Nose of Black cherry and blackberry and has leather saddle notes. Palate is lush, dark cherry, lush dark fruit with tenons that caress with an acidic backbone with a mid to last finish that goes forever. The tanins caress with a smoky and leather.

Rather tight on the palate upon opening, but aroma was really nice. Got better on the palate after 2 hours of decanting. Left the leftovers overnight and had it after 24 hours in a smaller bottle. Palate was more condensed and thicker.

Day 1: The appearance is somewhere between a clear medium ruby red and pale orange color with a very thin clear watery meniscus. The nose is still rather muted and ungenerous even after 4 hours decanting. But with few vigorous swirls in the glass momentarily reveals lively and deceptively sweet smelling red fruits, a fresh floral lift, old leather, raw meat with some gaminess, lots of brambly overtones and very little oak. The palate is on the lower end of full-bodied, round yet powerful, slightly bitter though not as much as I was expecting from this Italian varietal, understandably tannic though not unrelenting considering its relative youthful age, very well-structure, and balanced enough in my book despite the high 14.5% ABV. The flavor profile is quite interesting. Though many years off from being fully expressive at this juncture, it does show impressive array of flavors albeit short-lived including savory yet dry red fruits, mild tobacco, a certain herbaceous note reminiscent of a wet temperate deciduous forest in the fall season, worn leather, wet animal fur, mild cedar, faint oak and some diluted minerality all wrapped up in a beautiful multi-sensorial experience that continue to linger on effortlessly through its moderate long and warm finish. Paired very nicely with a few slivers of Pecorino Romano. In short, this BdM is still tight and very young. Will see how this turn out tomorrow. For now, I concur with many other CT tasters opinion that this is a very well-made wine from a great vintage that’s still very youthful with lots of potential and plenty of upside in the years to come. Day 2: The nose has opened up and became more generous. Likewise, the palate seemed to have gotten a fuller and more assertive with the fruit core coming to its own while the fine-grain tannins continues to make its presence felt. The emergence of the fleeting flash of tobacco-inflected minerality towards the finish is new and welcomed feature in to today’s tasting. Day 3: Much more integrated with everything pretty much open and ready to go. This final day’s tasting was the best among the three and hopefully an indication of good things to come.
Since 2012, I’ve started a personal tradition of opening and tasting a particular wine over a few successive Leap Year Days (2012, 2016 and 2020). The wine I had the last time was the Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. This time around, I chose this Brunello di Montalcino to be my new Leap Year Day wine. Hopefully, I plan to taste this wine again over the next 3 Leap Years (that's 2028, 2032, and 2036) to track its evolution and development. So check back in 4 years for my next update on this wine.

The leather on the nose suggests it is advancing but its not, its a typically well constructed young wine from a good year and a great producer. Plenty of time left but not a crime to drink now. Better on day two.

Chinese dinner over the weekend, with Xigong Kepong newbies.. AC and his son, VC and his family as well as KN and F. They loved the food there, and I was glad I could first share a Loimer Lenz Riesling then this BdM with all of them.
This has a softer and lighter mouthfeel from the previous experiences, with acidity which was M+ as well. Full-bodied but really well balanced with dusty tannins.
Nose was a little shy initially, then showed some red fruit with violet flowers as well as light cedar and tobacco too. Black cherry palate, and dark chocolate on the medium-long length finish, very pleasant indeed.
Aged for over 30 months in large French oak, this is a wine at a modest price point of USD 40-50, with such great longevity, and I really need to restraint from popping too many more bottles this year!
2016 was a warm but well moderated vintage without the excesses. Sufficient well timed rain, and significant diurnal temperature differences helped make this a 5 star vintage (Decanter).
Its a vintage which offers structured, ageworthy wines with profound depth, soaring acidity and plenty of drinking pleasure.
I loved this comment; ‘If we could control the weather by thermostat, 2016 is exactly how we would set it,’ said Francesco Ripaccioli at Canalicchio di Sopra.
Second bottle of 6 - per previous note, though this bottle has a lighter feel to it with more acid. More stewed fruit, Christmas pudding, prunes, bitter plum - everything held in balance with a dark cocoa weight.

Changed note to no rating to keep the whiners happy. it seems rating a corked wine is somehow inappropriate. Whatever. Amateurs. Some winemakers have a lot of corked wines and others (Rousseau,Vogue, for example) never do.
If I could magically remove the taint this would be a good bottle in the 90s but IT ISN’T. It is near undrinkable … thus low score. The winemaker contributed to this problem as it obviously left the winery with some sort of taint. So THIS BOTTLE has a low score.

