential. I’m a buyer.

Nose: Right off the bat, very floral note. Dark fruit aroma - blackberries, black currants, along with hint of leather and green spice, forest floor. Very serious and complex.
Palate: Fresh acidity with structured tannins from the get go from the bottle. Fruit forward in the beginning with blackberries, black currants, and peppery spices, and finishes with earthy notes, mushrooms, and forest floor.
This is a very approachable and delicious young bordeaux, and I cannot wait to try this again 5-10 years down the road. Sublime.

Christmas Eve dinner at Wimborne. Drank in Grassl Cru. Unfortunate luck of coming after some other astoundingly good Reds on this night. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with purple rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of fresh earth, purple flower, red capsicum, blackberry, blackcurrant, fresh black cherries, cedarwood. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of juicy blackberries, dark currants, red capsicum spice, fresh earth. Very good quality. Primary baby wine with energy but not very ready for serious business quite yet.

From a bottle purchased at retail to help gauge the readiness of my case. This was drinking very well and seemed open for business from PnP, but I gave it a two hour decant anyway. It showed peonies on the nose and loads of black and red fruits on the concentrated, balanced palate. The tannins were very well judged and very ripe; when they start to resolve and some age creeps in, this will be even better. It’s on sale at my local retailer for $60 US/bottle, so I’m going to buy a few more and let the case rest while I go through those. 13% ABV (great; distinctive/****/17.5/94)

Elegance, florality, and purity are the hallmarks of this gem. Medium-bodied, refined, fresh, and clean, the floral bouquet on the front kicks everything off in the right way. The palate is lifted, pure, and energetic, but, also soft and refined, with more than ample layers of ripe, sweet, currants, cherries, and plums in the finish. Drink from 2023-2045.
Choosing not to rate the 2016 Chateau Giscours at this time. 6 hours into our decant, it is clear this wine is still a baby. I'm likely not touching any more of these until 2028. Really pretty nose dominated by black fruits, but the palate is very tight and austere. It's simply not balanced or developed enough at this point in its life, at least for me. I have very high hopes for it in the future, though.
Quick update at the 10 hour mark - nose remains gorgeous and the wine is starting to soften a bit, but overall still not in the right place. I’ll leave this overnight for a final assessment after 24 hours. At this point for me, there is no substitute for time in the cellar. Leave it there and try again in 5 years or so.
24 hours-plus and the wine in the decanter still smelled nicely of blackberries, though much softer now. Meanwhile about 2-3 ounces in the glass over the same timeframe had evolved past the point of being pleasant. A sip or two of the wine from the decanter showed improvement over yesterday, with softer tannins and a rounder profile. My first comments hold true for me - leave these babies alone in the cellar for at least a few more years.

So when I popped this last night it was underwhelming. 24 hours later left in the bottle in the cellar, this has gotten better. Rich color; a real harbinger of a good wine. Less charming than the '19 already is, this will probably live longer and should continue to evolve and improve with more time in bottle. At present, a solidly good nose and mouth, with rich mulberry just beginning to show itself. Pretty red fruit too. Not top echelon, but pretty darn good all the same. 5-12-16-9: 92/100. I fully expect this score to increase in a few more years.

Decanted about 30 minutes before the first taste, then consumed over about two hours. I don’t think this wine needs a long decant, although YMMV, to me 30-60 minutes is adequate. Nose was expressive, with floral top notes with underlying fresh muddled blackberry, sandalwood and earth. Silky on the palate, tannins in check, black fruit, baking spice, nice bittersweet finish. Balanced, everything in proper order. Very good claret, I do not see this getting a lot better with time, but will drink for 20+ years.

Deep ruby colour. Pronounced and developing nose with blackcurrant, blackberry, green bell pepper, black pepper, licorice, cloves, cedar and wet leaves. Pronounced taste of blackcurrant, blackberry, black pepper, licorice, cloves and cedar. Long and dry finish. Medium acidity. Medium tannins. Medium body. A very good Margaux that has developed well, but still has potential. Drink now or over the next fifteen years. Goes well with beef or lamb.

This estate seems to really be getting better lately. Really pretty and delicious vintage of Giscours. After 2 hours in the decanter was open and drinking, though in it's primary fruit phase still. Boysenberry and black currant coulis, the signature Margaux florals of violets, peonies and some mixed graphite, wet garden soil and cedar, and a whisper of hoisin sauce and star anise. The oak needs a bit of time to integrate more, but this wine has great balance and is actually drinking now with some air. Medium bodied, with suave tannins and juicy in structural finish, this is a fine Giscours. Worth seeking out. Great example of Margaux.

