Floral, midweight. Has that elegant wine "clarity" that I adore. Tannins are moderate and appropriate for nebbiolo. Acids, tannin, and fruit balance nicely.

Well aged, still a deep ruby colour. Nose of dark cherries. Palate shows some sweet licorice indicating some modern winemaking - but while the wine cannot be described as ethereal, it is quite nice. Well stored bottles can surely go another 5-10 years no problem.

Glorious! Still very young, needed a good 1.5 hour decant, but then it soared. Fabulous rose-petal aromatics, great length and energy, interesting tarry element on the finish. Wish I had a lot more!

In line with my past tasting notes, in that I was expecting an older, somewhat faded wine, and to my surprise, this wine again performed like a young stallion. Indeed, this was the wine of the night among some solid others. Deep, dark cherry fruit core with menthol notes and still firm tannins. Surprisingly deep and dark, but also with a power that is both youthful yet also tempered by a bit of age. A solid performance. No degradation overnight. Edgemont guys, my place.

Bricking and looking a little stewed. Vibrant nose of tea, beef, cherries and raisins. Smooth and integrated on the palate with a touch of heat on the finish. Seems fresh but secondary characteristics are very much to the fore.

Surprisingly robust and youthful on the first night, with vibrant and precise cherry fruit, violets, menthol and herbs, and tannins that are still thick but soft. Really enjoyable. The second half of the bottle, which I had poured into a .375 and corked as soon as the bottle had been opened, did not last; brown and dry.

I found a stash of these bottles while cleaning up the cellar. Bought years ago, I think from Garagiste. I thought it would be a pleasant, village level wine that would be at peak and ideal for current drinking. I found a much more structured, darker and youthful wine than I expected. Good core of cherry fruit with some mossy forrest notes. On the first night, very dry tannins, in need of air to open up and soften. I didn't get back to this wine until the third night (I was at the Winebow/LoCascio tasting on the second night). On the third night, no degradation, no oxidation, with a deeper, more focused core of dark cherry fruit and now grainy tannins. Surprisingly robust and youthful still.

Double decanted, drank over 4 hours. Cork was 50% soaked through but no impact i think. Colour is ruby, with mild bricking (less than would be expected). The aromatics are great - cherry and tar wih flowers - a 93/94 nose. The palate is finesse and balance but not as complex as nose may imply. A tiny bit of oak but way less than 4 years ago and it is integrating nicely. Chalky tannins attack your teeth at the end, telling me this could be better in 2-3 years time. Certainly has not peaked.

A decent Barbaresco. Decanted 2 hours. Smooth, balanced, ready now, but no hurry. Performance on the second day is ok although with a dry finish. Essential to accompany it with food. Worked well with a goulash. Note: cork was 50% soaked, but the wine was unaffected (?). Would the cork have lasted a few more years? I don't know. Didn't want to take the chance.

Smooth, dry and strong with lots of fruit in the finish. Cool evolution; honey, cinnamon, cocoa, tar. Sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, still sort of astringent. When it all settles down cherry and plum fruit is dominant, the rest is still there but eclipsed. Just barely entering its drinking window at best.... years off from being truly mature?

Nose of classic Nebbiolo, with rose, cherry, tar, pine, and dusty earth. Puckery tannins persist. This should be drinking well in a few years, but can certainly be enjoyed now with decant or aeration.

We cannot say we are experts on Barbaresco. We enjoyed this. 1 hr decant or so. J says there is a smokiness. O sees nice tannins. Maybe a little leather. Great food wine. Not a lot of fruit. More like a perfume. O is going wild strawberry. J can't disagree.

Decanted and evaluated over the course of 2 - 3 hours. Nose of light cherries, rosewater, and some dry earth with hits of cough-drop / medicinal notes. The cherries become brighter with more air time. The tannins keep it tight at first but let it breathe for cherries and tar on the palate, which evolves to becomes more medicinal- Luden's cough drops. Almost no finish on the back end, even the palate is thinner and weaker than expected from a Barbaresco. Definitely out of balance and acidity seems lacking (odd for Nebbiolo). It is an average Barbaresco (B-) and at the price of $50 (C), I am ultimately disappointed as I know that outstanding wines were made in 2004, warranting an overall rating of B-.

V. v. closed and tight on opening, opened slowly over the evening to become a wine of good structure. Nothing noteworthy, though -- never got to tasty on the undrinkable/drinkable/tasty scale. Will wait awhile for the next and hope the wine gods work some magic, but I'm not especially hopeful

This was double decanted about an hour before serving, at cool room temp. Light prune and rose aromas just spilled from the glass. Not stewed or too ripe. In the mouth there is oomph and structured, big tannins, but nothing seems out of balance. Nothing super oaky (I'm not as sensitive to it as others). As the night wore on, I kept coming back to this bottle.

Really excellent. Deep, truffled, tarry and rose laden nose. Great power and depth but silky and not weighty or extracted. A slight, discreet touch of wood. Perhaps a tiny bit more oak than the Vajra but still at a level I would say is extremely discreet and not the least offensive. Excellent and a killer value.

Medium bodied with not much complexity. Tannins have mellowed but there is not much flavor to offer. It's good but that's about it. Not worth the $27 Garigiste charged.

Popped and poured (restaurant purchase). Enchanting nose of stone, earth, dust and mushrooms. Wine needs a significant amount of time for the palate to get in line with the nose. Absolutely crazy tannin structure on the palate. Really needed food (and fat at that) to show decently. Without an accompaniment, it just beat you up. Wouldn't mind purchasing a few of these and seeing what it developed into in about 5 years. Would purchase again.

Popped and poured; this could use a decant though. Garnet/ruby color. Lovely nose of red cherry, cherry skin, pine, dusty rocks, and some roses. Broad and precise at the same time. Puckery tannins are evident early. Nice medium finish, a hint of candied cherry in there on the end. I'd hold this for several more years.
2004 Produttori de Barbaresco Tasting (Zupan's, Portland, OR): Rich cherries and earth all over the nose here. Fruit bomb incoming? The fruit is rich and bright on the palate, but not overwhelming. There are plum, blackberry and raspberry flavors that show up right away. Some nice tannins build and linger through the finish, where a tiny amount of bitterness shows up. There is some enjoyable minerality that appears on the side of the palate as well, and I find this pretty interesting. Good stuff.

2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva (and a few others) (Burnside Zupan's (Portland, OR)): Very fruit forward for Nebbiolo, but very pretty floral aromas, along with some rocks. Again, big and bright on the palate, no real acid, but tannins are present to go along with the nice strawberry flavors. Big tannins on the finish and quite tart. Disappointing at first with dominating woody notes (caramel) but this is just too young. Closed up tight, after a few hours started to show some depth, with complex red fruits and smoky, tarry notes. Recommend waiting on this or decanting several hours.

From 375ml. This was not at all open for business, so back into the fridge it went for a few days. Tonight it still needed a few hours in the glass to unwind. Nice young nebbiolo. Decanted 1.5 hours before dinner. Initially berry-like primary flavors with a sweet tarry nose. Over time, the berries drifted off, and a dark brooding fruit with some black cherry appeared with licorice and tar heading to a drying tannin finish that had a touch of mocha sweetness to it.
