Has aged elegantly. More subtle and layered than its younger form. Purple in the glass, immediate fragrance. Silky entry, soft dark fruit in the middle, and pepper on the end. We agreed that we may have caught the wine at its peak.

Excellent bottle of modern take on Rioja that has certainly aged well. Dark fruit and a bit of earth. Medium to full bodied. The only drawback to this wine is that, blind, I probably would have guessed it to be a 2000 bdx. Which is certainly high praise, but might not be exactly what you have in mind when you pull the cork on a Rioja.

Bottles purchased 8 years ago at auction, in my cellar since. Impulse pull from the cellar, looking to brighten up hamburgers and roasted potatoes...:) PnP, cork came out clean.
Dark, saturated ruby color. Classic Rioja nose of dark cherry, leather and cigar box. Palate showing deep red and blue fruits, licorice, tobacco, cedar. Sappy, mouth coating texture, red fruits/cherry persists through the mid palate. Medium/full body, long finish.
This has aged beautifully, what you want from Rioja. Some might say more modern style, but the wine does not surrender any complexity as a result of bigger fruit. In a great spot now and based on this bottle, has a way to go. I only paid ~$40 for this... good example of how Rioja represents great value for age worthy wines

Deep crimson. Powerful nose of leather, tobacco , dark fruits, cherries. Clean on the palate with good acidity, fruit and tobacco. Firm tannins with quite a long finish. What is not to like! Bought this bottle to try back in the day, finally got round to it. Nothing lost!

A wine lesson from Fernando Remirez for under 100.00 and it came with a bottle of wine!
This bottle was a classy, classic Rioja! Its what you would imagine Zorro would have served you with dinner inside his cave. Its elegant, light footed, complex, and relentelss. The bouquet is all about roasted meat and glove leather. The palate is a potpouri of red fruits, spices, the same glove leather, and graphite. The finish is the most amazing aspect of the wine with a rubberband grip that gets tighter and builds tension with grip, and then gentley eases off back into place. This is youthful and not even close to maturity...far better than last bottle, but not the best QPR out there. Drink but I would rather HOLD this.

Black with a deep ruby rim. Hard to come to terms with at this point in its development. It opened as somewhat hard, charred, and over dry. It took a couple of hours of air to come around, but then showed lots of black cherry, with complex spice and floral notes. I expect it needs a few more years to resolve into maturity, but there's plenty going on below the surface.

Tough and dark, showing some stink, raw wood, raspberry, herbs, cigar, spice. Not really very expressive nose. The palate was all hard edges, smoky, cocoa powder, little fruit, drying woody finish. Clumsy and out of sync right now and I'm not too hopeful about this becoming a lot better with time. I guess I'll save the other bottle for 5 more years.

Tasted blind. This wine really threw me for a loop. The fruit in this was by far the freshest of any wine on the night. It had scents of cherry, earth and raspberry. On the palate I got more cherry and raspberry, blackberry, and a touch of plum. I guessed a Malbec but I wasn’t even close. I gave this 92 points and the wine came in 4th.

Too much power without any finesse when first opened. Was not enjoyable, so re-corked and into the fridge for 24 hours. Patience was rewarded nicely. Smells of red and black fruits with some slight floral tones. Medium/heavy on the palate with taste leaning more towards red fruits with some tobacco in the background. Alcohol was well integrated and the tannins, though firm, were not off putting.

After the first vanilla notes faded, the wine became more and more bordeaux (but a top-notch one) like especially on the palate. With time black currant and cherries intermingled with coffee and cedar. This wine is close to beiing outstanding, another couple years and it will be there. The tannins and acidity are starting to get balanced, but it has enough potential for a long live.

Decanted 1 hr. Deepest purple. Not translucent. Medium tears. Scents of dark cherry and forest floor. Black fruit, spice, tobacco, and a truly long finish with nicely integrating tannins. Modern style for a rioja, on the edge of too much, but not beyond. I'm interested in its evolution.