Had at Met Grill with brief decant. Didn’t disappoint-Really starting to open up with still mostly primary flavors. Tannins are actually more prominent than the previous bottle. Still has a pronounced chocolate more (not unpleasant). Would guess this has a long life ahead. Great accompaniment to steak.

10 hour decant. Dark ruby color. Black currant, blackberries, strawberries, leather, mushroom, earthy, graphite, smoke, tobacco and oak on the nose. Fruit dominant on the palate with good balanced acidity. Tannins are present, but integrated after the long decant. Long and nice finish. Amazing wine.

Same bottle as collector. Had some second wines from 2016 but this must be my first “serious” 2016 Bdx. The extensively described change in Bdx style from 09/10 to 16 is very evident here. This is a mid bodied wine that is already showing very good balance. Not much baby fat not are big tannins peaking out. Some oak but already very drinkable in my eyes. Fine aromatics but can’t see the depth for a aignificantly higher score just yet. There is however certainly room to the upside, whether it ends up at 93 or goes significantly higher I cannot tell at this point in time. Hold 93+

Friend brought this to a dinner. Far too young. However, like all 2016, really well proportioned, classic sappy, oak needs to integrate though. This will be good after 2030. 94-95

Shows its big potential, but (no surprise!) not on peak today. Very precise and typical red and black fruits, black currant, cedar. It's not shut down, but there are also no signs of aging and the fruit stage has nearly past. Does not improve much on the 2nd day. Will be big maybe in another 5-10 years. Have to wait before opening another bottle.
This was good but nothing special on Day 1 after a couple hours decanting. On Day 2 it really opened up and was smooth with leather/tobacco/red fruits and mellow tannins. We visited the winery a few years ago and had a good experience. I have 2 more bottles and will hold for another ~3+ yrs

Disappointed here as I'd heard good things about recent vintages of Giscours, but this was more oaky than I enjoy. The fruit beneath is more red in character than I expected, but the tannin and oak both give this a bitterness that makes it feel unbalanced and it's hard to enjoy right now as a result.

Had with roast pork after 2 hour decant. Lovely Margaux, Merlot predominant based on the prominent chocolatey notes. Tannins are surprisingly non-prominent, so wondering how this will age.
Chateau Giscours 2016, Margaux, dekantert i 8 timer.

My last of 6 half bottles purchased en primeur, I'm sad to say. I purchased these as a barometer of the '16 bordeaux vintage and have not been disappointed. Tonight, the palate shows lots of cedar perfume, on the palate dark fruit, mineral, tannins. Smooth.

Deep color, inhaling rich perfumed aromas is an experience worth the price. No apologies for calling this Margaux exquisitely, enticingly feminine from the cologne sweet, floral, cedar, armpit, to the soft, silky mouthfeel to the firm, pliant, supple backbone. She is young, she will develop nicely but don't wait for the dry wrinkles; a wine may age to perfection, an oenophile not so much.
Oak and leather dominated, and this Giscours 2016 is still at least 3-5 years before its greatness will shine!
The nose is delightful even though in a blind test it was outshone by its fellow 3eme but lesser Margaux, D'Issan 2014. Guess vintage is as important as the winemaker..
A delightful afternoon birthday celebration for the missus, brought forward due to impending C19 lockdown starting Tuesday!
Robust and powerful ?? Nice oak and blackfruit notes, this was such a nice treat from E and Z at our Champignon lunch over Bank Holiday ???? yesterday ?? Excellent paired with the flank steak ??

Trade tasting: 93/94. Typically aromatic with aristocratic aromas of cedar infused blueberries, flowers, iron hints, plums, cassis and spice. Its medium to full bodied weightless and spherical, stylish satiny well oaked blue and red fruits palate has lovely depth and excellent length and freshness. 13%. Lay down 20-30 years+ easily but is drinking beautifully now. Needs 6-7 hrs aeration+. Only got a thimbleful. This is very near to Macau and is much improved in the last 10 years. Is it worth 80 Euros???
From a half bottle, decanted for 3h. More muted and restrained than before, lots of cedar, faint dark fruit, minerals too. Tannins seem to have resolved. Less compelling than my previous half bottles, maybe entering a dumb phase? I will try to wait a while before opening my last one.

Decanted for 6 hours and paired with NY strip steak reverse seared. Had a glass before the steak, and I got more ‘old world’ feel with tobacco / dill / eucalyptus flavors. With the meal and thereafter I got more red fruit flavors, and it continued to open. Of course it’s young and will evolve a lot. Probably 2-3 pts upside potential from here.

