"Pairs with Sadness" (Chicago, IL): So nice to be able to revisit this without opening one of my own. Surprisingly accessible and drinkable given the somewhat awkward age right now. Still very much a product of the vintage, with its bright, perfumed red fruit. Granitic to a T, minerally, and just flat-out delicious. No harm in opening bottles now.

Black fruit with touch of dark rasberry, menthol and a slightly wild nose with olive, stems and violets. Quite good acidity, bit of earth and dried meat. Fine grained tannins. Feels slightly higher ABV (would have guessed 14%). Elegant and complex. A very enjoyable St.Joseph. Will improve with 3+ years, but drinking nicely already.

Sunday Northern Rhône Survey (San Francisco): Slightly lighter color than the Chave. Wilder, very forward nose with violets and menthol. Lighter body than the last wine and less dense. Green herb, fruit in the redder spectrum, high acidity, great earth running through it, and fine grained tannins. Elegant, complex style. These were 2 strikingly different St. Joseph’s from the same vintage. I have to believe that I would have had a better chance of picking this one out as a Rhône Syrah had I tasted it blind.

Book Release Wine Dinner-“The New French Wine” (The Morris, San Francisco): Deep ruby but not opaque. Killer Syrah nose-perfumed violets and olive with a touch of green. Medium to full bodied with real creamy concentration. Great interplay of soil, black and blue fruit, and quite tannic finish. Delectable and crunchy now but only at the front end of what should be a long drinking window. Most people's red wine of the evening.

Man, this is as good as young Northern Rhone gets. Young, but already showing lots of meaty, spicy, stemmy, olivey nuances and the fruit is seamless with good balance. I'm sure this will evolve and age gracefully but providing a ton of pleasure at this early stage.

March Rhônes (Chicago, IL): Not quite showing as well right now -- this is kind of ornery and closed down, with the fruit not showing the expected purity and brightness of 2016. Moderately tannic with lots of white pepper, as Gonon often shows. Likely better with a few years, though I'm not convinced there's enough fruit here for this wine to age 20-30 years.

Nose is complex, layered, with floral notes of violets, spice, pepper, and the anchovies that I really love, like in the Grange des Pères when they are stunning. So it has all the best expressions of great Syrah here...
The tannins here as well are getting integrated and balanced with still a fantastic grip of acidity holding the whole thing. M+ tannins, M+ Body, M+ acidity but all is aged and integrated in a balanced an fresh palate. Super long wine, infinite finish, lasting forever on a anchovies, tapenade, sooth ...
A private dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): This has real star quality. Exemplary purity, energy, freshness and precision, gentle charm and souplesse, especially in the context of the AOC. Youthful and minerally and fresh but starting to develop tertiary qualities, black pepper, firm but papery tannins, medium body, excellent resonance and length.

At Tablee Dinner in New York. Strikingly attractive nose. On the palate, more full throttled than I expected. Quite vigorous. Darker fruit. Some power. But a little edgy in its components - not yet fully integrated. At an awkward stage perhaps. Six years out not ideal. Needs time. Will surely be really good.

Darkly, burlier expression of gonon. Delicious and complete. I will say that it doesn't have a burst of red acidic fruit on the mid palate like some vintages do. This is definitely on the more stern side, but a very successful wine that will age well.

PnP. Not very expressive on the nose, faint notes of wet earth, flowers, and stems. Bright acidity and firm/dry mid-palate, medium-bodied and not showing much complexity. Gonon rarely shutdown hard but this is in an awkward semi-shutdown phase. Clearly not showing its best form, time to wait.

Animalistic nose is meaty, sweaty, funky, musky, leathery without really seeming dirty. Black pepper and olive tapenade. Dark fruits are there but in hiding. Even after 2-3 hours decanting, the wine still hadn’t really opened up. Need to try this with 5-10 more years of bottle age and/or several hours decanting.

Similar notes to bottle I had in 2019, though this is even more open/giving than I remembered. Drinking well right upon opening. Balanced and should age nicely but not overly structured such that it’s very enjoyable and worth trying now.

Served blind. Clearly Syrah given the dense core, dark blackcurrents and pepper. Given the huge amount of sediment I assumed this was much older, yet only a 2016! Overall, a great wine, and would love to see how this aged. Drank with SW

Seems to be a bit ornery right now; admittedly this probably wasn't the best time to open one... in any case, the nose is still fairly similar to what i remember this wine being like originally -- it is explosive, with a generous dose of purple fruit. Then with air, the salinity and olives emerge and the burliness scales down; it becomes more elegant and shapely. Without a doubt an excellent wine, though perhaps not the best to open currently.