Tar, rose petal, black fruits, dark chocolate powder on the nose. The color is ruby on the rim with subtle orangish hues. The tastes are of sour cherries, tangy blackberries, coffee, hoisin, dark chocolate, tobacco, and olives. The tannins are still very prominent combined with nice acidity and maybe I should have waited a little longer for this bottle. I really wish I had this with a juicy steak or fatty lamb at the moment; that would have been perfect! Still one of my favorites wines with respect to sheer complexity!

Needs decanting. I was disappointed at first but it really shows it's stuff after a couple of hours. Penetrating, endless complexity, surprisingly long finish; the finish actually seems to amplify; it's stronger after ten seconds than it is after five, if that makes sense; bizzare, in an amazing way. Not for everyone maybe, but for some, something quite special.

From the list at Ten-01; no formal notes. A very pleasing, integrated wine, drinking beautifully today. Seductive on the nose, showing some earthy aromas, tobacco, graphite, though it's all quite velvety. Very soft and elegant on the palate; no extract here, just soft grace. Very good.

Saturdays at One - Volume 36 - Double Blind!: Tasted double blind. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of aspirin, fertilizer and maybe some plum. Flavors of berries and cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannins, light to medium body. Drink now. This bottle seems off to me, not performing well. Therefore no rating.
My guesses were (even though off) Grenache, France, Rhone, 2005, Chateau La Nerthe.

Quite simply one of my favorite all time wines. This wine is garnet towards the meniscus and is almost entirely opaque in the robe. The tannins are satiny and evident but not overpowering and this wine has some nice acidity. There are upfront cedary tastes, olives, blackberry and cherry fruits, with some notes of tobacco. The aromas are mostly woody and remind me of tart dark fruit. I have had a few bottles of this wine they are usually pretty awesome.

MRichman nailed it, I think. PnP that continued to add weight and complexity over the following 90 minutes. Quite focused, but the best is yet to come. If I had some in the cellar, I would decant an hour or two now, or hold for 2-3 more years and drink for the 5-7 after that. Recommended.

Pretty good stuff and still quite dark. Not decanted. Personally less and less sure how I feel about many Spanish wines and this was in that camp. I give it a low 90's score but something in the flavors does not especially move me. Hard for me to say exactly what is missing or whether the wine is simply still too young and the flavors not as resolved as I would like. Fine wine but did not move me.

Rich, dense with a bit of sweetness and a bit of flowers. Lots of tobacco, earth, tight sweet tannins. This is a full bodied wine but doesn't go over the top and stays within its structure. Pretty. It's still a bit young, barely entering it's drinking window, but very enjoyable. Good complexity. I think this will blossom in a few more years. B+
Blind Night (HB Home Bistro, Chicago IL): nose: very pretty and elegant nose of red fruits, dark red berries and dark red cherries along with tones of herbs and bits of spices. Very well balanced with a perfumed quality to it that is more on the feminine side
taste: elegant and beautiful medium feel with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins with great tones of red fruits, dark red berries, spice tones and a good bit of herbs as well. Showing off some youth on the palate, but also showing a real pretty side as well
overall: A very pretty wine that is in need of time. It was hard to put down where this was from other than it being old world. Well balanced with a feminine quality to it on both the nose and palate that is very attractive

Dark maroon color, rich nose of potting soil, barnyard, dark plum, and an interesting nutty venison aroma. Palate is smooth with good concentration, leather and rawhide, bitter cocoa bean, and savory game with lots of youthful acidity. Medium-lenth finish. Enjoyable wine but not quite the blockbuster that some reviews had suggested.

Enjoyed this at Picantes in Ladera Ranch CA. It was opened about 35 minutes before it was served. It was great bottle of wine. It went well with an appetiser of civeche, scallops and shrimp. It was not the perfect match for the monkfish I had but the currant, berry, and smokey aroma kinda worked for me. It was a very dark purple and grabbed ther stemware well. I would order it again. It was a little steep at 2.5 times the community price, but my guests really enjoyed it.

Fairly tight and closed. Some nice purple fruit with a hint of sweetness and some bitterness. Lots of thick tannins, and a long finish with oaky sweet tannins and baking spices. Floral, beautiful notes behind. Quite solid, but in a very hard shell. Don't drink any more for several years.
Day 2 the wine has opened up a lot, showing more of it's floral nature and a long expansive finish with a light sweet touch as well as a bit of a dark coffee core. This will become a beautiful wine.