Tasting with Dirk & Sean (Home, Utrecht): Slow-oxed for 4 hours. Still youthful, but already enjoyable. Medium intensity with cherries, blackberry, black currant, tar. Medium+ acidity, high tannins, long finish. 92-93

Nice garnet colour, fading to the rim. It was decanted in the morning and it begins to open up at dinner time: the nose is showing red cherries, cranberries, leather, camphor, some tea. With some time in the glass, mokka and cedar comes to the surface. Taste is good and pretty fresh, a lot of structure and a high tannin level. Vertical wine. The first out of 6 bottles, and the next one will wait about two years before opening. With time the score will be higher...I hope.

My first dip into this extraordinary vintage. Tasted blind and to be honest I guessed it much older, not saying it is approachable yet, but it was difficult to trace some primary aromas, maybe cause it was popped a day ago. Deep garnet with ruby hue. Medium+ intensity aroma of earth, leather, undergrowth, camphor, tobacco, faint touches of smoky cherries and violets. Full body, grippy and firmly structured with rich and high tannic structure and acidity, medium intensity earthy and smoky cherry flavours.

Really held its own against a line up of more mature barolo and barbarescos. Really great freshness to accompany the structure and fruit here. Excellent with the lamb and a real great demonstration of what a great value brunello this is. Excellent.

My first of 4 and wow! NOT WOW on opening though :). This started out pretty clenched and foreboding with big tannins, so I decided to decant it for the next 3-1/2hrs which worked perfectly to smooth out the bumps and open this baby up! For convenience I simply left it in the decanter for before dinner sips and straight on through. Pours in my Riedel Burgs. This is stunning and showing why many 2016s got rave reviews for their classic balance, purity and depth. This may be the best Il Poggione BdM I've ever opened going back to '04. Loved this tonight with Nita's homemade pizza. Give it lots of air if you want to see this shine! 14.5% alc went unnoticed. Serving temp in high 50s/ very low 60s. Loved it in my Burg glasses! 94+

Nice nose of dark cherry, leather, clove, dark plum. Well balanced on the palate with ripe fruit, some balsamic and herbs. Huge tannin on the finish with some heat from the alcohol. Juicy acidity. This is good, and I think it’ll improve and soften for 3-4 years, but personally I see no real reason to wait on these nor on Brunello generally.
Supplemented in response to comments:
Personally, I don’t think there is significant upside in aging Brunello. If we talk short-term aging, yes there’ll be softening but I think the essence of enjoyment is found in the vibrancy of their youth. There’s of course nothing wrong with drinking them 10-12 years after vintage (and If I had free choice between a 16 and a 10 today, I might choose the latter), but the upside is relatively marginal vs. the opportunity lost in storage cost/space. As a caveat to this, my palate enjoys austerity so this might not be true of others. It is a preference.
If we talk longer term aging (say 15 years+), my view is that Brunello doesn't belong among the world's great wines where such patience is rewarded. This is an opinion, but one I hold loosely, as I hope to have an experience that changes my mind.
Still early, but none the less enjoyable. Needs another 3 to 4 years to shed the very present tannins. Augurs well for the future with a rigorous backbone of acidity. My score is fairly conservative. This could reach 95/96 given time.

Garnet color. Aromatic nose after a day open. Herb, soil, wet earth, iron, stringent cherry fruit, even eucalyptus. Youth on the palate, with vegetation undertones, more stem and lead based soil. Well made, and good QPR for a classic Brunello experience .

Pop and poured. Initially pretty earthy and then nice sweet tobacco on the nose. The first couple of hours quite forward, in a medium bodied package thats elegant and pure with lovely sweet fruit and nice acidity. Later more energetic, but also more tight, with excellent black cherries. After 3 hours this is really tight. There's class here and its really interesting, but Im going to wait with this one.

Tasted after a 3 1/2 hour decant. With a plan to drink over 4 days. Medium ruby in colour with a garnet hue. Lovely aromas of sweet tobacco, floral & black fruit. On the palate, medium bodied black fruit, black cherry kirsch/blackberry, leather, slightly floral, a noticeable petrol/tar undertone, high acidity, high slightly angular tannins with a long finish to pepper, tobacco/chocolate. This is fantastic wine with infinite aging/improvement potential!
Deep violet with brownish tones. Classic Brunello. The nose is deep and sweet, dominated by sweet cherry jam, but also with intriguing notes of tobacco, cherry stone bitterness, wet earth and iron. Full bodied attack, sweet fruit up front, cherry jam is the closest analogy, fine acidity balances the sweet fruit, and the mouth is also covered with smooth tannins. Good balance between fruit, dryness and acidity, but the sweetness dominates a bit. Long aftertaste where tones of tobacco and citrus (!) lingers together with the sweet cherry. This is perfect for drinking now, but will keep well for at least a decade.

