This is such a different style, and again monumental. This wine just smelled long. I could just sense this before the first taste. There was a crispness on the nose, sharply of tart apple, baked breads, and hints of spice, and a slight hint of oxidativeness, that seemed just so right for this wine. The first swallow lead to a grin, it was full and rich, but so long and level, and incredibly balanced, and quite long. The fruit here was long and rich apple, pear, in a wet limestone bowl. Like the Salon, powerful and weightless, and perfect in its own way!

Wine Workshop: Clos du Mesnil vertical (Atera - 77 Worth Street in NYC): Super super young. Obviously the youngest of the group but then also just came across as a bit of a baby. It's incredibly soft and just kindof melts in your mouth. There's some of the mineral and saline but it also reminds me a bit of a toasted brioche with butter. Bigger initially but then just kindof disappears (in a positive way). More approachable initially than the '03 which was a bit more tight and closed up but I doubt this is showing all of its stuff either. Soft and enjoyable.

Krug Lunch (7x GC, 7x Vintage, 3x CdM, 1x CdA): 2008, 2004, 2002 Clos du Mesnil. All three showed their greatness but the 2008 and 2004 (both rated 94pts) were far to young to be enjoyed today, very much driven by the citrus core and high acidity. The contrast from the depth and impeccable structure of to the 08 CdM vs the mediocre vintage 08 is striking. The 2002 (97pts) was one of the wines of the tasting, showed a touch more mature than the others, more harmonious and balanced, creamy and incredibly layered. A masterpiece in the making which will at least need another 10 to 25 years to get to absolute glory.
TN: On the palate very expressive, round and creamy. Good, round but intense acidic backbone. Fine citrus, yellow fruit, herbs, minerality, lots of and brioche and buttery aromas. Very good, very round. Very promising. But not yet complex. All just citrus and loads and loads of salty minerlaity.

Krug Tasting (Memories Bad Ragaz): Krug tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. Main takeaways: 1/ Clos du Mesnil and the 1996 back vintage were show-stoppers, 2/ 164 was in a different league of the Grande Cuvée line-up, 3/ a general feature and maybe signature for Krug for me was the fine integration of autolytic notes into a balance of fruit and mineral notes. The textures tend to be soft with just a splash of cream and structures built around acidity. 4/ Clos du Mesnil towers over the vintage and GCs in terms of precision, complexity and elegance.
Tasting note: Cépage 100% Ch. 12 years on lees, degorged Q3 2017. This had similar features to the vintage 2004, again with fabulous intensity and a riper type of fruit complemented by caramel, almond and marzipan features. Harmonious and exhilarating palate with perceptible age.

This has seen a very positive develpoment over the last years. When I tasted it 2 and 3 years back I liked it but it was too tightly coiled and chalky to really seduce. This has now changed and the wine while still uber precise, almost laser like has started to coquet and is actually almost shockingly easy to drink (showing some nice relaxed citrus and pear notes and also started to reveal a faint hint of sweetness with air), especially so side by side the uber concentrated Clos d'Ambonnay 02 in this special Krug flight.

a tour de force of a chardonnay - the 2004 is an energetic whirlwind of a champagne. It's young but it's very presentable and delicious despite the material that still needs to unfurl. The electricity on this wine is bristling through high wire cables - everything is showing in abundance, fruit, acid, texture, power etc etc. I've had it a few times since release and I don't think it's yet to even budge from its youthful exuberance, but that's not necessarily a bad thing

I brought a 750 to dinner at 48 deg. And it was received and handed by the restaurant staff perfectly. The wine was supposedly young at this stage, though we found it nuanced and intriguing! Yes, structured but elegantly so. Relentless flavors follow every sip. We had to force ourselves to slow down and be in the moment, to be mindful as it tempts you to keep tasting again and again! Without a doubt it was the WOTN and for me the wine of the year, so far! Champagne wise! This was no minor soirée as it was our fathers 91st birthday! Needless to say it was immensely enjoyed by the family and especially the guest of honor! Thank you Water Bar Restaurant S.F, CA - what an experience! Thank you.

Krug Clos du Mesnil – Complete Vertical 1979-2006 tasted blind (Singapore): Medium yellow. One of the most shy wines on the nose of the night. Aromas of bee wax, minerals with umami on the palate. Krug Mesnil from a great Chardonnay vintage just has to be sensational, doesn’t it? Maybe it is but I’d have to wait a lot of years to find out. The spray of minute bubbles and couronne are beautiful. Faint nose. So, so tightly wound, all citrus and minerals, nary a trace of dough. Wonderful acidity. Very direct, not much detail or nuance. Based on history though, I would hope this could be the successor to the magnificent 1996 but impossible to predict just now.