Mmmm this is good! Finessed red berry fruits...raspberry, cherry, plum...showing more of an elegant side, in perfect balance right now, yet still has that sauvage...blood iron, olive tapenade, braised meat, leather...wonderful potpourri florals and deep spice...smoked cherry wood exotics...red licorice, tobacco leaf...SO smooth and silky, yet jagged with crushed rock minerality and puckered acidity...which keeps the party rockin! Such wonderful florals(seems Cote Rotie like) and silky texture...yet solid in structure...in it for the long haul. Killer!

Another year, another stellar Gonon. This one is brighter and more red-fruited in its flavour profile; the earthy, stemmy, and other savoury notes are rather restrained and it's much more fruit-forward than I find Gonon tends to be on release. But it's absolutely delicious with superb balance and the structure to age wonderfully. Glad I have a bunch buried for the long haul.

1/12. Dark black/red. Much more expressive than I was expecting given some of the notes. After only 30 mins air, complex and floral open nose of herbs, black currants, olives, licorice, pepper. Certainly young and dense on the palate but great dark juicy fruits and licorice, with some herbs and a very olong finish. A touch dry from tannin but actually really well integrated at this young stage. Excellent.

Saline and olive with bright red fruit and juicy acidity, nicely framed structure without being overly tight. Showing the character of 2016 but more red fruit profile with nice depth. I think this will be even more delightful in 5-7 but does not need 15 years to be enjoyed.
Blind N. Rhones: Side by side with Les Iles Feray. More restraint, nuance and complexity here. Loaded with so much black pepper. Enticing at every turn. Terrific vintage.

Managed to pick up additional 9x from another source few months ago, so now I don't mind opening a few of them young. PnP. Flowers, stems, and dungeon notes on the nose. Since the last bottle about 14 months ago, this has gained some weight, also showing more prominent tannin. It's in semi-shut stage, certainly not as showy as last bottle. Vibrant acidity and without a trace of alcohol or any heaviness. Neil Young is humming the unplugged version (circa 1993) of "Long May You Run" on YouTube. For sure this wine will last a long long time with its excellent balance. First came across this song from the "Decade" album, an album that warmed my soul through those hard cold winters in Great White North a couple of light years ago...

A Few Miscellaneous Wines in Burgundy, Outside of Big Meals and Tastings; 6/27/2019-7/6/2019 (Burgundy): Open an hour before drinking. Complex and broad array of black, blue and red berry aromas with black pepper hints. Similar flavors are slightly less forthcoming to start, then slowly opened up over the next hour+ in glass. Silky but pronounced tannins are slightly more overt for now than I’d consider ideal, so I think this reward at least 5 years in the cellar and drink wonderfully for a couple decades, with 93-94 point potential.

A complex nose of intense violet and flowers and blueberry, accompanied by ripe black fruits, leather, animal, cedar, forest floor. The tannins were strong & drying and this would benefit from another 3-8 years in the bottle. This is evolving into a truly delicious wine

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 6/20/2019-6/22/2019 (Chicago, IL): It's inevitable to make the comparison between the 2015 and 2016. This is a profoundly different wine, showing an intense salinity and an incredible elegance. The fruit is red-hued and bright, as opposed to the dark complexion of the 2015, and in general, this is a far brighter and more lifted wine than the brooding older sibling. There's some white pepper and lots of delicious youthful fruit. If you are lucky to have enough bottles of this, open one now -- it's worth it.
By the glass. Tannic, long and very intense. On the nose game notes along with other dried herbs and limestone. Density without end, sapid depth plaqued by acidity and an undeniable complexity on the palate.

Made from grapes that have been grown organically on predominantly granite soil. Fermented spontaneously in open-top oak fermentors with 2-week maceration as 80% whole bunches. Aged for 24 months in old foudres and 600-liter demi-muids. Bottled with ~50 mg/l SO2. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted half-blind.
Youthful, almost fully opaque and noticeably concentrated blackish-red color. At first - and this is after some three hours of sitting in a decanter - the nose is heavily reductive with dominant notes of gunpowder smoke and flatulent sulfurous character, slowly revealing subtle notes of wizened blackberries, some peppercorns, a little bit of briny olive, light crunchy blackcurrant tones, hints of stony minerality and a touch of brambly raspberry. It takes more than 5 hours before the reduction really starts to blow off and the nose feels open. The wine is ripe, fresh and slightly reductive even on the palate with intense flavors of juicy blackberries, fresh red plum tones, a little bit of olive, light sanguine notes of gamey meat, a hint of stony minerality and a floral touch of violets. The mouthfeel is dense and even chewy, yet not heavy or weighty, partly thanks to the bright, high acidity that lends great freshness and intensity to the wine. The medium-plus tannins feel firm and somewhat grippy. The finish is moderately grippy, long and quite spicy with savory flavors of peppery spice and allspice, some reductive notes of gunpowder smoke, a little bit of crunchy blackcurrants and blackberries, light woody notes of savory oak spice and a hint of olive.
A wonderfully fresh, vibrant and balanced Saint-Joseph, but a polar opposite to the stunning 2015 vintage. While the previous vintage was remarkably open from the get-go with incredibly fragrant and perfumed floral and dark fruit tones, this wine was in a remarkably closed phase with heavy reduction and flavors more in brighter, red-fruited and spicier spectrum. While I expected the wine to benefit from decanting, I honestly didn't expect the wine to be so darn reductive that when serving the wine after +3 hours of sitting in a decanter, the wine was still very closed and even slightly skunky. I wonder if the wine is just now in a sullen, closed phase, or if this was only an off bottle, showing much more reduction than is expected from a Gonon at this phase? At least I don't see much comments here about the wine being particularly reductive, so I wonder if my bottle was just some how off? Anyways, you could taste how impressive the wine was underneath - and the last drops tasted after waiting some 6 hours were very great indeed. My score reflects how the wine performed this time, but most likely the wine will be worth so much more once the reductive qualities have subsided; if the other wines are as closed as this one, I expect them to clear after another 10 years of aging. Now the wine just needs plenty of rest. Good value at 41€.
Very elegant Gonon with purity of fruit and quite approachable now, if you have some to spare. Not the powerhouse that 15 is. Will be an excellent vintage to have side by side with 15 in the future

