It’s time to drink this one up, if you have any left. The fruit is on the richer side, and there’s some spice and pepper there, but further aging won’t do this wine any favors.

Slo-oxed for 10 minutes but better after 30. Dark red fruits and earth on the nose. The medium bodied palate showed mostly dark red fruits with a streak of lighter red fruit, some spice and some earth. The acidity was juicy but relatively balancing, with just a touch of tannin on the finish. May develop further but should hold for several years. Best with a good airing up front.

Spicy and medicinal, with red and black fruits, smoky notes, and some prune. The tannins are not especially high but are really grippy. It undershoots a bit on intensity and the length of its finish - it's just a bit dilute, but I think there is enough there that it will improve in the bottle, with more earthy notes appearing and the tannins softening a bit. There is an unpleasant bitterness on the finish.

Eye: mid ruby color Nose: mid strength, young wine (1day decant, quite smoother and more forest, earthiness) Dark plum, toasted red current, cider, tabacco, cranberry, chocolate, peppery
High-toned black cherry, some mineral aspects and a touch of tree bark on a complicating nose. Healthy acidity on the palate, with some tannin and a touch of heat on the finish. Slightly more extracted from what I can recall of prior vintages but overall enjoyable experience.

2017 Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos (Bierzo, Spain) This Mencia based red contains almost 10% white grapes from an unusually early harvest that began on August 21. Lovely black cherry aroma and taste with gobs of plum, strawberry and cocoa too. Round, soft, full, elegant and voluptuous. Lively acid with well integrated tannins. Lasts longer than a speech by Fidel Castro. Serious but fun. I once had this wine with blood sausage at a crowded tapas bar in Burgos while some Cannonball Adderley was playing in the background. One of those magical organoleptic goes orgasmelectric moments that then became transcendent when a local said, “MenTHEEah goes well with morTHEEah and MurTHEE, MurTHEE, MurTHEE.” Much easier to pronounce after three glasses of Pétalos.

So glad I bought more than 1 bottle. May have to get another case if available. It’s drinking very well now but it has some characteristics that make me believe it has several good years ahead. Deep dark red fruits, wonderful nose, medium to long finish.

I've had three or four vintages of this and I'm rarely disappointed. The '17 seems like a slightly different beast from earlier years - a little rounder and not as naturally juicy as I remembered. Perhaps less acid, or a hot year? But it opens out wonderfully in the glass, rich, smooth and plummy. Fantastic QPR at US$20/bottle; I found it for even less and grabbed a case.

Ruby with vibrant streaks of violet, moderately dense.
Moderately intense aromas of ripe red cherry and black raspberry. There is a floral quality, reminiscent of lilac. On the finish I get black pepper and leather.
Medium acidity and soft tannin with a gentle grip. Moderate finish.
Overall this was delicious and accessible; a really nice food wine.

11 months on from my previous note, I find this in much the same place. It's a very pleasant general-purpose, fairly light-bodied and refreshing red wine. Light acidity and light tannins balance the crisp dark red fruit and lead to a short-medium, but more-ish, finish.
(But I discovered today that it really doesn't have the oomph to stand up to any significant amount of chilli in the food.)
Medium purple color. Pretty explosive, with notes of black cherries, some strawberries, violet pastilles, licorice, some minerality too. It-s medum+ bodied, has medium acidity and some medium tannin. There is a touch of warmth. Good length. A very delicious and juicy Petalos from this hot vintage. Still good freshness and very good QPR.

This 2017 is just terrible. Had other petalos in the past and was impressed. This is so bad that I won't even turn into sangria. Bought at wine.com. yuk. Omg.
Rather impressed by this wine. I splash decanted and started to drink immediately. Initially it's a bit sweet and fruit dominated, but after a few minutes it settles down to a rather nice balance. Still with quite a pleasant red fruit nose, and on the palate a nice mix of that red fruit, a little acidity and light tannins. The finish is of moderate length and fruity with just a little bite.
All in all this is a very decent everyday red that would pair with many different foods. Definitely a rebuy if the price is right. For me US$19 is a little high, but certainly excellent at US$14-15.

The bouquet was like a basket of perfectly ripe red berries, mixing with violet florals, lavender, a hint of white pepper and smoke. On the palate, I found soft textures, like liquid silk gliding across the senses, yet also lifted and finessed (I’m not sure how they achieve this), opening with sweet violet pastilles giving way to peppery ripe strawberry, as minerals and spice settled in toward the finale. The finish was long, not necessarily on fruit, but on a mix of sweet and savory spices that seemed to saturate the senses, all kept fresh by lingering acidity. This is a different animal from the 2016, yet equally, if not more, enjoyable.

Good quality of Bierzo Mencia based dry red wine.
