  • This was decanted for a few hours, put back in the bottle and then followed over two nights.
After some air time, some pleasant aromas of spices, toasted raisin bread, darker fruits, and a hint of that "bordeaux funk" that I like (and in prior notes have labeled "grandpa's sweaty old cardigan", because it is like a combo of wool and gentle b.o. notes). Not as promising on the palate, unfortunately, a bit constrained and acidic. I think time will be a friend of this wine for sure. Try to hold for 10 years before cracking another. Not a great vintage of LB, but a very nice wine for sure, and in time I think this will merit a higher score. (Interestingly enough, I recall Langoa Barton being the bigger wine (so far) in this vintage ...)

  • Mellow. Subtle. Brilliant. A nose of sweet honey, with a touch of leather. Fresh and lively. A fabulous wine. Drinking beautifully now.

The 2017’s: We have been through 6 bottles of Gloria; 6 of 12 bottles of Saint Pierre; and now our first bottle of Leoville Barton.

2017 may be very approachable in it’s youth in Saint Julien, but it is not a troubled vintage at all. Enjoy!

  • 375ml

Nose Wants a steak. Lots of tannin still.

No rush. Not a good value but good. Probably should have waited 10 years.

  • Lovely blackberry, dark currant nose. Medium bodied, silky tannins and impressive persistence. A noble effort for the vintage, the wine has a liveliness and freshness to it. Very enjoyable on opening but will surely round into form with a few more years in the bottle. Hard to resist now given the deft oak management. One of my favorite producers, sorry that I did not buy this in quantity.

  • Very good and promising wine. Should reach 94-95 in 5 years.

  • I think this is a bit too extracted and oaked for what the vintage offered, but it’s still a lovely wine.

  • Almost like a breath of Spring air, the 2017 Leoville-Barton is just so fresh. Fresh cassis, mineral, a little licorice. A touch of coal evolves with some swirling. The tannins are suave here.

  • Fruit forward, soft tannin. I’d say open for business. Nice enough wine. Will it ever be great ?

  • Absolutely stunning bottle, creamy texture, silky tannins, long finish, superb deep core of fruit. With prosciutto and cheese for our apartment warming get together. These 17s are incredible values and drinking beautifully right now.

  • Great complexity, with a complete range of floral, fruity, and savory: rose, blackberry, weed, olive oil, and tapenade (though I suppose those last two are basically the same thing). Structured and big in the mouth, with a ton of tannin. And the mid-length finish closes things out nicely with an interesting inky/coffee note. Big time QPR here.

  • Beautiful wine, needs time but still very enjoyable now. Exuberant nose right from the start - mostly fruit (cherry and red currant) at this point, but some spice and cedar as well. Very well balanced wine, good acidity and super fine tannins. Nice long finish. Try again in 5 years.

  • Good wine, but somewhat unremarkable. Usually I get a lot more from Leoville Barton. This wine is either shutting down, or it’s just an example of a slightly poor vintage. I’ve got one more I’ll put away and forget about for several years before I revisit this vintage.

  • Decanter for 4 hours. There is certainly potential here, but the wine tasted a bit green at the moment. Seems to be shutting down maybe. Hold.

  • Another really solid wine from Barton. Popped and anodouzed for two hours; frankly a long decant would have been better. Others have ably described the wine so I won’t rehash their comments. I will be chasing a case at least. Drink from 2025 forward, I would pass on current consumption as it needs to flesh out and show more. Room for a further point or two in grading at that time.

  • Drank 20+ year vertical of 1995, 2005 and 2017. 1995 was favorite of the night.
    Color of dark red.
Scents of red and black fruit/berries.
Tastes consistent with scents, and with prominent forward ripe fruit and tannins of youthfulness.

  • Commanderie de Bordeaux - Leoville Barton/Satorious Zoom Tasting: Small pour for a winemaker tasting - PnP but waited about 30 mins for wine to aerate in the glass. The best wine of the lineup. This is drinking quite well, leaning more fruit forward, but still showing off the terroir with fine tannins and a decent finish. Nose and palate showed dark fruit, cassis, earthiness, mushroom and some sweet toasted oak. This wine punches well above its price point and should further improve with additional bottle age. Pretty darn good for $100 Bordeaux! 93 to 93+ and should improve, as these wines seem to age quite gracefully.

