Dinner at Coulisse (Amsterdam, NL): [Restaurant purchase] This showed beautifully tonight. Medium+ intensity on the nose with typical CF aroma’s but in an complex and elegant way: green bell bell pepper, hint of barnyard, earthiness, red fruit, cranberry. Medium+ acidity, long finish. 93-94

Very brett dominated wine with barnyard notes / animal funk - too much for my palate to still fully enjoy. The fruit is slightly oxidized in this bottle, more iodine and forest floor flavors, violets and graphite, hint of salty minerality, a bright but slightly volatile acidity with some green pickle flavors. Fine tannic structure, with still a bit of grip. Overall, I found this was a rather rustic and somewhat unbalanced wine. I was a bit underwhelmed, but maybe this just not my style of wine. The other Loire Cabernet Francs tonight did not thrill me either. - 90 points

Beautiful dark, clear ruby color and a dynamite nose of red fruit, herbs, hay, and barnyard. When this beauty hits the palate, that nose just unfolds and the volume of flavor on a mid-weight frame expands. There's grip, but nothing harsh. This has an elegant texture, but the flavor is rustic. It's got slate-like minerality, softness, wet haw, evergreen forest, and animal funk. You can go ahead and dive in. It's ready and not holding back, but it's also young and has a lot of time left.

PnP'ed. Brought this to a (2nd-round) drinks session. This initially had that bit of "natural'ish" note, but gradually blew off, showing notes of dark-cherries, plums, toast/smoke & florals that came forth, with that teeny bit of leafy'ness in tow. This was so suave & elegant on the palate, with grippy (but silky) tannins. Nice concentration of blue-to-dark berries/fruits, this was certainly drinking well. Most if not all guessed Burgundy (mostly Gevrey, Morey) with just a single exception. No doubt it'll be even better with more cellar-age and complexity.

Louis brought this interesting wine to the family gathering. It was my first Cabernet Franc wine from Loire. The pale ruby color was similar to my familier Pinot, so as the nose with more oaky feel. The palate was sharp but structured to age well.
My wife says this smells of dried banana. Then she said it smells like fruit at Foodland - where they spray the fruit to make it look fresh and the smell gets everywhere - which is a brilliant descriptor. To me it has a volatile element in the nose. But also a lot of fresh fruit, so much fruit! I can’t distinguish. The volatility blew off after a while. On the palate this is really lovely, elegant and fresh but with more substance than pinot. Complexity, freshness, complexity… just wow. (My first Rougeard)

Dinner at Triple Crown (Chicago, IL): Showing quite stern today, despite the riper and sweet exposition of the fruit and moderate pyrazines, on the back end there is heaps of tannin; it's pretty clear at this point this is a wine that needs a good decade to reemerge.

A truly great bottle. This 2015 was excellent, and came off as especially elegant and approachable in light of the vintage. At 12.5% alcohol, transparent ruby in the glass this has notes of red plum and capsicum. Its softened, polished tannins with minimal wood influence are just silky. This is a delight to drink now and should be great throughout its lifetime.
My first Rougeard. Wow! Lives up to expectations but was much more polished and elegant than expected. I was expecting a more rustic powerful wine. This showed very well upon opening not requiring much air. Elegant nuanced nose with leafy tobacco and eucalyptus notes with a hint of white pepper. Palate is suave and seamless, with an ethereal character quality (never had that with CF before). Lengthy finish adding some tobacco notes to a black cherry fruit core.

Very nice but would benefit from a bit more cellaring. It is clearly from a warmer vintage and it shows a bit more fruit power while lacking a bit of acidity compared to other vintages such as 07 and 2010 for instance. But as always Rougeard performs and is a treat.

A tad on the riper side with less herbal notes compared to the 2014. Still quite lovely flavors of pure red cab franc fruit and some light tones of green vegetables and damp earth. Would hold off a few years for this to gain more complexity but a delicious drink now if you like lots of pure fruit.

Plentiful red fruit and hallmark pepper soar from the glass. This was a pop and pour but enjoyed over a couple of hours. This was everyone's wine of the night. Perfect texture and length. I have never assigned points to a wine but if I did this would be a 114!

Not rating this wine, it's too young. It had a surprisingly floral nose I am not used to see for a Saumur-Champigny. Not animal or bretted at all. However the alcohol and vegetal side was not integrated to the rest at this point. This really needs to wait.

No longer quite the deal it was many years ago but still a wine that I just love even the most basic version of it. Dark fruits and this sense that reminds me of being deep in a forest a few days after it's rained and then a bit of that classic cab franc towards the end. Always interesting and drinking quite well even if I'm sure it would improve with time.

Decanted 1 hour prior in a Zalto Axium decanter. Amazing nose, complex bright red fruit, earthy loam soil, some faint green pepper, dried herbs, and green stalky vegetables. After a short decant this wine was singing. The wine is full bodied with a tannic structure but it has so much freshness that everything falls together. This is one of those wines that is so interesting and delicious that it is hard to put the glass down. I can't wait to see how this ages if I can find a way to keep my hands off the other bottles.

The lightest and obviously the most ready to go now, this shows some lovely red cherry fruit on the nose and just a mild hint of pyrazines. What strikes me here is the overall elegance of this wine. Nez envoûtant qui pinotte presque, mais qui révèle des notes classiques de poivron rouge, framboises et cèdre. Blind side by side with the ‘15 Guiberteau Motelles, these were basically indistinguishable. Light bodied, subtle, and not showing much cab franc typicity. Pretty good if you like the style, but no reason to pay 3x for the Rougeard. The Guiberteau feels about right at $50. Should continue to age fine in a Burgundian type of way.
