Garner color. Nose of delicate floral notes, damp cellar, leather. Cherry and strawberry fruit on the palate with earthy underpinning and sweet dusty tanning. Moderate acidity. Medium length finish of mulberry fruit and earth. Nice with pizza.

Emily's Graduation Dinner - from fuzzy memory, slow ox'd 6 hours before serving; initial taste was of dark fruits and earth. Dense in the mouth with a lingering finish. Was definitely the most preferred of the '99's served.

In a way this is the perfect cross between a Barolo and Burgundy, but that's not fair to this wine because this is indeed a Rioja. Floral nose, a whiff of cinnamon, but once again it's the sense of roses that comes to mind. Light bodied on the palate, but the fruit is intense and penetrating and it comes in lighter red nuances with spices and just a mark of caramel. Fantastic wine, one of the few Rioja growers I seek out.

Lovely lifted aromas; floral and spicy with ripe cherry fruit. Nice density of flavour and a long finish yet still fresh and lively. Full of sour cherry fruit, smoky tobacco and a spicy oak character at the back of the palate. Very nice.

Followed this over a couple of days and just realized its almost 4 years ago I opened a bottle of this last. The one descriptor that comes to mind from my last note is 'rose petal'. Definitely a lot of rustic, dusty fruit here and...rose petals. There is no detectable oak here and the wine is subtle and refined. I'm very happy with this now.

Very interesting. Mature red fruit, minerals, bit of black pepper. Light to medium body with very focused flavor. Reminiscent of very good Burgundy. At or near peak.

Medium red. Aromas of strawberry and sweet oak on the nose. I didn't detect any oak last time I drank this wine. With more air, the vanilla/oak disappears and the warm strawberry compote flavor become more pronounced. There is a bit of rose petal too. It's a medium bodied wine with some tannic support, in many ways this could reminds me of a Burgundy. Unique wine. I like it a lot.

This is a beautiful bottle of wine. Talk about an understated expression of Rioja. Fairly light red color (yes, this could be a Burgundy). I get roses on both the nose and palate. This reminded me of the 1999 Mascarello Monprivato in a certain way. Roses, and red garden fruit (strawberry) and tiny whiff of white pepper. So light on its feet this wine, silky, seamless texture. I wonder why I don't own more of this gorgeous wine. Hats off to Lopez de Heredia for not caving in to the disturbing trends going on in Rioja or in Spain for that matter. Beau vin!

I quite liked this. Not as full-bodied or spicy as I envisioned but with a bit of fatty ribeye it was quite round and smooth on the pallete. Decanted and drank at 58-60F over a couple of hours. Started off a bit tight but then mellowed out nicely, showing its age quite well. At $30 this is the upper-end of my "normal" bottles but one I would certainly come back to.

Limpid, clear light ruby color. Wafting high tones eventually taking on a spearmint oil quality. For the longest time, this was lean and sinewy, with strong acids, soil notes, and drying tannins. After it was open for over 3 hours, faint cherry fruit emerged and it seemed less skeletal. Structured like a Nebbiolo from a not particularly ripe vintage, this was interesting at times and a reasonable beverage with lamb chops, but it never quite inched into the realm of pleasurability for me.

Lopez de Heredia / Buil & Gine (K&L Wine Merchants (Hollywood, CA)): Stubbornly reticent, but showing some high tones and minerality. Here the acid is more integrated into the fruit yet simultaneously has greater persistence. Cheesy finish. Can't really tell what's going on here right now.

This is a medium bodied wine with good acidity, and it begs for food. The fruit flavors and alcohol are a bit more evident in this wine, as opposed to the Tondonia, their more traditional bottling, which has great fragrance from the oak. All in all, everything balanced well in the Bosconia, with the smooth vanilla spiciness of the oak, the rich bright cherry flavors, and the refreshing acidity coming together seamlessly. One of the reasons I was so impressed with this rioja is how clean, unobtrusive, yet flavorful the wine is. http://67wine.blogspot.com/2008/03/seamless-rioja.html for full review

Finally a Rioja that isn't redolent of oak. Gorgeous uplifting acidity to this wine. Cherry, spice and a subtle earthiness combine for a heck of a glass of wine. Steal of the century for $30.

Quite nice, took over an hour to start opening, should have decanted. Camphor, dried red fruit, hints of baking spices, iron, blood. Light in the mouth with good concentration and a good finish. Quite young still, the 96 is certainly showing much better right now but this has a bright future. This should turn into a 91-92 pt wine. This note is coming from someone with a lot of Heredia tasting experience FWIW.

P U! This wine sucked! For every great bottle of wine there's a least 100 bad ones. This is one of them. No signs of it being corked either. Colour was very pale and translucent. Smelt like cough syrup and tasted like unsweetened Kool-aid. What a disappointment, especially for $35 bucks. This one and the other I bought are going back to the liquor store. Next time I'll heed the vintage charts and avoid '99 Riojas.

Nose of violets, and berries. Tastes of raspberry and light cherries. This is a medium body nicely balanced wine. It has enough acidity to hold up nicely to foods. The finish is medium long.