2004 champagne horizontal (110 Taillevent London): A privilege to encounter this wine again within a few months. This time blind I was able to spot it. This had stealth, crispy mineral zip, very dry and laser like precision. This will benefit from another 10 years. Krug dinner at Farr Vintners (Farr Vintners London): What a great way to conclude the dinner. A treat and my first time with this champagne. Coming after the insanely good Krug 95 magnum this was obviously a lot younger. Quite pale in the glass, very poised and fresh, chalky on the nose. Some lingering citrus and manuka honey, it has great precision and is razor sharp towards the finish yet somewhat giving. This certainly needs more time. A privilege to drink, a very very good champagne but I am glad it hands down wasn't my WOTN which is good news for the wallet.

Kuki'o Wine Trip 2019; 9/22/2019-9/28/2019 (Champagne & Bordeaux): Sharp, tuning fork acidity. Not convinced this is ready. Actually, the Blanc de Blanc cream is already present. Not as thrilled with this as most others and actually finding a little more depth and weight in the 2004 regular vintage side by side at this point. At Krug so very fresh and tough to tell. Certainly fresh and with a lot of power in the background. Will revisit when my bottles arrive in a few more months.

bright champagne color, soaring nose, brioche and a particularly intense and tightly focused note of apple, a rich bright mousse already evident, a light citrus note and an almost peppery playful dash of acids, on the palate a primary baby but already quite beautiful with the broad and showy character of the vintage, apples, a bit of pear and citrus, long fine finish that builds beautifully, with time a sweet primary fruit comes into play and the mousse- while still not fully exposed- takes on a seductive dark tone, a really lovely Mesnil that promises to be generous and showy in time. Already quite approachable, but I personally prefer to lock this one away for a while.

Hanging out with Olivier (Chicago, IL): The nose on this wasn't particularly giving, but there were some elements of tart citrus, green herbs, and some other tart elements. It takes a while for things to emerge on the nose. The palate is taut, and the chardonnay character really shines through there, with plenty of sour citrus. This wine, while intensely coiled up right now, shows an incredible amount of potential: this is a spring of energy that is just waiting to be released. It's not particularly expressive now, but there is certainly a huge amount of upside.

A real powerhouse with ripe apple, baked apple and apple pie, showcasing both sweet and savory spice. Rich start, slightly shut down for now in the middle, but then an expanding finish that is almost explosive. Finish stays with me for over a minute. Cellar a year or two, then great for a few decades. Drink this before the 2002.

It's definitely more accessible than the 02 Mesnil I had last week, which was a more acid driven champagne than this one is now. Not that the 04 is wanting for acid, it has plenty, but it also has a more prominent presence on the palate.

Pie crust dough notes with more green apple, peach pit, lemony citrus notes, cool wet chalk in abundance; light, ethereal with a delicate light creamy aspect, quite elegant, until it lands in the mid palate. Powerful, intense with more pure chalk notes, more verve and lift than the '03, clearly a great BdB oozing pedigree and quality. Super long finish. Stunning wine. With Jerome Jacoillot of Krug at Effervescence.

Certainly fresh and with a lot of power in the background. Will revisit when my bottles arrive in a few more months.

Krug Paired with Great Music (Louis Vuitton - Chicago IL): Apple, baked apple, toasted baguette with floral and sweet spice hints. So powerful and dense with a very long finish. Better to cellar another year or two.

SLDS at Quay: Slate, lemon, sea spray, white florals, chalk - intense and superbly layered nose. Fantastically balanced palate, thrilling acidity wit mouthwatering flavour - there is both rich fruit and a mineral core. Driven and incredibly long. Stunning wine!

Great Grand Cru Burgundy Dinner with Friends (S.K.Y. Restaurant - Chicago IL): Powerful apple and baked apple aromas and flavors with floral hints and toasted baguette. Very powerful throughout, while already accessible, with a very long, engaging finish. So tasty now.

Served immediately after opening
bright champagne color, soaring nose, brioche and a particularly intense and tightly focused note of apple, a rich bright mousse already evident, a light citrus note and an almost peppery playful dash of acids, on the palate a primary baby but already quite beautiful with the broad and showy character of the vintage, apples, a bit of pear and citrus, long fine finish that builds beautifully, with time a sweet primary fruit comes into play and the mousse- while still not fully exposed- takes on a seductive dark tone, a really lovely Mesnil that promises to be generous and showy in time.

Disgorged 2016
Lemony nose, smells delicate, some yeasty and cakey notes
Very very fine bubbles, salty, lemony, lots of acidity, intense and very very dry. Firm acidity, even a little tight, but really extraordinarily beautiful, and so different to Krug I've tried before

Lazy sunday afternoon Krug event - Vertical of 160eme-166eme , some vintage brut, Mesnil and Rose.: I love how clean and driven the Mesnils are from Krug, especially in a vintage like 04 where the chardonnay shines so damn bright. The wines is elegant in its weight, but shockingly powerful on the palate with dry chalky white fruit that classic mesnil acid on the finish.