Decanted for 2+ hours. The nose remained extremely tight. Palate was overwhelmed by acids with a dusty tannic finish. Completely out of balance and showing relatively no fruit. Poured the remainder back in the bottle and recorked. Day 2...much better. Nose of ripe fruits, earth, spice and some chocolate. Palate had a nice core of dark and red fruits but was still somewhat overwhelmed by the acidity and tannins. This seems to have potential but just needs time to settle down.

Tasted January 10, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose with some notes of black berries, maybe some Kirsch. Not sure what else??? Flavors of black berries, Bing cherries and a slightly earthy finish. Medium acidity, firm tannins and medium to full bodied. Drink now with short decant. Should hold for quite a few years.

Wonderful full, sweet, round fruit. Lush, yet restrained. Lots of medium dark notes of tobacco, leather, walnut. Fine, dark tannins that are not yet resolved. Really nice sweet core that will hopefully take over as it matures. Has plenty of stuffing with the fruit, not a fruit bomb. Really nice. Needs some more time to mature. B+/A-

Friday Dinner at Our Place: Deep ruby color. Intense nose of deep blackberry fruit, asian spice, coffee notes and hints of vanilla and toasty oak. Very full and elegant on the nose. On the palate the acid balance is really wonderful, medium bodied but very full flavored on the palate with a long finish. The residual tannins say that this probably needs another few years to show at its best, but it's wonderful now. Complex and elegant.

Clear dark purple with a medium intensity but obvious spicy nose that really 'bites'. Pepper and black cherry flavors, super concentrated with good tannins that give way to a long, smooth finish. Would seem to have fine aging potential but on the second day, the tastes were significantly muted. I've always thought this a warning sign w.r.t aging, I like to see it hold up for at least 24 hours, but hey, aging chemistry is a mystery, so could age well as people are suggesting. Rates as a great wine that'll make you raise your eyebrow and say 'wow'. Appearence (5/5), Nose (12/15), Taste and Finish (18/20), Potential (9/10).

So far this wine has only been released in the states. 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 80% French oak, 20% American Oak. Very clear in color it is a deep burgundy color. The nose shows raspberry, light vanilla oak, light barnyard, anise, cinnamon, and mint. Ever evolving with a bit more air I started to smell milk chocolate, deep cherry, currant, and some herbal undergrowth. In the mouth the tannins are fine and firm with a medium to high acidity. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, mint, chocolate, rosemary, all of which linger on the palate for an incredibly long time. I really would like to taste this again in about 4-5 years and even then I think it would be imporving. Truely a great wine. 4.5/5

Very deep inky purple – deep garnet at the rim; somewhat muted nose that hints to pepper, juicy plum, vanilla and provincial herbs. At this point, I would almost bet a buck on a southern Rhone. Oh so wrong….Tobacco and serious cassis fruit on the palate. Stunning length and concentration. Solid tannins that are completely masked by the pure fruit palate. This is going to be kicking in 2012+. Really good stuff (18+). An intriguing mix Rhone on the nose, Bordeaux in the mouth – boy, do they have something going on !!!!!

Decanted this one for three hours before drinking. Deep reddish purple center with a ruby rim. On the nose this showed somewhat reticent at first. Odors of black fruits (blackberries, plums), oak, coffee and tar, as well as hints of violet. The smell was alluring but a bit shy. On the palate this showed itself as medium weight, with a good acidic balance to the strong fruits, dry tannins and a nice sweet finish. Overall feeling: this is a nice wine which should get better with some additional bottle age.

Very good.

Fine wine but did not move me.

taste: elegant and beautiful medium feel with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins with great tones of red fruits, dark red berries, spice tones and a good bit of herbs as well. Showing off some youth on the palate, but also showing a real pretty side as well
overall: A very pretty wine that is in need of time. It was hard to put down where this was from other than it being old world. Well balanced with a feminine quality to it on both the nose and palate that is very attractive

Day 2 the wine has opened up a lot, showing more of it's floral nature and a long expansive finish with a light sweet touch as well as a bit of a dark coffee core. This will become a beautiful wine.