  • Tasted at a winemaker function hosted by Damien Sartorius. Really stood out. Beautifully balanced fruit, spice, earthiness and tannins. This wine punched far above is price. Winemaker indicated that that the tannins are very fine and should last a long time. I can't say, but this is drinking beautifully now and is a bargain.

  • From 375
Very ripe, easy cab. Blind I wouldn’t have thought Bordeaux, especially not LB.
very flashy, just a few months after a very backward seeming bottle.
Very delicious, but I’m less sure about longevity.

    Deep purple black.
Bright dark currant aromas and flavors
Blind I thought cab 2017, but couldn’t identify place, almost too ripe for Bordeaux, and thought restrained Napa.
This is lovely, and while clearly needing time, this particular bottle was really starting to sing.

  • This is showing better in bottle than when I last tasted in 2017 at the domaine.

PnP and served blind. Youthful in color, This has classic notes of black currant intermingled with some green tobacco leaf and faint purple florals. It has enough firmness on the palate that it may eventually shut down. Thankfully, I expect it to behave a lot like 2008 or 2012, or even 2014. It bears little resemblance to the more polished recent releases. My knock on the wine is that it did not come across as especially concentrated, and I thought it might have been a 2nd wine from 2018

  • Try again in 2026

  • Virtual tasting hosted by proprietors Lilian and Damien Barton Sartorius. Two different vintages each of Mauvesin Barton (2014, 2016), Langoa Barton (2009, 2015) and Léoville Barton (2012, 2017) were presented. Needless to say the Léovilles outshone the others, although the Mauvesin 2016 showed a really respectable performance.

    Tasting note
Rain in September diluted the Merlot and the 2017 hence has the highest content of cab sauv on record. Nonetheless this came across very much fruit forward, showing surprisingly red berries and lots of sweet spices. Maybe an more narrow flavour profile than other vintages, but still a complete nose, sensual and seductive. The Bartons stressed their attention to avoid over-extraction, and you could really tell. Good tension on the palate, well integrated already pointing to an early drinking vintage. This is an unexpectedly fantastic 2017. I didn't really participate in the 2017 campaign, but am considering stocking up on this for near-term pleasure. Fully confirms my impression at a Bordeaux 2017 tasting 2 years ago.

  • Quite compact aromas with a beautifully concentrated fruit core of more ripe perfumed blackberries, blackcurrants, espresso, against tobacco, graphite and leather. Good full-bodied wine with dense, yet with this juiciness in the fruit of blackberries, blackcurrants, espresso, leather, licorice, anise and coffee. Tighter finish with nice acidity and firm, but typical tannins. Maybe not quite in balance yet, but it does not need it then either. Wine for the next 20 years. Excellent wine. 93 points

  • Robe pourpre dense;
Fort plaisant!

  • Tannic, bright, fresh and crisp, the red berries really pop and sing here. The wine is lively, bright and fresh, with nice concentration and a long, fruit-filled finish. But patience will be a virtue for this classic gem.

  • Decanted 2 hours. From small bottle. A good Leoville Barton with a lot of potential but (at least for me) not as good as the 2016. Less depht and slightly more acidity than the 2016 vintage. 92(-) pts. at the moment.

  • Amsterdam UGCB Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Beurs van Berlage / Eden Hotel): Trade tasting, brief note. Made with 93% Cabernet-Sauvignon and it shows, so pure and precise, an essence of the grape and a clear expression of the Saint-Julien terroir, black fruit, perfectly balanced and harmonious, long finish with a touch of liquorice. I noticed that I scored this higher than the 2016 last year, maybe it's the context, but this 2017 is a really an outstanding wine.

  • The 2017 Léoville Barton is a bit of a hidden treasure given how overshadowed the 17s are by the 2016s (which is usually justified). But Léoville Barton seems to be one of the few chateaux to make a 17 that approaches its 16 with a nose of currant and cherry that deftly balances potency and elegance. The plum and mineral palate shows terrific depth for the year and the long, cedary finish bodes very well for the future.

  • 2017 UGC Des Bordeaux, San Francisco, nose of lovely black berry, cassis, and floral notes, on palate, started simple but more expressive the second sip, medium/big body, most surprising was the lack of usual big tannins as today the tannins were small amount of soft tannins, lovely tasting fruit, mouth filling fruit, and long finish.

  • Lacking intensity; medium grainy tannins; good acidity and medium finish. LA UGC Tasting.

