Nice nose with a riper fruit flavors, cherry, flowers, and underwood. Well balanced palate with more cherry notes, forest floor, spices, but maybe missing a bit complexity. Good finish.

A Burgundy Evening in New York (Union Square Café): Deep unevolved ruby. Medium to full bodied, sappy but not heavy. Perfectly ripe black and red fruit, a touch of herbs, earth, and gentle, round tannins. Meaty and deep although not especially complex yet. Not only promising but amazingly forthcoming and open for this particular site from this vintage. At least 10 years from entering its peak though.

Natebm-If wine was a portraiture of the winemaker, this would be a painting of an offspring of Godzilla and a Russian general invading Ukraine. Black hue, with uber extracted scents of burnt wood and the darkest fruits, northern rhone like, heavy in the mouth and very primary, with a truckload of fiery , brutal and coarse tannins. I find it not only unfriendly, but below the grand cru terroir level and absolutely not worth the price. Strange winemaking choices here, and first vintage for Nicolas Groffier.

The Groffier Bonnes Mares 2005 appeared unbelievably youthful, burst of dense dark fruits with tight grip tannins. I’ve encountered many 2005 reds have heated fruits and grippy tannins, but this Bonnes Mares is sleek and still has plenty of fruits left, one for the long haul. (91/100)

Smoked meat, mint, cocoa shortbread, black plums, grilled tuna, and wet leaves on the appealing and complex nose. Plenty of black fruit, a slight metallic note,; from mid palate on ,though, this is remarkably simple, like sucking on the last pitty bite of a very ripe black plum. A hint of lilac talc and black licorice on the finish, but this is still primary, and could well be 2 or 3 points higher in another 5 years, as more interesting secondary qualities arise. Hold this.

Had this at the Charleston off-line for Burgundy night.
This was part of the second Burgundy flight of the night, served along side the 1999 Lucien Le Moine Corton-Clos du Roi and 2006 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne
All of the wines were close to a pop and pour, so they were tasted slowly to allow some time to evolve in the glass. This started off somewhat closed with some darkfruit and barnyard. After some time, the barnyard blew off Started out more dense, without as much character. Developed into darker fruits with tart dark cherry, plum and some spice. Not as complex as the others, but worked better with food with the tea roasted duck with plum sauce

Charleston Offlineorama IV; 9/27/2018-10/1/2018 (Charleston, NC (various locations)): 3rd flight at Burg Thurs dinner - served alongside '99 Lucien Le Moine Clos du Roi and '06 Fourrier Clos St. Jacques. My least favorite of the flight. The nose on this is really funky - at first I thought it might be flawed. Although others at the table who know Groffier - confirm this is more normal for this producer. The funk blows off after a bit and smells just a bit more dark fruited and earthy. The color on this is by far the darkest and in taste I would say it is the fullest bodied and most brooding of the three. Darker fruits here (dark bing cherries and some plums), a heavier, denser mouthfeel and dried leaves and earth. Stylistically, not so sure this is a producer I would favor going forward - brought this as a backup/bonus bottle - having never tried previously.

Charleston IV - Return of the Collectible; 9/27/2018-9/30/2018 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Similar to the Corton this started a bit mustier in the glass. With time it went to more of the barnyard style. There's an underpinning of metallic notes here as well. I am not a regular burgundy drinker so take this with a grain of salt, but I thought there might be something a touch off with this bottle so I'm refraining on scoring.

Casual Red Burgundies (La Mangeoire): Beautiful bouquet already, best aromatics of the evening. Ripe red cherry fruit with fresh minerality. Powerful but well rounded. Very pretty and expressive but also well built. Curious spices intermittent with strong fruit. Second best wine of the night and was actually edged out by the 2002 Groffier Les Sentiers.

Outstanding bouquet. So complex with fruit, spice, and some floral notes. The palate is quite primary. Generous dark fruit, some oak. Not showing much now but the nose is stellar.

EWS -- Wild game and wilder wines dinner: Maturing and perhaps still primary wine. More typical nose of sour cherry, hint of clove. Young and lively, this wine best complimented stuffed quail -- there is plenty of acidity to accent complex dishes.

Full and forward nose of red and black fruit, spice and earth. Rich and round in the mouth and borderline heavy, but stops just short of being over done. Nice blue fruit note on the palate. This was surprisingly easy today and I have a slight concern this may not keep it together for the long haul, but it was still damn tasty.

Instantly recognisable as Bonnes Mares, yet Groffier has managed to make something ethereal and light and without the soft alcoholic saturation of a number of his fellow producers. This is a surprisingly light and delicate wine; a restrained nose gives little away other than its lack of heaviness and an anticipation of purity. Obviously this is early in the wine's life but after an (undecanted) hour the relatively suppine tannins are offering up a range of strong fruits - damson, mulberry and other autumnal stone fruits. The nose also develops over time and is saturated with violets (to be more precise artificial violets, as in flavouring, it becomes that strong). There is some length which finishes with a softer violet tone. There is a surprisingly not unpleasant medicinality in this wine.

HUB / HDH Bonnes Mares & Mersault tasting (University Club): Full red color. Forward dusty stinky early notes of wet socks - a singular and unusual aroma here. Better on the palate though the aroma characteristcs do show through. Black cherry and spice with beetroot notes and some tannins.
