Decanted 90min before serving. Sour cherries w/ a side of sour cherry dominate the nose and palate complimented by oak, leafy green herbs and citrus oil. Bright acidity w/ suave mouth coating tannins. Good food friendly Brunello.

Nice young Brunello that needs a couple of hours to open up. Great Qpr that drinks way above it price. Lower acidity suggests the it may not age as well as other Brunellos. Glad I bought a bunch that I'll drink over the next 10 years.

My first taste of the Caparzo 2016. I didn’t expect a lot, this is very early in the drinking window, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a table wine, best with red meat, pasta, or charcuterie. The nose is fairly complex with scents of lighter fruit, raspberry, cherry, and strawberry. The palate is firm and elegantly integrated with herbal accents and powdery tannins. Tuscan wines (mostly made with Sangiovese grapes) have a very distinctive character, not fruit driven, unlike California or Australian wines, for example. When I began to explore wines many years ago, I didn’t like them. It’s taken a while for me to come around, but I’ve come to appreciate their unique character. There is more in the cellar, but I think this Brunello will reward patience.

A very great value Brunello at only $33. Glad I purchased 6 bottles, and this is the 3rd I've had. Tart red cherry, light leather, earthy notes. Enjoyed with pizza.

Nice tart cherry and red fruit, still some pronounced tannins even after a 1.5 hour decant. Still, very nicely balanced and lovely with food, but tertiary flavors never really came out over the course of 2 plus hours. Very enjoyable, but maybe not memorable, if that makes sense.

Nose: Developing aromas of Morello/sour cherry, dried cranberry, black plum skins, dried herbs, (thyme, oregano, lavendar), sandalwood, dry earth/dust, oak, smoke, leather, tar, a little VA/medicinal that blows off with a decant.
Palate: Dry wine, med + body, med + acidity, medium tannins, med alcohol (13.5), med+ flavor intensity, and a medium finish. Palate follows the nose. I like the lack of new oak here, with a bit less of those international tendencies with over extraction and vanilla/new oak aroma/flavors, however, I found the finish to be a bit short.
Very good wine, can drink now suitable for aging (10+ years, IMO)

2nd of 6 bottles purchased and drank. Fresh, vibrant tart cherry, new leather, earthy notes. Nice BdM for the price but doesn't have the concentration of flavors of better BdMs. It's still an enjoyable wine.

It’s been cellared at my place for about 18 months. Tasted after a 3 hour decant. Served with roasted peppers, and classic spaghetti bol. Color: garnet with some onion skin tinges. Nose:shy nose with raspberry, cranberry tobacco notes Taste:good acidity and very agreeable tannin structure. Earth, iodine, tobacco and raspberries on the palate.
I like this wine and if you can get it in the $35-$45/ bottle range it would be a great buy. From my cellar it’s a great food wine. Not life changing but a solid Brunelleschi in that price range. Not sure it will get a lot better in the future.

16 months since my last bottle. Wine had developed a little, but still youthful.
Medium ruby red with mix of pink and brick rim. Dark cherry, raspberry, tobacco, oak, spices, tar, chocolate and black tea. Medium-high acidity, medium-high tannin, and complex. Long tannic finish.

Bel Brunello!

I first opened this on pnp and was a bit disappointed. It has some very classic earth, tobacco, leather on the nose along with black fruits like black cherry, blackberry, etc. However the palate was pretty one dimensional and the acid and tannin were not where I was expecting for a 2016 brunello. About 2-3 hours later, the structure had come to life (have no idea chemically how this happens) and the palate had lengthened out. It still was a bit simplistic and I would like some red fruit character in my sangio, but it became a very enjoyable drinker with a lot of old world terroir expression and good tension. In the end I can't say im too upset with the wine, but definitely air this out or give it a few more years in the bottle. In might last 5-7 more years before it starts to decline.

This medium-to-deep garnet wine was decanted through a Vinturi aerator and allowed one full hour in carafe prior to commencement of a three-hour tasting. Fully unfolding after the first two hours in decanter, it reveals an impressive bouquet of red bramble fruits, Montmorency cherries, baking spices, violets, dried herbs and loamy earth. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic, proportionately oaked and without any heat from its 13.5% alcohol, it delivers flavors mirroring the aromas. At this stage the tannins are still somewhat rustic and are pervasive on the dense mid-palate. Lengthy but a touch astringent on the finish, this is a terrific Brunello that will get even better with a bit more cellar time (at which point it may merit an even higher score). Drink 2025-2036.