Trade tasting: 92/93. Lovely, aromatic blue fruits, flowers, cedar, gravel, and cassis. Its medium bodied voluptuous, cedary satiny blue and red fruits palate ends extremely long, fresh and tapering. The Best Giscours I have ever had. Low alcohol 13% makes this very drinkable. Lay down 10-20 years easily. I think this will benefit from 6hrs aeration. I think it has upside to a 94/95 score either with aeration or laying down. Exciting!

Decanted for two hours. Such a marvelous garnet and slight ruby rim. Black currant, blackberry, dried rose petal, cranberry, cherry wood and peonies. This is buttressed in silk, layered tannins, and a supple, engaging middle palate. During the echoing finish, the theme of finesse continues. So concentrated, yet refined, with a full body: this is Giscours 101. I would love to taste this next to the ‘05, ‘09 and ‘15. In actuality, this goddess might be the best ever for here. This is of course infanticide. Drink 2025 -.

Another case of infanticide this week, but I am having a hard time keeping my hands off these spectacular 2016s. Coravin'ed and drank over three nights. On the last night, I poured through a Vinturi, which in hindsight, should have been done every night. Straight out of the bottle, this has classic Margaux elegance, with violets and red fruit. With some aeration, this really blossomed and picked up some complexity. Unlike the Gloria I had a few days earlier, this needs some serious time. Lots of potential though.

Ruby gem in color, the wine is floral, with hints of licorice, cocoa, crème de cassis and tobacco in the perfume. Where do you go when you crave Consistent, Classy, Classic Bordeaux blends? (forgive me for all the C words) You go to Chateau Giscours in Margaux! This producer hits the mark every year after year with little recognition or price appreciation. Thank you CG for providing us true Bordeaux experiences in age worthy wines at fair prices! Cabernet distinct nose of, earth, coffee grounds, and mild cedar. Underneath, its plum dominated with a good balance between red and black fruit. This needs time to meld...I would give this 5 years...One to stash. HOLD for now

UGC 2019 Los Angeles (Jeremy Hotel, West Hollywood): More masculine in style from the du Tertre; nose shows brawnier with more apparent oak influence; soft mid, with acid leaning a touch soft for my taste. Château Giscours, Margaux, 2016: I am a big fan of Giscours. The previous vintage, 2015, was in my opinion the best that I had ever tasted from this property. I say "was", simply because the 2016 outdoes it. This vintage is what I call a true classic year for Bordeaux. And by classic I mean it as an adjective for class. Dark, impenetrable garnet towards purple in color. The nose is enticing, showing light smoke, ripe raspberries, nutmeg, wild blueberries, blackberries violets, cedar, and tobacco. Full-bodied, powerful yet silky and elegant at the same time. As it opened up over many hours of decanting, layers of complex aromas and flavors unfolded to reveal juicy wild blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, graphite, dried mushrooms, loamy dirt, roasted hazelnuts, with medium-plus acidity and tight, powdery tannins enveloping the mouth with dark chocolate cherries and smoky undertones lingering on the seemingly endless finish. Truly exceptional. 13% Abv. Drink 2028-2046, perhaps longer. 95-96

Tasted at Chateau Du Tertre, barrel sample. 81 CS 19 M
Contrast to 2016 Du Tertre tasted alongside, this Giscour possesses immense power and structure not familiar in this appellation. Doesn't mean that this isn't a good thing. It's just not made in the same style as its sister chateau. This wine once bottled will need a lot of time in the cellar before making any dents to the stone of drinkability.

Flowers garnished with truffles, tobacco, spicy cassis and dark red fruits pop on the nose. In the mouth, this is all silk and purity with freshness and length. This wine was produced from a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. This is the highest percentage of Cabernet used in the blend in the history of the estate. The wine reached 13.5% alcohol with a 3.6 pH. The picking took place from September 26 to October 5, while the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from October 5 to October 20.

Very important long aging wine I am being told and after taste La sirene. Lots of Cabernet this vintage, which is a strange but strange in a good way. The Cabernet is so awesome that they put most of it into the gran vin. 50% new oak here.
Fresh is the word. Here is certainly enough blue and black currrant, touches of iron and cranberry red fruits but is the singing electric energy of the vintage which is quite lively. That's going to make for some old bones.
Apparently this is a tank sample bottled just today for us.

Hold 93+

Chateau Giscours 2016, Margaux, dekantert i 8 timer.

Matches well with any Bernadette Peters CD.