  • UGC Bordeaux (Drake Hotel - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Very good aromatic start with black cherry and berry and savory spice and tobacco. Similar flavors, just not as rich as the nose seems to have implied, but maybe it's the very firm tannins taking charge. Good+ potential, 89-91 points.

  • Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur - In Bottle Tasting (Montreal): This shows a good core of fruit, density and length, however, the tannins are very dry and unbalanced at the moment. This needs 10 years or so to come around.

  • Bordeaux 2017: A first look at the newly bottled 2017s Bordeaux. Twelve top 50 Chateaux, three top whites and one top sweet wine tasted (but hardly any superstar). All in all, the wines are good with a soft structure which might make them relatively early approachable. In terms of concentration and depth, however, they do not even remotely match the 2016s (or 2015s and 2018s for that matter). I had a tad higher hopes (for the reds and whites). Top reds: Pichon Lalande (94), Carmes, Poyferre, Canon and Valandraud (all 93) – all with 2 or 3 points upside once mature. As there are so many great recent vintages, there is no need to chase the 2017s reds, especially as they’re priced too high (compared to the other vintages). The sweet wines might be worth exploring further.

TN: I fall the very pure and very dark and blue fruit expression and classic shape of the Leoville Bartons. The 2016 (tasted twice) was the biggest positive surprise in all 2016 tastings (rated 95 and 96 points with upside to 97/98 points easily). This 2017 was good but without the sharpness and depth of the 2016. As it is true for the 2016 (and the 2018) this will never be the most elegant and seductive wine but the purity is attractive enough to make me love this winery. 92 with upside to 95 once mature.

  • Arvi 2017 in the bottle tasting at the Dolder Grand in Zurich. Main conclusions: 1) Less concentration and complexity than 2015 and 2016; 2) generally soft tannins and light structures; 3) often well approachable already. Not a vintage to store for future generations, but one where you probably won't have to wait for a decade or more to pop a bottle and is likely to offer drinking pleasure early on. Of the 20 wines tasted, my top picks would be Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Clinet, Chevalier Blanc, Pichon Lalande (all 96) followed by Leoville Barton, de Fargues and Valandrau (all 95). See the tasting story for some number crunching.

    Tasting note:
Very classic showing dark berries, good depth, fine herbal aromatics, sweet savoury. On the palate a cherry like fruit and lots of structure. One of the best total packages of the vintage.

  • bouteille échantillon au domaine.

The wine is fresh, red fruited, relatively closed, but good concentration and depth. Consistent with the house style. A good, not great year, similar in style to 2014 IMO but won’t be as long lived

  • 93 CS, the rest M. Sample from barrel.

Extremely plush black fruit, blackberry, raspberry, freshly picked blueberry, quite smoky already. Some barrell room smell.

Structurally balanced. Fresh acidity, Cabernet-framed tannin, and med plus body. Some extraction but not over the top.

This is going to be a great Leoville Barton vintage. It will as always take ample time to come around. Expected not before 2030. Peak around 2033-2043. 91+

  • Barrel sample at BB&R 2017 en primeur tasting. I usually buy Leoville Barton and have done so this year, so this sample was disappointing. Perhaps I had set too high a bar in my mind with anticipation. Dark colour yet lightish body. Flavoursome and good finish. I've underestimated young Barton before (the '88) so lets hope I've done so again.

  • Tasted after 2017 Langoa Barton. Powerful tannins, very tight, very introvert. The tannins are ripe, there is plenty of cool, dark fruit, depth, good acidity. Very long. 93-94+

  • Love it; understandably quite tight, but all the proportions are classic here. This is a refreshing, upright, energetic, medium-bodied, well-balanced wine with plenty of pure cassis-laden material. A success, without a doubt.

  • A striking blood red in color, this wine opens easily with smoldering cedar, tobacco and an unhurried pour of cassis. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, full bodied, fresh and classically styled. Buoyancy, creaminess, smart tannins with a crisp, juicy finish wrap everything up nicely. Blending 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, the wine reached 13.% alcohol and is aging in 60% new, French oak barrels.

  • The Grand Tour - day two (Bordeaux): Merlot from remontage tub. Sulphur and yeast extract. More of the same on the palate with massive front of mouth and gum grip over red plum fruit. This was the juice that had just finished alcoholic fermentation but still needed to go through malolactic.
