Impromptu Barbaresco and Fresh Venison Dinner (New Jersey, USA): Pnp as a starter for our impromptu Barbaresco and Venison dinner. This was lovely from the first sniff. Wonderful medium lemon yellow color, in contrast to a recent note from another CT’er, this showed no signs of age or oxidation. It screamed honeysuckle and green melon on the nose. Palate had more honeysuckle and melon along with tropical fruit (pineapple), minerals amd a little almond on the finish. The mouth feel was rich and oily, yet bright with acidity akin to a good Riesling. This was delicious and one of the best bottles of Arneis I have had. Great QPR. Plenty of life left if kept in a cool cellar.

No real notes. This made the move from 41 Fallon to 110 Woodland as a wine that had been pulled and put in the refig for convenience. We pulled this for Dreama Anderson’s chicken pot pie (from Costco - very tastey). We were so tired from the move and the stress of the closing that we really didn’t pay attention to it, but I recall it paired well with the dish.

A golden honey color, but not at all brown in the way some honey is; this color is more like a pale golden moon. The nose is rich with honey, lemon oil, honeysuckle and something nutty. DDB says almond, but I tend to lean toward cashews. Whatever it is, we love it! The mouthfeel is crisp yet has just enough heft to it. An incredibly balanced wine. 13.5% alc. With cheeses and a Food Lion “baguette” that was very good. Food Lion? Who knew? Highly Recommended.

Light gold color. PNP, split bottle over 90 minutes. This was a stunningly pure wine of saline, ocean breezes and minerality, lemongrass, citrus and white peach with amazing depth and penetration. Burned through it ridiculously fast. Not the slightest indication of fading.

Floral, lemon sherbet, tropical fruits - a bit like a muted Viognier, apricots and peach. Quite full bodied. No real depth of flavour or lift, short and simple. This is probably one of the best Arneis made and 2016 was a stunning vintage in Barolo - so I conclude, as I have thought before, that Arneis is just not a noble grape variety and will never be anything other than "OK".

Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party (I Nonni, St. Paul, MN): Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Dang this is impressive. Drank this next to an excellent Ceretto, and the Giacosa took things to another level. The nose has bright minerals, ocean, cinders, citrus, lemongrass. The palate is great acid and energy, tons of stony minerality and brine, citrus, lemongrass, and good length. Loved it.

Similar to the 2015, but a bit rougher and unsettled. After about a week in the fridge with a Repour it smoothed out considerably and became much more interesting. Should decant the next bottle--or just wait! 3/10/20: Second bottle. Pnp. No roughness at all this time, in fact the keyword here is elegance. A bit less crisp than the 2015, but just a lovely white all the same. Went beautifully with baked salmon. It was so enjoyable that I'm upping the rating to three stars.

Partial notes: started inside, carried onto boat and consumed amid waves, wind, and a limited attention span. Love Roero Arneis generally, expected Bruno Giacosa to excel for this white that originates in a sea of red Piemontese wines. But for this vintage at least, underwhelming. Excessive amount of CO2 made it into bottling, got a loud pop when reopened at sea! Insufficient fruit to reflect and appreciate the Arneis grape. Maybe better if consumed last year? But a '16 shouldn't be over the hill at this point. Comme ci, comme ça for a wine that should be a charmer.

With Rosalie’s birthday dinner, seafood at Eleven. Straw gold. Crisp nose with citrus notes. Typical Giacosa palate, rich and complex, with citrus in the background and on the long finish. We like this much better than the 2015, which was quite good in its own right.

First bottle of the night at our Piemontese wine and food event. Our guests, two wine industry pros (writer/editor and PR person), as well as the spouse of one of those, really like this, so much they were taking pictures of the label to find more. Texas Bob and patwjr are pretty on point there. This may have gone through malo, is my guess, giving it a little added richness and smoothing out the edges. I should look for more, esp as I gave away a couple bottles at the end of the night.
Slightly cloudy light yellow-gold. Beautiful lemon cream and mineral nose. Notes of honeyed flowers and a touch of sugared fresh-squeezed lemon juice and a hint of effervescence. Very tasty and an excellent match with a margherita pizza.

Nose: White peach and pear, bit of white flower and a hint of vanilla/spice. Well projected.
Mouth: Viscous apricot and sweet pear glide across the palate and comprise a juicy core for the florals to play around. Fruit weight is fantastic for the varietal. Light acidity dances into the finish, giving way to a delicate drydown of honeysuckle and champagne flavors. Flowers, amazingly, continue on for quite some time.
Overall: Wonderfully balanced and a flagrant exception to the rule of Arneis (or Italian whites) being swill. One of the OG champions of the grape is here doing it beautifully. Initially I wondered about a $30 price tag on an Arneis, this is worth it and then some. 100% Arneis.
92.

Coravin 3/23/18: Yellow-golden; aromatic, lemon, honey, mineral, citrus zest; palate is medium bodied, medium alcohol (13.5%), dry, lemon, medium to medium-plus acidity which provides a bit of lift; medium finish. A nice food wine, balanced, nice citrusy notes. Solid. 90 Remainder of bottle: Same as before even over 2 days (no oxidation on the 2nd day). Solid wine with plenty of citrus notes, fresh minerality, excellent balance. Great value.

Forward white and tropical fruit. Interesting light mineral and aroma/flavor of white pepper and porcini powder. Touch of lemon-ginger as well. Acidity is just adequate, keeping this from being a crisp or elegant wine.

solid wine with crispness, minerality, nice hints of lemon, ginger and a touch of a tangerine bubble gum. I am getting to really like the Arneis wines of Italy especially compared to simple roses as this is much better Pinto Grigio Italian. Just is what it is, a refreshing straightforward crisp white with solid fruit, good mineral and acids.

Enticing perfume of spring florals and white fruit. The palate is rather lush and round with tropical and citrus flavors. The wine feels clear, fresh and clean, almost refreshing, yet the fruit is full and present. As others have noted, I could use more acidity, this one lacks the spark that made the '15 a tad crisper and a bit more lively. Nonetheless, this wine is as usual a terrific value buy...and a nod to Bruno this week.

Dark golden color. Strong minerality, stony. A little flabby even chilled— wished for more acidity. Slight nutty flavor on finish. Hints of honey. Some more rounded complexity with time, does open up and becomes more generously fruited as it sits. Perhaps not the strongest showing, but a decent QPR. 89 pts.

Day 2 in Piedmont (Giacosa, Conterno, & Cavallotto) (Piedmont, Italy): Very tropical wine with pineapple, apricot, melon, & herbs on the nose. Its palate is crisp with more tropical flavors and a sweet finish. I prefer the Vietti Arneis to the Giacosa version - this one doesn't have as much acidity.

Extremely good. Pop and pour, bright white floral nose with a hint of grapefruit. Rich and silky in the mouth - - bit silkier than other Arneis I've had recently. Sharp and acidic with lovely length, puckering and mouth watering. An exciting wine, but will it be as good when I'm not sitting in the shade of a lovely patio in La Morra? I don't care now.

Coravin 3/23/18: Yellow-golden; aromatic, lemon, honey, mineral, citrus zest; palate is medium bodied, medium alcohol (13.5%), dry, lemon, medium to medium-plus acidity which provides a bit of lift; medium finish. A nice food wine, balanced, nice citrusy notes. Solid. 90
Remainder of bottle: Same as before even over 2 days (no oxidation on the 2nd day).

Nice enough, with aromas and flavors I would call floral rather than tropical. But I agree with everyone else that more acidity would help.

89 pts.

Straw color with clearity. Mineral nose. Melon, lemon, and pineapple palate with some acidity.