2016 Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino ($42 in 2021). Light-mid ruby, amber edges, viscous (13.5 alc.); old world, red fruit, mushroom, light earthy undertones; mid acids/tannins; balanced; long semi-deep red fruit and wood finish; nice style. w/beef. 16.5-17 UC Davis scale, 91-92 other scales.

This is such a stellar bottle for the price. Sanguine notes lead the way, with beef blood, leather, and black cherry coalescing throughout. Juicy acidity, ample minerality, and light tannins emerge late, lingering on the long finish. Still a baby, and will only improve in the coming years.

Classically built with expressive plum and black cherry intermixed with some earth and mineral notes. It's medium bodied and balanced but a bit firm with nice dusty tannins that show on the finish. Extended decanting subdued the wine a bit and the tannins but it came back alive with food. This is very good right now but expect it should improve nicely over the next 2-5 years. Really nice wine and a heck of a qpr for Brunello.

Lonny's btl at our inaugural "old guys lunch" for retired members only, in our regular wine group. This was PnP & likely would've merited an extra point or two had it seen a few hours of air or better yet a 2hr plus decant. It was fun & informative to taste, as I've so far, not touched my '16 BdMs. The critics have hailed the vintage but uniformly point out, these need time. I concur, but w/a big decant trying one now should be fairly rewarding. Especially, if you have at least 2 more for down the road when these will really show their stuff around 2026+. Color is a semi opaque ruby red. Tannins were palpable with food. A little more challenging stand-alone but smoothing out with air. There's still a little vanilla to integrate. The fruit is pristine and promising. There's earth along w/ hints of emerging herbs & faint leather. And, just a tiny dash of cigar. This simply needs time but went well today with assorted pastas and my cup of minestrone soup at Biaggis in Maple Grove MN. Today's experience around 90pts with plenty of upside in a few years or via decant now.

Ordered a glass at a restaurant. From the excellent 2016 vintage. This estate has been making Brunello since1970. I previously had the 1993, 2008:and 2010. Among those, only the 2010 was better in my opinion. Crimson color. Notes of cocoa, currants and oak. Firm tannins. Well balanced with good length. This is still very young but was rather approachable now. 92+ points
Dark cherry, chocolate, tobacco, dried leaves, well meshed together with good acidity and tannin. Wine is fresh and youthful but approachable. I would decant the wine for at least 2 hours to soften the tannins, or better yet, laying them down for another year or two before trying another bottle.

