Charleston VI; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Admittedly this is one of my favorite producers in the region which I'm sure colors my thinking. This is more woodsy again and not the clear fruit that I tend to love. Very light though and elegant. Maybe a background of pomegranate? And some rosewood? Nice.

BWC X1 Dinner - Hawksmoor: So open, so lovely. A hint of cherry cola, but in the nicest way. This is ready for business and pulls you in. 1/8 of a glass was not enough - this would have been a wonderful wine to contemplate over the course of an evening. Thanks M for bringing this - very nice!

Roumier's 2001 Clos de la Bussière is delicious but still quite youthful tonight with an appealing mix of rusticity and sappy berry, some gamebird, really quite nice. Medium full in body with teeny but grippy tannins and a fine acidity. Very good and well-stored bottles should drink well for another decade.

The first bottle I opened was the '02 Chambolle. Lovingly stored since release. Destroyed by tca. This Morey was very good. It started off very tight and a bit funky. There were notes of meat, leather and musk. It has a seriously savoury base of geological matter. Tannins are relatively firm and acidity bright. With air dark cherries intensify at its heart. I rarely decant red Burgundy but should have with this one. It is supremely youthful and I'll wait another decade or so before popping my last bott.

2001 Restrospective (Gray Newman's): Beautiful, very ripe raspberry/blackberry pinot fruit, with hints of floral and meatiness. Dense and concentrated, with stylish gliding tannins and elegant acidity and a long berry finish. Shown up only by the Rousseau CSJ alongside, it doesn't quite have the same presence or gravitas. But lovely nonetheless.

Intense opening nose of black cherry, menthol, and eucalyptus, with damp earth tones. Nose reminiscent of black cherry halls. Palate delivers loads of tight young red cherry and tart cranberry. Some spices on both nose and palate. Nice minerals throughout as well. Oak hanging around. Already very pretty but still young with plenty of room for development. Big tannins. Certainly makes for hedonistic drinking if lacking tremendous complexity right now. A solid wine to enjoy now but would keep revisiting over a few years.

Deep, spicy nose that is a little beefy/meaty. Dark fruits, beautiful robe, minerals and some sauvage. A bit of funk on the palate with sour cherry, plum, gentle spices. Sour, spice and dark fruit on the finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16/20.

Nose was complex with hint of flowers and wild berries initially, then it evolved into meaty black fruit and dried meat. Palate was fleshy with good structure and depth. This is very young. It will take a few more years for it to open up fully.

3rd of 3 and lovely stuff, red fruit driven, slightly earthy, very long and classy for what it is, a slow developer, typical of Roumier. Fine (17.5/20).

Totally not what expected. nice structure but the wine was definitely bigger and more brawny. Quiet muscular but not in an over powering way. Overall a very enjoyable bottled and would love to try in a year or so. Palate was smooth and quiet a bit of dark fruit.

From 75cl, perfect cork, slight staining back to 1cm. Best 2 hours after opening, this rock-solid, beautiful MSD really does bridge Chambolle morello-cherry-tartness and Gevrey darker-fruit richness. Plenty of forest floor/ dried mushroom action, at no time distracting from the linear, pure, sweet, bright cherry/raspberry fruit, balanced by perfectly ripe acidity. Long finish. No, this isn't great wine, it isn't complex or layered, but it is just delicious and – for its class and price range – outstanding. Ready to drink, but no hurry. 90P(+)

Dinner at Simon's and Kevin's (TriBeCa): Perfect blood ruby, just barely starting to brick. The nose is hugely, hugely perfumed and just gushes from the glass like a Playmate from a brassiere. Rose and sweet cherry, with a gorgeous line of herb running though it -- sage; wild, sauvage, red plums and raspberries -- very red fruit. The palate is the same: sweet cherry liqueur, pomegranate juice; loads of glycerin. Powerful and weightless, the Burgundian magic trick. Excellent length. Great wine. (This was a terrific bottle following a (very, very) corked one last week.)

The first smell of this was intoxicating, but then it settled into young pinot that I liked but didn't love. Nose of strawberry, raspberry, and orange zest. Zingy and stemmy and tart with sour cherry and animal fur. Palate of sour cherry, citrus, juicy, soft-dusty. Serious cherry, sour, and meat. Needs 10 years. Finish of sour cherry and minerals. Nose - 5+/6, Palate - 4.5-5+/6, Finish - 4-4.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5+/2 = 14.5-16/20.

Showing great, an unctuous almost sweetness to the fruit. Cola, soy, cassis notes. Youthful at over a decade old. Caveberry/blueberry swirled in and out.

Salty, earthy with cherry and strawberry. Elegant and feminine. Floral. Very Chambolle like. A touch of green on the palate (a very small hint of geranium). Darker finish. Took some time to develop mid palate but somehow on the lighter side (vintage?). Finish is interesting and somewhat long but with dry tannins. Except for the dry tannins (even if this is not that bothering) I would say this is a wine with still a good 6-8 years ahead of good drinking, if again the tannins are not getting drier and drier to the point of spoiling the finish and palate. But this bottle was a pure pleasure to drink.

This wine is finally starting to show a little something beyond tannin. While the nose still seems tight and brooding there is a distinct appearance of hearty red fruit shimmering in the mid-palate that has not been there, in my experiences, previously. While still tannic it is no longer stiffly so. There is good lengthening in the back of the wine and I think this wine, given 10 or more years more, could really be one special Bussiere.

Nice nose, cherry and a whiff of pipe tobacco. Sour cherry on palate. Nice transparent red color. This Burgundy reminds me of a young-ish nebbiolo wine more than any Burgundy I can remember. It is an object lesson on the taste relationship between the 2 regions, Piedmont and Burgundy. I'm not sure that this wine would be worth the replacement cost to me, but it is a pleasure to drink, and I am glad I have another bottle to keep a few more years.

Nose: hay, barnyard, smoke, dried cherries, strawberries candied/syrup, bit of licorice and menthol. Taste: violets, wood, smoked meat, cherries Nutshell: bottle was wonderful but I think will improve w/age and the earth notes will come as much to the taste as they did in the nose, even though '01 was not uniformly good in Burgundy, I thought this was a very good wine

This is a very good wine that yells "Burgundy" in both aroma and taste. The Roumier wines I've had have been clean and precise in their fruitiness, but with appreciable hints and nuances of earth and forest floor. This was an excellent match for Saigon cinnamon topf cooked chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I really liked the wine, and will seek out this producer in the future.