Very young. Needed lots of time to open (2+ hours). Nose was closed off. Some red fruit on the tongue initially but rushed over by acidity, alcohol, and tannins. Finish with wet soil. Lots of potential here, but needs lots of time. Granted I don’t have the palate of the pros, but am certain this will evolve over the next few decades.
Brief note. While young this was quite open for business. Very pure and linear mix of cherry, stone, gravel, lead and flower box. Good complexity and structure for the price.
Expected not to like this, but this really surprised. Vibrant red fruits, stewed tomato, herbal, with a bit of smoky reduction. Well balanced palate with plenty of body and very refined tannins, but very well balanced and a nice spine of acidity and comes across as light weight. No noticeable heat and a very long finish.
Got this for a steal at under $40, but it's well worth the current tariff at around 2x that price. It's young--probably too young--but quite enjoyable. Will definitely improve and glad to have a few more for the long haul.
Had some stubborn reduction on the nose despite a 4hr decant. Nice black cherry fruit, rather smooth and nuanced, with fine polished tannins. Comes accross modern and polished but there bright acidity and an austerity to the tannin that suggests some classic roots. Moderate finish. While accessible now, need to round out and add aromatic depth.
Young. Opened a bottle to see how it is progressing and was hit with an impressive tannin wall and bright acidity not totally balanced. Needs time probably another 6-10 yrs before I will approach again. Noticeable change in about hr 3-4 under decant. Once there, things began to mellow a bit and integrate more. It was here that I found things really started to add up for me. Will be solid in the future.
Has it come so soon.. My 450th review in Vivino! (Copied and transcribed into CellarTracker)
Bold cherry and red fruit notes with a nose which is starting to blossom, 3.5 stars today due to the tannins which were rather refined, but 4 stars as its got such a potential to be a great BdM perhaps from 2024 and onwards.
Lunch with E, S and CY with plus ones, at our regular Champignon. Great value food and super service here too, cheers!

Huge nose, dark fruits, forest floor, dried red fruits. Surprisingly smooth palate, not as tannic as I have found previous vintages. This is en route to a super future, I doubt it will ever shut down, but steadily improve. 94 -95 points potential in my humble opinion.
Medium til dyp granatrød. Fruktig, aromatisk og jordlig. Kirsebær, urter og tobakk. Ferske, stramme tanniner og høy syrlighet. Har godt av noen år til på langs.

Young, dusty red cherries with some herbs and flowers, tight on palate with very youthful tannins, chocolate and mocha with more relaxed vibes on day 2. Far too young but classic vintage with maybe a bit more heat than classic. Another good 2016 though below some other producers for sure
Coravin tasting pale ruby med+ aromas intensity of red cherries, raspberries, gooseberries, oak-vanilla, light tobacco, herbal spices still young & developing dry, high acidity, high tannins, med abv, med+ body, med+ flavors intensity consistent with the aromas, long savory finish, excellent complexity; optimal drinking as from 2023
This is more classy and elegant than forward and lush. In mouth it is sour cherry, leather, tremendously restrained fruit with tannins very much present. This will be a treat in time.
Dekantert. Virker noe ung. Dette går for å være en relativt billig kvalitetsvin. Blir bare kjedelig nedover i flasken. Pizzavin? Dag 2 samme som siste glass dag 1: kjedelig. Siste glass i sausen.
Terlato Cru Tasting (Ever - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Lots here with red cherry, red berry, leather, truffle, anise, cloves, tobacco and so much more. Yet the tannins and acidity obscure some of the great stuff for now. This has so much Old School charm, even if I found little pleasure right now, but would be very excited to taste again 2026 forward.
This is going to be a monster of a wine in 5 to 10 years. Right from the get go the wine had lots of reduction on the nose, have not experienced this with young brunello before. So put in decanter for 30min and it blew off. This wine has a massive structure with lots of blackberry and cherries but also a very nice acidity to balance this bold structure. Tannins are prominent. Also present are a good dose of clove and soya sauce. Very well made wine.
Big! and has that silky rich spicy opulence the 2016 vintage seems to have embued on all the Sangiovese from Montalcino. Hoping the prominent oak will integrate more as these age as the wood gives a grainy tannin texture over the satin of the vintage. Being picky criticising the wood influence- the wine is excellent value for money.
Vineum (Vineum, Rotterdam): No tasting note taken during dinner. Despite its youth very, very enjoyable. Decanted for 15m. Cherries, red fruit, plum. More in the cellar!
Evolved immensely over 5 hours. From light-weight red-fruited sangiovese to an avalanche of fruit, tannins and complexity and finally into a tight-knit wine. When it showed itself, it was fantastic!
Brilliant sangiovese and surpsrisingly good qpr - mint, dark cherry, herbs - serious concentration, dark minerality - I am not describing this well, but it is a fantastic wine.
Deep transparent red --- Nose fresh, green aspects, black tea, forest floor, elegant wood notes, cigar box, some flowery notes, some coal --- Palate fresh, nice acidity, cherries, sour cherry, some unripe plum, refreshing, light weight, nice acidity nerve, orange peel, some raisins --- Finishes rather long on elegant tartness, some red fruit and mineral notes. Classy, tasty, impressive. Showing so much elegance and strength. So much potential here -95-96, just in an early stage now -92.