Dark, not quite opaque, the nose is holding its cards tightly, not giving much; on the palate I find dark, somewhat brooding fruit, touch of boysenberry, quite reserved and backward, with some nice lighter spice notes; a bit lighter weight than the 15 version, but quite deep and full bodied nevertheless, fairly tannic and tightly wound, with chalky tannins, some nice complexity, hint of violet, dried herbs, some crushed volcanic rock notes.
Shows great potential, all the pieces are here, just secreted away. Like a sleek, sinewy Siamese cat in a dark room, you can just detect its outline, and get a glimpse of its brilliant sky blue eyes. Not until it comes strutting out into the light in its own time will the real beauty be revealed.

Pierre Gonon’s St Joseph 2016 is, as expected, extremely delicious and also close to the definition of syrah from the northern Rhone. The fruit is suprisingly dark and is complemented by typical aromas like raw meat, bacon, black pepper, black olives and pine. Very nice texture, slightly chewy, and high acidity. Very, very nice today. Will probably keep and improve. Love this.

Inky dark color. Smoke-tinted dark fruit frame as well as sensations of Provençal herb, cured meat, violet, black pepper, and new leather.
Monsieur Gonon is probably the "go-to guy" in the Northern Rhône appellation of Saint Joseph right now. Clearly, we took a peek into a huge potential. Should be dancing by 2026 and drink over 2 decades after that. 92++/100.

At Au Pied de Cochon, Montreal with a PDC! Deep, ruby, with strong wet cellar/cobbles stink upon initial opening suppressing all fruit. After decanting balck fruit and leather, spice emerge. Dry, medium acidity, medium(+) firm tannin, medium alcohol and medium(+) body. Palate loads of black fruit, leather, mineral notes and loads of black pepper. Structured and robust, powerful wine able to balance the uber-rich food at this restaurant. Long impressive finish 90+ with additional cellaring.

After a blockbuster 2015 gonon, the 2016 was a more classic and elegant expression of syrah with similar tension and depth. Nose had some reduction, black olives, cured meat, black fruits, herbs and spice. Palate had a combo of elegance and power. Drinking well now before it shuts down. 92-93

Wonderful purity of purple clean fruit - contrast to the darker, more concentrated fruit in the 2015. Persistent crunchy fruit that finishes cool with acid. While it doesn't have the big mouthfeel of the 15 it makes up for it with balance and elegance. There's an underlying tension that pulls at the wine. Probably the most elegant clean gonon st joseph I've had yet. The contrasting vintages both have a significant place in the cellar.

Got my 6x pack few days ago, time to have an early look. Clean with intense floral nose, just beautiful. Wide open at the moment. Fairly light on the palate, more toward ‘11 style than ‘15. Different but probably just about as good as ‘15. Fruits driven with fine tannins. ABV 13.5% without a trace of alcohol, refreshing acidity. Graceful without weight is the best way to describe this wine. Seriously I yet to have a bad bottle of St Jo from this producer, just can’t do no wrong. The downside is that my allocation has been cut by 50% and price has gone up by 33%. Interestingly, this put on a lot of weight on the 2nd day, certainly higher density and concentration than ‘11 vintage, maintains good balance even with fruits recede and tannins emerge.

Darkly, burlier expression of gonon. Delicious and complete. I will say that it doesn't have a burst of red acidic fruit on the mid palate like some vintages do. This is definitely on the more stern side, but a very successful wine that will age well.

Excellent.

Vibrant acidity and without a trace of alcohol or any heaviness. Neil Young is humming the unplugged version (circa 1993) of "Long May You Run" on YouTube. For sure this wine will last a long long time with its excellent balance.