Decanted for 1.5 hours. Aromas of rose petal, tar, iron, earth and raspberry. Flavors of raspberry, tar, iron, rhubarb and sour cherry. Ends with a big finish of 30-35 seconds with iron notes. Still a bit tight. May update as it gets more air.
Excellent wine. This will go down as the most Burgundy-esc Brunello I've had, to date.
If you get this bottle give it a minimum 6 hour decant before drinking, at this stage, as it only barely started to show with that much air.
If you love fine Burgundy, you'll get into this bottle as it was subtle in its flavors, elegant in its composure, but assuredly needed at least 5 more years in the cellar for those complexities to shine as intended. I regret that I killed this baby.
At first decant it was very closed, but faint tart and earth poked through. Its initial palate was quality, with length but obviously needed air.
3 hours in it had some plums and raisins on the nose with musk and exotic spices. In the mouth is had very dry, fine and elegant spices with bits of powdery silk that held roughness that needed to be aged out.
6 hours later it seemed very Burgundy-like in its complex subtlety. A very expensive, tight-knit French oak influence was detected. Licorice and other herbs started to show. I had the impression of fine teas, hibiscus and light tobacco.
At heart, I’m a barbarian, harkening back to my Viking roots with my love of funk and real in my wine and beers. I like my mouth to grip onto something not as subtle as this, though it’s not lost on my palate, it’s just not what I normally enjoy or crave. It’s a great fine wine for sure, unique in what I’ve so far encountered in this DOCG, but will not buy again. I must give a huge, hearty congratulations to the winemaker though, for having made a fantastic wine for this price. Burgundy fans should snag this up for it will be enjoyed 10-20 years from now with critical acclaim for its finesse.
Ripe red berries, fresh and pleasantly lean, with some nice minerality, good acidity and manageable tannins. Already approachable, but will continue to improve for several years.
Young Brunello that still needs time show it full potential. Better and definitely more open on day 2. Still a bit closed on the nose but black fruits and sour kirsch peeps out. Dry w. med. acidity and plenty of tannins. Good balance but mostly liquorice while fruit is reduced. A bit rough. 5-10 more years wouldn't hurt.
Agree w others that this is a bit lighter. Classic Brunello appearances/color and flavors. Drinking well now or can age (but not required). Purely on taste I’d go 89-90 but will bump to 91 for excellent QPR
Medium garnet colour. On the nose, black cherries, raspberries, cassis, tobacco and touch of vanilla. Nice medium body with velvety tannins that recede as the wine sits. Cherry candycane, raspberries in cream, blueberries, milk chocolate and a touch of tobacco oakiness. Nice medium long finish with red licorice.
Very nice wine, paired with simple homemade pizza, which totally worked.
Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. Grapes come from vineyards in the four main quadrants of Montalcino, with different soils, elevations and exposures. Med garnet. Clean, med (+) intensity, with black and red cherries, dried herbs, espresso, tobacco, earth and wet stone. 2 years in used oak casks adds polish without covering up the fruit. Dry, consistent with the nose, with med (+) to high acidity, med (+), grippy, tannins and med (+) alcohol (13.5%). Medium to full bodied, with med (+) flavor intensity and length. Drinking surprisingly well for such a young Brunello, it is made in a lighter, fresher style. Solid QPR.
Montalcino 2021 Brunello Trip; 8/26/2021-9/1/2021 (Montalcino, Sienna Province, Italy): Eighth Brunello wine from my 2021 Montalcino trip - the 2016 Caparzo. Brown and Burgundy colour, soft aroma. First Brunello taste of soft dark cherries, blackberries with a quick finish. Long earthy linger with hint of peppers and spice. Another good wine at good value.
louis brought my bottle which i had purchased at central wine merchants and which we were supposed to taste together at home to Laura Guido's house warming. He was so surprised to see me there that he spilled the first pour. He served it to me in a plastic water cup since he had only brought wine glasses for himself and ellen. He reported that he had given it a triple decant at home. Yet, it still needed 30 minutes for fruit to emerge and to balance tannin/acid components. Couldn't swirl or further aerate due to the nature of the cup, so it was hard to fully assess the wine. the wine did improve and open up a bit over a one hour drinking window. it seems to have everything necessary to develop into something very enjoyable. this wine needs many years to mature at which point i assume that it will show more favorably.
Nose: Metallic in profile, shows hefty iron and tin notes together with dried cherry and a hint of rose oil.
Mouth: A deep pool of ripe black cherry and cassis glide through ahead of interspersed red florals, balsamic, cast iron and a bevy of tannins that clip the fruit for now. Acidity as well is a rush to the finish line, but everything stays intact throughout. Very, very long in the mouth, with huge amounts of drive.
Overall: Still very young and astringent, but has excellent potential in the fabulous purity of the fruit and the acidic back end. Some tertiary notes show already, which will continue to develop beautifully over the next 20 years. Drink 2025 - 2038.
Medium-deep reddish garnet in color. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, herbs, spices, iron notes, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, mulberries & plums with earthy, spices, some herbs & minerals. Lingering dry finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing but has the fruit & structure to continue development from further aging at which time it may merit a higher score. Very good QPR. May be the best Caparzo Brunello I have tried to date!
Decanted for 4.5 hours. Aromas of tar, rose petal, raspberry, earth and touch of iron. Flavors of raspberry, tar, cherry, earth and touch of iron. Ends with a 30-35 second finish with raspberry and tar notes.
Decanted 2 hrs Very, very good. Probably should not be drinking a ‘16 this early….Based on early results it seems it will only get better though. Great QPR.

2016 Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino ($42 in 2021). Light-mid ruby, amber edges, viscous (13.5 alc.); old world, red fruit, mushroom, light earthy undertones; mid acids/tannins; balanced; long semi-deep red fruit and wood finish; nice style. w/beef. 16.5-17 UC Davis scale, 91-92 other scales.

Still young, but a lovely and balanced Brunello with the classic cherry fruit flavours still ripe and fresh.

This is such a stellar bottle for the price. Sanguine notes lead the way, with beef blood, leather, and black cherry coalescing throughout. Juicy acidity, ample minerality, and light tannins emerge late, lingering on the long finish. Still a baby, and will only improve in the coming years.

Bright and clear. Bramble and tar on the nose. Wine seemed a bit thin relative to expectation even after decanting.

Keep.

Solid QPR.

Mørk rubin, såvidt gjennomskinnelig, rød med litt brun tone.
Deilig støvete og frisk i nesen, tomat, kirsebær. Lær. Flott balansert, god fruktsødme men ikke tung.
Smaken følger nesen. Litt alkoholvarme merkes, men ikke for mye. Frisk syre! Akkurat passe støvete tanniner. Middels fylde, middels lang. God balanse.

Medium garnet.
95.
